‘Where’s Dimma?’ Hardwick toasts Tigers on his world tour

On the day Damien Hardwick announced his surprise move to finish up as Richmond coach mid-season, so he could smell the roses, players and staff headed to the nearby London Tavern for lunch.

It was the perfect location to pay tribute to their premiership coach as the pub has Stone and Wood Pacific Ale on tap, so they could propose a toast to ‘Dimma’ with his favourite beer and, as Dylan Grimes said, “turn the page on a chapter of the Richmond book”.

Then it was back to work.

For everyone but Hardwick of course, who spent his first unemployed Sunday on the couch holding aloft a Stone and Wood as he settled in to watch the Tigers take on Port Adelaide.

Last Sunday he was a world away in Denver, Colorado but the party was only just starting as he raised a glass to Tiger fans and club CEO Brendon Gale as he settled in at the perfect time of 9.10pm Saturday to watch the Giants play Richmond.

His timing was good with the Denver Nuggets – which features Traralgon’s Jack White on their roster, the same country town current Tigers coach Andrew McQualter hails from – in between NBA play-off games.

After a bit of digging, Snap Shot had a tip suggesting the bar may have been the old Three Lions Bar on Colfax Avenue (now the DNVR sports bar), but that’s not confirmed. Snap Shot is sure it wasn’t the Dew Drop Inn on 17th Avenue in Denver.

Hardwick may have found 40 people pledging to become Tiger members, but these postcards – which brilliantly break the old rule of don’t be photographed with a beer in your hand – can’t go on, surely.

Richmond’s next match is on Saturday night in Perth and starts at 7.25pm Eastern Standard Time, meaning it will be 3.25am in Denver, 2.25am in Los Angeles or 5.25am in New York or Miami.

Now we’re talking.

Of course, if he shot over to Ibiza on his hold your beer high world tour, it would be a much more pleasant 11.25am.

After the one-point Round 10 loss to Essendon, many critics thought Richmond’s season was done. And with that came coach Damien Hardwick’s resignation as long-time assistant Andrew McQualter stepped in as caretaker coach. While a narrow 10-point loss to the high-flying Port Adelaide immediately followed, the Tigers have shown some grit and determination in the back to back wins over GWS and Fremantle in WA. Sure the five-game losing streak earlier in the year hasn’t helped their plight as finals smokies, but Garry Lyon says he’s impressed with the way Richmond has turned it around under McQualter. “Andrew McQualter has looked at it and said back to the future,” he said On the Couch. “He said let’s get rolling again. It’s not to say they weren’t (invested). He walks in ... and says I’m going to swing some magnets back.” Those changes include sending Liam Baker from defence under Hardwick forward, Shai Bolton as a pure midfielder, Jayden Short from midfield to defence and Trent Cotchin from forward to midfield. It’s worth noting, Richmond are now currently just one and a half wins outside the top eight.

Damien Hardwick texted Cotchin during the week reminiscing on their journey together and then sat in the MCG stands sipping beers surrounded by Wayne Campbell, Mick Malthouse and Kevin Bartlett on Saturday night. How sweet it must’ve been for Dimma to sit back and enjoy the Tigers getting their mojo back.

Asked on Triple M Footy what had turned the Tigers season around, as it now sits ninth on the ladder, half a game back to the Western Bulldogs and Adelaide Crows, Riewoldt quipped: “We got rid of Dimma. He was in the crowd tonight, carrying right on, wasn’t he. The crowd was going ballistic when he started doing his little handshake. It’s all about him.

Former Richmond coach Damien Hardwick linked to AFL coaching role

Speaking to Triple M, Browne has reported that Hardwick's chances of landing the Suns job are only likely to increase if the club's form under Stuart Dew fails to see them reach the top eight.

"Murmurings in football are absolutely increasing this week that Damien Hardwick will end up at the Gold Coast," Browne said.

"You can debate me whether that's fair on Stuart Dew all you like, but that's what's being discussed in high-level football circles.

"The Gold Coast were uncompetitive against Carlton last week. They were good in the first 20 minutes and then sort of gave up in the way other Gold Coast sides have done in the past.

"That's what frustrates people because they've got so much talent. So I can't place enough importance on this game against Hawthorn, as far as Stuart Dew is concerned.

"Off the back of COVID, it's fair to say a lot of coaches who like living on the Gold Coast would happily go there, good (coaches).

"It could be an active coaching market at the end of the year. There could be interest in the Suns position if it becomes available, including from Damien Hardwick, but the ball is in Stuart Dew's court and the Suns have to beat Hawthorn."

The Age have reported that Hardwick will open discussions with his manager Paul Connors next month after returning from a trip to Europe. It is understood the pair will discuss what the triple premiership coach's aspirations are for the near future.

The Suns job could become one of the most tantalising in the AFL this year given the club's riches of young stars and potential, coupled with the trio of Academy players that are touted as potential first-round draft prospects.
