Rioli’s rise no surprise: Grigg

Daniel Rioli’s rapid improvement in his second year at Punt Road has coincided with changes to his body and a bumper pre-season, says Richmond teammate Shaun Grigg.

The 20-year old has played a pivotal role in setting up the club’s 7-4 record at the half-way point of the season, forming part of a manic pressure small forward line, alongside Dan Butler and Jason Castagna.

“One that stands out to me is Dan Rioli – the change in his body over pre-season was massive,” Grigg said on SEN Breakfast.

“He worked really hard and he’s starting to reap the dividends now.”

Following a tough 2016 many were questioning whether the Tigers could rise up the ladder, but Grigg says he knew the young talent that got opportunities to play senior football had the ability to step up.

“I knew our young talent was going to be good. We blooded a lot of blokes at the back end of last year and results obviously didn’t go our way,” he said.

“But it was good to get those games into those games and they took another step over pre-season.

“You saw guys Like Dan Rioli, Dan Butler, Connor Menadue, and Jason Castagna. I definitely saw the talent of the young boys.”

Grigg is great mates with out of contract star Dustin Martin, and while there is the occasional joke about whether he will sign, he said it would be left to CEO Brendon Gale and Martin’s management to decide his future.

“We just let it be. We have a joke around here and there as all footy clubs would, but as Brendon Gale said the other day the club’s comfortable where it’s at,” he said.

“I’ll back the big chief in. He’s a good operator.”
