Tigers put on a show in Match Simulation

By Anna Pavlou

25 July 2025

Richmond has come out victorious in their official Match Simulation against Carlton on Friday night, nabbing a 10-point victory at IKON Park.

It was a tight start to the IKON Park match, with Carlton piling on the first two goals, before Richmond's midfielders, led by strong in and under work by Mon Conti, took control in their forward 50.

Confidence down back from Jodie Hicks set the tone early, while Bec Miller also took key intercept marks early in the first term.

Shelby Knoll announced herself in the yellow and black, kicking Richmond's first goal of the night, and her first for the Club.

Soon after, key forward Caitlin Greiser got in on the party, set up after crafty work from Knoll, to kick the side's second goal and reduce the deficit.

Katelyn Cox also successfully completed her managed minutes on return from her ACL injury, working across half back and laying multiple important tackles in the second term.

Skipper Katie Brennan put Richmond in the lead early in the second, with a strong set shot handing the side a four-point buffer.

The Blues came out firing early and kicked the first of the third quarter, until a restructure for Richmond settled the away side.

Draftee Sierra Grieves completed some promising minutes, laying an important tackle and utilising her speed down the IKON Park wings.

Amelia Yassir steady the ship for the Tigers again, with her first major of the night, allowing the side to claw back their lead, before a late Blues goal gave the home team a two-point buffer at the final break.

The rain impacted play in the final quarter, but Ellie McKenzie swung in from the middle to take a crucial mark directly in front, which resulted in a goal that gave Richmond the lead.

Richmond put on the jets halfway through the fourth, with midfielder Issy Bacon finding space forward, before Maddie Shevlin finished off with a snap goal to stretch the lead to 11 points.

Libby Graham was prominent deep in defence, taking a much-needed intercept deep in Blues territory to stop a likely goal. It was followed soon after by Gabby Seymour, who patrolled the backline in the second half.

Overall, Richmond managed to fight off the harsh weather conditions and a surging Carlton outfit, to record an important pre-season win, while also allowing multiple players to find their feet on return from long-term injuries.

Captain Brennan led with two goals, while Greiser, Knoll, Shevlin, Yassir and McKenzie all had a goal each.

Lulu Beatty was also confident in her first hit out in the yellow and black, while Grace Egan showed fight in her managed minutes.

The Tigers now look ahead to next week's official Practice Match against Hawthorn, scheduled for Sunday 3 August from 12pm at IKON Park, with the team to be named the day before.

I have commented on the AFLW player’s conditioning and have copped a hiding over it by the woman’s rights brigade, despite making my comments “gently”

There was comments made in the past of whether men get judged the same …

Well - exhibit A

And let’s see if it gets treated with the same level of panic and distress that it would if someone said it to one of the poor darlings playing AFLW

Poor Toby would be headed for the gallows if it was AFLW

Glad you bought it up. You beat me to it.

The AFL have stuffed up big time here IMHO

If the same thing happened in the AFLW and an AFLW player made the same comment that Toby Greene did said player would be suspended. Not a doubt in my mind

So how / why is this different?

The AFL made the call to remove player weights across all comps in the name of consistency.

Certainly no consistency in this situation if there was then Toby would have should have been sanctioned in some form. Personally I thought what he said was pathetic and disgusting but typical Toby

Whether people agree that body shaming warrants some form of punishment is a separate discussion but the AFL'S decision in saying "nothing to see here" only makes a mockery of their supposed stand on body shaming
