If you were TW or GM how would you use our 1st pick

For our 1st pick, i'd have Dowler with pick 8 only because the 'go home' factor with Kennedy and Clark is to strong IMO, and Drum sounds more of a utility key-position player eg Chubba Kellaway. I wouldn't mind if we drafted Drum though as he seems to have huge wraps from some clubs

First of all - don't trade it away! 

Pat Ryder from East Freo would also be in the mix although he's a ruck/forward so we may prefer one of the others if he's still around at 8 given we picked up Patto last year.

Those group of talls - Clark, Hughes, Kennedy, Ryder and Dowler could finish up in any order in the top 10. Hughes will be 19 in January so may not have as much development left compared to say a Clark, Dowler or Ryder who are around about a year younger. That's probably Hughes is at pick 11 in the footydraft.com list. I went for Kennedy but would be happy with any of them. Dowler would be the safest choice as he's a Victorian. At 84kg he may take a while to develop though but he's only 17 (turns 18 in December).

There were queries about his height, but apparently he is now a legit 195cm, which is pretty dam good considering his not 18 until December.

His victorian (city boy aswell, not country) so there's no go home or country boy losing his head in the big city factors to worry about.

Is a great contested mark, and has put the runs on the board in the TAC cup over the past two years.

I would take him over Ryder, Kennedy, Clark and Hughes.

While all the other talls have chinks in their armour, Dowler really doesn't, sure his on the skinny side but so are most 17yo juniors.

if we trade it away for fev, it wont bother me, realistically, what are the chances of pick 8 being a stronger , more powerful and nicer kick than fev. i know ppl like to bag fev, he is the blues version of our richo, but seriously the guy shows presence and is one of the best kicks for goal in the afl. the chance of pick 8 this yr becoming that good are very slim, im starting to really warm up to fev in our team, i hate the blues with a passion and how gr8 would it be if we one a premiership with an ex blue dominating!!!!

I don't have a problem with us chasing Fevola and I have a laugh at imagining Fev slotting a long 55-60m goal to silence jeering Blues supporters. But to give up pick 8 and the chance to get a top kid who'll play 10 years plus for the Tigers and one who is a KPP is just plain stupid. Sure pick up a good player from another club when possible and when he comes cheaply but every premiership team have in the main developed their own players from the draft. There are no short cuts to a flag. This draft is very even not necessarily crap. If we have done our homework then we can score some good kids with every pick we have.

AS far as negitives go from a mate which has watched the kid this season:

 - I hear Dowler not so much soft but doesnt really have the fire in the belly
 - whilst a good forward might not be able to make it as a backman. Has looked out of palce there

Background: Has been talked up as a top 10 draft prospect virtually all season. Has come through the Vic Metro U16 program, and been a member of the AIS Academy. Is also one of the few players to have represented Vic Metro U18 twice. This year, in the first championships match against Western Australia he kicked four goals, all the result of strong contested marks, but the remainder of his week was interrupted after a heavily collision in the match at Geelong midweek that forced him to hospital. Amazingly played the final match, but did not look fit. He played 15 matches for the Chargers and was in the goalkickers in every match except the last of this season.

Strengths:
- marking, he can take as good a mark overhead as anyone
- classy finisher in front of goal
- good endurance, agility and speed off the mark is also quite good


Weaknesses:
- Has looked uncomfortable when playing in defence
- Second half of the season wasn’t great (avg 18.8 PPG pre-championships, averaged 12.5 possies after championships).
- Could improve second efforts

Footydraft.com Verdict: Has probably dropped down the order slightly since the championships, but would still be expected to be taken with a top 10 selection as forwards who can mark are high on the list of AFL

You would think midfielders Murphy, Ellis and Hurn will go before pick 8. So that leaves 5. There are 5 KPPs expected to go top 10 - Ryder, Kennedy, Clark, Dowler and Hughes so one of them will be around at pick 8.

 Sure pick up a good player from another club when possible and when he comes cheaply but every premiership team have in the main developed their own players from the draft. MT - Lynch was a pretty handy 10 year pick up for the Lions, he along with Pike was pretty handy in the finals. Barry Hall's another who springs to mind and Gehrig and Hamill (I know the Saints haven't won a flag but...). It's not that I'm that keen on Fev, but proven FF's aren't thick on the ground and time is definitely on his side. You need a balance of experience and youth...and we're getting a bit short on the experience side (well experience you'd want anyway )
