Who is No. 1
« on: December 14, 2005, 09:21:33 AM »
IMO, Deledio is the pick of the crop from the Number 1 selections in the past 5 drafts. He isn't as established as Hodge or Riewoldt but IMO he has way more natural talent and is the complete package (in terms of athletic ability, height, versatility and talant). Based on natural talent and abilities I would rank them 1. Deledio 2. Riewoldt 3. Cooney 4. Hodge 5. Goddard 6. Murphy.

Deledio, because were all biased!  :lol

You have to wait until Murphy has played AT LEAST 3 years of AFL before being able to do this roll realistically, and probably a lot longer down the track to get more accurate results!

Murphy hasn't played a game yet so despite his junior days good or bad it's impossible to judge him except to say he's nowhere as naturally talented as a Lids, Cooney or Riewoldt.

In terms of walking straight into the AFL in their first year then it's Lids hands down and that's not being biased lol. The order would be, 1. Lids, 2. Riewoldt , 3. Cooney, ..daylight ... 4. Goddard, 5. Hodge.

In terms of the footy career to date, the likes of Riewoldt and Hodge are more experienced and have had more time at the elite level than Lids. That barring injury will change over time with Lids hopefully bypassing them all but right now Lids still has to take the next step to the elite level. He was unbelievable by first year player standards but you can't fairly compare someone who averaged 15 possies a game to say a Hodge who lead most categories in the comp this year from clearances to disposals. I'll get my head chopped off for being disloyal but at the end of 2005 my ordering would be 1. Hodge, 2. Riewoldt (slipped this year. Didn't stand up in the finals like in 2004), 3. Cooney, 4. Lids, ....daylight .. 5. Goddard.

The first 4 I would have at Tigerland any day but I wouldn't trade Lids for anything. He barring serious injury will be something very special  :thumbsup. Not there yet though.

It's funny how differently people can view things.... ;D

Personally I think Reiwoldt is over-rated in the sense that for the position he plays (CHF) he doesn't get enough contested ball and certianly doesn't take enough contested marks. IIRC in 2004 his total marks was the most in the league but his contested mark % against total marks was like 10-15%. Compare that to say Richo who's up around the 30% mark. Also alot of possession don't hurt you because he's taking uncontested marks on the wing.

Goddard is another I don't rate - have seen him on too many occassions "duck" his head and pull out of contests when he's about to be hit. His skills are not that great either especially under pressure. I just don't think he's improved that much since he started

Cooney I think will be very good. Started slowly in 2004 but by the end of it was living up to expectations. Still shows signs he can improve

But the best of the above lot (outside Lids)  IMHO is Hodge more because of his unquestionalbe leadership qualities (forget the 21st b-day thing) he looks like a leader on the field.

Lids - well I agree will be special because from day one he has shown he can handle the pressure, expectation and everything else - shows a bit of leadership too. But there is certainly room for a lot improvement

I'd take Hodge and Cooney because there strengths are run and carry so they'd fit the Wallace game plan. Goddard - never ever and mean never. As for Reiwoldt .... when hell freezes over

My bad. The four I was talking about were from the ones I had listed  - Lids, Hodge, Riewoldt and Cooney; not from the list at the top of the thread. Goddard is a dud - pure and simple  ;).

Reiwoldt had a poohouse 1st season!

Cooney, Deledio and Murphy can not fairly be judged as of yet!

Hodge is a gun.

Reiwoldt is a gun when everything goes his way eg: great midfield delivery, playing in a forward line with heaps of forwards options, not getting physically intimidated.

When things don't go his way he can be VERY average!

Goodard just believes his own hype, the only thing his good for his beating people in sprints!

Reiwoldt had a poohhouse 1st season!!

KPP take (alot) longer. You cannot expect a 193cm 17/18 year old to tear the league apart. Much easier for a midfeilder to have a good first year.

From what I remember Reiwoldt's first yeah or two he had injuries but when he did play he play as a tall defender and did very well.

It's funny how differently people can view things.... ;D

Leagues most valuable player last season according to the players in the league = not overrated.

I'd love all 6 at Richmond.

Riewoldt & Hodge are in the league elite. Cooney a season or two away.

Goddard I reckon will come good.

If you wouldnt want Riewoldt at Punt Road you are a fool.

I'd have Reiwoldt at Punt Road in a second, then i'd trade him straight away!  ;)

His just way too soft for my liking, i mean for Geez sake Ty bloody Zantuck took him out of a game in 2004 simply by roughing him up a bit!

Matter of opinion :) ;)

;D just a fool with an opinion  :cheers

Let me put it this way - I like contested footy especially contested marks - perhaps that's why I enjoy Richo so much - Reiwoldt compared to others doesn't take enough contested marks for a CHF. I've seen teams allow Reiwoldt easy possessions on the wing because he doesn't hurt you there. I know all the commentators love him especially one Robert Walls but I just don't think he hurts the opposition as much as he could or should. Give me Jonathon Brown any day.

Can I just add that there are certain players that I like to just sit down and watch play the game. Richo, J. Brown, etc. Out of the list above I'd go to watch lids, I'd sit down to watch Hodge and Cooney. For me I just wouldn't do that for Reiwoldt he just isn't that sort of player to this footy lover

The opinion of 500 odd AFL players who, with respect, opinion matters and has alot more weight to it all than yours.

Id I could have any player in the league at Richmond it'd be Jono Brown. That said Riewoldt isn't that type of monster CHF. He is the new age, mobile, almost half forward flank KPP. Whilst he isnt in the Kosi/Richo/Hall molde Roo is by no means soft. That mark he took running a million mile back into the flight was one of the most couragous things ive ever seen on a footy feild. I remember the game he kicked 10 odd goals playing out of the square as a full forward against the Dee's. I'd take that at Richmond any day of the week.

If you dont like the non-contested mark, mobile KPP, hard running type your going to hate Wallace's Richmond over the next 3/4 years under the Hughes/Limbach KPP, 15 ruckrovers system.

Well done Captain blood :cheers

As MT and WP know I don't post much lately.....but

I was reading this topic and felt compelled to post all the things you just mentioned.

How can anyone say Reiwoldting is soft? That mark against Sydney was amazingly brave. I mean he's not exactly J.Brown is he?

He had a crap season last year and yet is still highly rated by his peers and with respect they are the ones who should know.

Yes I prefer Richo in my side any day, but if some of our young KPP's can become close to as good as this guy we will be a future finals force.

Imagine if the Lions had got him under zoning rules? They might have won 5 in a row...........

Just leave him alone.........................you....................................all of you...........................

I actually love the run and carry game plan but you still need blokes to take contested marks in pack situations when the carriers bomb it long to the square.

 ;D ;D ;D 8)  :help :santa 8)

:'( :'( I never said he was soft. I just don't hink he hurts the oppositions as much as what he could.

Now that i've said that of course I can see it now - round 2 2006 - he'll take 10 contested marks + mark of the year and I'll be in hiding :lol

H Tiger that was simply blind courage, anyone can run in and close their eyes and hope for the best, im talking about general toughness and willingness to fight in contested situations.

The second Reiwoldt has an opponent that can run with him and put on some basic physical pressure on him, he goes to water.

I remember this season, some WC kid who i have never heard of before was on Reiwoldt, and all he did was run with him and make a hard contest, Reiwoldt's arms were flapping around in just about every marking situations, he never looked like marking the ball!

Like i said above, on a day where everything goes his way, he'll destroy you but in 2005 more teams figured out Reiwoldt's weakness thats why the severe drop in form, not simply because of injuries!
