New club firms in race for Tigers ruckman

A tall Tiger appears almost certain to be relocating north next season, with the close proximity of his family expected to rule fellow suitor St Kilda out of the race.

Gold Coast has emerged as the frontrunner for Richmond ruckman Mabior Chol, who is likely to settle on his second AFL club by the end of the week.

The Herald Sun can reveal the Suns have offered the 24-year-old a three-year contract with a trigger for a fourth season.

The Tigers cannot match that security and are about to ramp up their efforts to retain Callum Coleman-Jones with the expectation that Chol will walk as an unrestricted free agent.

It is unlikely the Tigers would offer Chol a contract longer than two seasons, given he has managed 31 games in six seasons.

They also have 2019 premiership ruckman Ivan Soldo on track to return next season.

At the Suns, Chol would team up with budding superstar Ben King as key forwards who can also relieve Jarrod Witts in the ruck.

They desperately need more ruck support after Stewart Dew was forced to coach without one as Witts, Zac Smith and Matt Conroy went down early.

The project player from South Sudan represented Queensland in juniors after his family relocated to Brisbane in 2005.

Chol’s family now lives in Shailer Park, which is halfway between Gold Coast and Brisbane.

The Herald Sun has confirmed that Essendon is not in the market for Chol, despite reports suggesting he would land at Tullamarine.

Chol’s Wikipedia page wrongly states that he is already a Bomber.

But the Suns are not quite across the line to secure the 198cm player who possesses a big leap.

St Kilda has also hotly pursued Chol as it plans for life after Paddy Ryder, who is likely to retire next season.

Chol’s choice is likely to be revealed next week and his exit from Punt Rd would not require the Tigers to broker a trade.

The Saints and Suns are still jostling for his services and have not been told to expect his signature.

Chol played in 10 out of the final 11 games for the Tigers, kicking four goals against Brisbane Lions in Round 18.

He spent 82 per cent of gametime in the ruck and just 18 per cent forward.

198? He is clearly 200cm.

Happy for him to go if it means more money to offer CCJ.

Richmond could also lose Mabior Chol, but the unrestricted free agent is yet to tell rival clubs of his decision.

The Gold Coast offer for Chol will most likely end up being a four-year contract.

4 years wow.

And 4-5 for CCJ too.

Ridiculous lengths for these two.

Mabior Chol grew up in Queensland and likes the security of Gold Coast’s four-year offer. Would play next to Ben King and support Jarrod Witts. St Kilda also in race but Essendon ain’t interested. Tigers might fatten up their two-year offer to CJ now

Not done yet. But at 24 Chol would be a coup worth celebrating for the Suns, who have had a conga line of players leave and few come the other way. Family in Acacia Park, 80km from Metricon. Played 10 of final 11 games at Richmond and his long leap is fun to watch at training.

4 years wow! I would have only offered a single year extension, at most 2 so can’t blame either RFC or chol for this one.

Good luck to him.

Exclusive: Richmond young gun to join Suns after rejecting rival club

Richmond’s Mabior Chol will play for Gold Coast next year.

Foxfooty.com.au understands the free agent has agreed to join the Suns and will notify the Tigers as early as this week.

Chol was weighing up a proposal from St Kilda but has ultimately decided he wants to join the Suns on a three-year deal with triggers for a fourth season.

It’s unclear how his salary will stack up for Richmond, which will be hoping for at least a third round selection as compensation.

The free agency period begins the Friday after the Grand Final and Chol will officially join the Suns then.

The 24-year-old has played 31 games and one final since debuting at Punt Road in 2016. Richmond sources had sensed for some time he would exercise his rights as a free agent.

Chol’s decision is a win for the Suns following a wide-ranging search for a key forward partner for Ben King.

They had offered five years to Callum Coleman-Jones, who has preferred North Melbourne.

Chol’s family lives in Acacia Ridge - roughly 70km from Metricon Stadium.

All the media running with this now.

Out of contract Tigers teammate Mabior Chol, who is an unrestricted free agent, is likely to accept an offer from Gold Coast.

The four-year contract offer is likely to earn the Tigers a third-round compensation pick. Potentially the pick could be as early as the second round, but that is doubtful and will hinge on the final amount of the contract.
