‘Pretty clear standout’: The ball magnet who won EVERYTHING as Giant draft coup looms

Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
December 11th, 2025

It was the tough, intimidating footy initiation that set Chloe Bown up for the most ridiculously impressive draft campaign and likely top-three draft selection.

The consensus among sources spoken to by foxfooty.com.au was that Bown was the No.1 open pool prospect, with one source declaring Bown was a “pretty clear standout”.

Clubs view Bown (173cm) as a consistent, reliable on-baller with an incredible work ethic and ability to kick well on both feet. Her ability to break lines and set up scores for her team are also weapons in an already loaded arsenal.

Bown has drawn similar praise from her peers, several telling foxfooty.com.au that they’d select Bown with pick 1.

Bown said she modelled her game on Richmond superstar Monique Conti.

Richmond, which moved up to Pick 1 during the AFLW trade period, will consider taking Bown with the opening selection of next week’s draft.

If the Tigers overlook her – and that’s becoming an increasingly likely prospect – it’s hard to see her sliding past the GWS Giants (Picks 2 and 3) or, at the latest, Adelaide (Pick 4).

Tigers reveal moment they decided to trade for No.1 pick

Richmond will have the first pick in the AFLW draft after making a bold trade move.

By Sarah Black, AFL Media
Dec 11, 2025, 8:47 am

Richmond will base its draft hand around the need to boost its athletic profile after a disappointing slide down the ladder in 2025.

The Tigers underwent an external review after the conclusion of their season, which led to the departures of head of football Kate Sheahan and coach Ryan Ferguson.

List manager Trent Mosbey said there was a targeted approach to land pick one from Gold Coast in order to get access to the top three players in the draft, having originally held pick No.4.

"We worked on it for a month or so, working with Thomas (Waldron) at Gold Coast. He's been awesome and great to deal with, and obviously traded a lot of picks in, and that enabled him to get those deals done, and allowed us an opportunity to get pick one," Mosbey said.

"We saw it as a unique opportunity and the player we have there we rate really highly. We're really excited to bring them in and get it done next Monday.

"We really clearly feel there are three standout players in this draft, and we just really wanted access to them, which is why we did it. We were at (pick) three, before the AFL gave the Giants a compensation pick. So once that came in, we knew we really had to get to work to get up to (pick) one to make sure we were able to secure that talent."

The Tigers have been heavily linked to draft bolter Scarlett Johnson, with Chloe Bown and key forward Olivia Wolmarans the other likely options at the top of the draft board.

"[Johnson] is one of the players we are considering there. She's a really exciting athlete, but there's quite a few exciting talents in this pool as well," Mosbey said.

"[Needing athleticism] was evident throughout the year, that we're a step off in that regard, so we really needed to address that across the field. We think bringing [Georgia Stubs] in, Dana East and now the No.1 pick as well – plus what we can get later in the draft, which we're really excited about that period of the draft -  we think we can bounce back next year.

"One of the key components is getting more athletic and quicker around the ground, so we can challenge and compete with the better teams in the future."

Mosbey did not go into detail about the review and subsequent fall-out, instead paying tribute to his former colleagues.

"To Kate Sheahan and Ryan Ferguson, we're very thankful for their great service to our football club in setting us up for what we are right now, and I'm really thankful for what they've done. They were a massive part of us going up for pick one."

RICHMOND

OUT
Tessa Lavey (retired), Jodie Hicks (retired), Lulu Beatty (delisted), Lauren Brazzale (delisted), Charley Ryan (delisted), Grace Egan (trade, Adelaide), Katelyn Cox (delisted), Shelby Knoll (delisted)

Some much-needed change has taken place at Richmond. Untried Roo Georgia Stubs has landed with the Tigers for very little, making her a free hit for the rebuilding club, and experienced Fremantle midfielder Dana East was the very last player to move before the trade deadline, but the remaining pieces for their 2026 list will have to come via Monday's draft.

Viewed as the ‘safe’ choice for this year’s No.1 pick, Richmond is a big fan of the U18 All-Australian Chloe Bown.

The Vic Metro co-captain is highly skilled on both sides of her body and knows how to win the footy on the inside and out.

Richmond AFLW List and Recruiting Manager, Trent Mosbey, has provided an update on the Tigers’ plans for Monday’s draft.

Holding picks one, 38, 56 and 63, Richmond will bolster its list with a strong influx of young talent on Monday night, with Mosbey excited by the players that the Club are set to acquire.

“We're really excited by this unique opportunity, and it's going to be a great thing for the footy club going forward,” Mosbey told Richmond Media.

“We rated the top three in this draft, that sort of set it apart. Two of them have been really outstanding players from under-16's onwards, so we've got three years of great data there.

“The other one's sort of really bobbed up this year and really improved their game, but also had a great bottom-aged year as well.

“We feel really adequate and very prepared that we've seen these players play for a long time, we've built connections with the players themselves and their families, so we're very confident that we know them as people and players, and look forward to calling one of their names out on Monday.”

Such is the depth of talent in the draft pool, the Tigers’ second selection is a valued one.

“We’ll probably utilise pick 38, we've got a batch of players we feel that'll get through to that point of the draft, and we're excited to add a player there that can really help us in the present and in the future,” Mosbey said.

However, Mosbey explained how the options for using pick 56 remain open.

“Pick 56 gives us some flexibility,” he said.

“The AFL have introduced a pre-season draft, which will come into (effect) before the season starts next year, so we might have some flexibility around passing that pick to go into there with pick three in that draft or sign a rookie or look at some other options post that.

“A lot of flexibility…we'll see what comes through at that point of the draft and make a decision a bit sooner to that pick.”

------------------

The draftees won’t be the only new faces at the Swinburne Centre, with the Tigers adding Dana East (Fremantle) and Georgia Stubs (North Melbourne) in the trade period.

“We've liked Dana for a long time now, and the opportunity came up to acquire her and add to our midfield mix,” Mosbey said.

“We were looking for a really competitive inside mid that has really clean hands and was really good with distributing out to outside runners, and also a really strong tackler, really competitive around the football, can work hard both ways and provide defensive running transition.

“We feel that Dana will complement our other midfielders in there with Ellie McKenzie and Mon Conti, and then also our younger brigade, Sierra Grieves, Emelia Yassir, Isabel Bacon, Charli Wicksteed, so we really wanted to get a player that could complement them.”

While she is yet to make her AFLW debut, Mosbey says Stubs is primed to make an impact when her opportunity arises.

“We liked Georgia in her draft year,” he said.

“Georgia is a running rebound defender and also has recently trained as an inside mid at North Melbourne, so going up against Jasmine Garner, Ash Riddell and those sort of players in there, we feel she's had a great development path already with North Melbourne over two years, and we feel that she's ready to go and impact at AFLW level.”

---------------------------

Another deal Richmond made was sending Grace Egan to Adelaide in exchange for the aforementioned 38th pick.

“The opportunity came up for Grace to go to Adelaide, a great program, a new coach over there as well, and new opportunities to play in their midfield mix,” Mosbey said.

“It worked out for Grace, and we're really excited for her and what she can do over there, on and off the field in Adelaide as a town and as a club.

“We felt that Grace provided a skill set that we needed to enhance and improve on to make our midfield mix a bit more well-rounded, and with a number of younger players coming through, we're really excited to give them more opportunity through the midfield, and we felt that was a part of that as well.

“We do wish Grace the best of luck and thank her for what she did for our footy club, and we'll look on and applaud her from afar.”
