Tigers premiership pair poised to return for clash with Saints

Daniel Cherny
The Age
June 22, 2021

Richmond are likely to regain triple-premiership pair David Astbury and Dion Prestia for Friday night’s MCG clash against St Kilda as the Tigers seek to keep alive their flagging top-four chances.

However Tiger pillars Toby Nankervis and Tom Lynch have been ruled out of contention for the date with the Saints, despite closing in on returns from their respective knee injuries.

Astbury (Achilles) hasn’t played since the round 10 loss to the Brisbane Lions but the Tigers listed him on Monday as “probable” for this week, as they have with injury-prone midfielder Prestia (hamstring), who is in line to return less than three weeks after being hurt in Richmond’s win against Essendon at Optus Stadium.

The Tigers gave away a hint of their impending selection moves this week when Marlion Pickett and Daniel Rioli played in Richmond’s drawn VFL game against Williamstown on Sunday.

Pickett and Rioli are both senior incumbents, playing in the round 13 loss to West Coast in Perth, but appear likely to be squeezed out of the AFL 22 this week given they played at the lower level over the weekend of Richmond’s senior bye.

Hugo Ralphsmith, who was the Tigers’ unused medical substitute against the Eagles, also played in the thriller against the Seagulls.

Backman Astbury could in-effect take Pickett’s role as backup ruckman behind Mabior Chol, who has been holding down the no.1 role in the absence of the injured Nankervis and Ivan Soldo.

While they have a relatively favourable fixture in the back half of the season, Richmond will begin round 15 two wins and 23 per cent outside the top four. Only one side - the Western Bulldogs in 2016 - has won the premiership from positions 5-8 since the advent of the current finals system.

Lynch is listed as a “short-term” proposition on the Tigers’ website, while Nankervis is out for the “medium-term.”

Team Tips: The premiers keep gaining reinforcements with David Astbury and Dion Prestia likely to return for Friday night. Based on VFL selection, Marlion Pickett, Daniel Rioli and unused medical sub Hugo Ralphsmith are on the fringes of the 23, since the AFL team had a bye on the weekend but all three played against Williamstown. Astbury could back up Mabior Chol in the ruck - which Pickett has been doing.

Astbury or Pickett in the Ruck are a mistake IMHO.

In the Mix: Round 15

RICHMOND

The Tigers are set for a selection crunch, with Dion Prestia (hamstring) and David Astbury (Achilles) ready to return, bar any mishaps. Marlion Pickett played VFL last weekend while the AFL side had a bye, as did Daniel Rioli – the pair both played against the Eagles in round 13. Josh Caddy may also be an option to come out of the side. We're unlikely to see a defender come out due to Liam Baker's versatility allowing room for Astbury to return.

Verdict: Pickett and Rioli out for Prestia and Astbury

Prestia is a lock for Friday night.

Astbury could miss another week.

Samson Ryan is an in

Like it. We have been playing 1 short in the big guy department for a while now. Chol, Ryan are the main rucks and will rotate up forward with CCJ so we will always have two talls down there. Well that is at least how I picture it.

Are we seeing a change in selection philosophy? It feels to me like the 3 amigo small forward era is coming to an end...
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Clearly we're worried about Marshall & Ryder. Both sides going in tall in the wet will be interesting.

From the training pics: Ryan (who we know is playing), RCD, Mansell & Parker took part in the captain's run today of those who didn't play against the Eagles.
