In the mix: round seven

RICHMOND

Defenders Nick Vlastuin (knee) and Dylan Grimes (hamstring) are pushing to return from injury and add desperately needed reinforcements to an undermanned backline. Both trained on Tuesday and the club expects Vlastuin to face Hawthorn on Friday night. Grimes has missed four matches and appears less certain. He resumed kicking last week and trained with the main group on Tuesday.

It will be intriguing to see what approach the match committee takes and if more young players are given a chance. Young forward Jayden Short moved into defence in the VFL and won 26 possessions, while Kamdyn McIntosh is available after being a late omission last week.

Jacob Townsend is a ready-made inside midfield replacement for injured captain Trent Cotchin.

The Tigers would be considered unlikely to blood draftee Oleg Margov, who was an emergency last week, against the reigning premiers.

Did he play in the VFL last week? Wasn't in McRae's summary....

I saw him the week before and he looked miles away from AFL footy. Guys like Short, Lennon, Marcon (rookie I know) Chol, Butler, and even Broad are surely in front of him.

I think he was kept out of the team as an emergency for the seniors.

It wasn't a development year 6 weeks ago
They were aiming top 4

Yes they were

But what the last 6 weeks has shown is

- that we have very little depth.
- we rely too heavily on the same players week after week = our best 6-7
- we cannot afford to have said best players all horrilby out of form at the same time or injured
- the coach continues to play favourites
- we are no where near a top 4 side. To think any differently is simply stupid
- the season is shot so common sense is we start giving kids a go and just play them.
- but we are now hamstung a bit in that the blokes we need to get rid of who have trade value we need to continue playing so their value (and I use that term very loosely) remains steady

Still true
