‘Do your job’: Tigers veterans berated for ‘letting down’ Yze as ‘angry’ Robbo takes aim

Fox Footy
May 14th, 2024

Richmond’s senior players have been called out for “letting Adem Yze down” during its demoralising defeat to the Western Bulldogs at the weekend.

The Tigers suffered the worst loss by any team this year last Saturday night, going down by 91 points at the MCG in a disenchanting showing.

Despite stunting injuries to key players, the side’s performance has prompted backlash in recent days.

After conceding 22 scoring shots from 43 inside-50s in the first half alone, the Tigers allowed the Bulldogs a 10-goal second half and conceded a staggering 77 inside-50s for the match.

On Fox Footy’s AFL 360, Herald Sun Chief Football Writer Mark Robinson scathed the Tigers who suited up on Saturday night, claiming they didn’t do enough to “support” their first-year head coach.

“It’s a great discussion (about) where do they go now?” Robinson began on Monday night. “Adem Yze’s coming out, new coach, supporting his players (at his post-match press conference).

“A lot of people (thought) ‘no, come on Adem, call it as you see it’. Because watching that game on the weekend, I got really angry with the senior players.

“You’re letting Adem Yze down.

“Forget what you’ve done in the past, you guys. You’re getting paid, do your job, show some spirit. How much does it cost to buy spirit? Just bring it, will you?

“Support this new guy — he needs supporting.”

During his Saturday night presser, Yze told reporters that while his side’s heavy loss was “really disappointing”, he “can’t fault our effort”.

“If it was around effort and intent then (I) would be a little bit worried, but I can never doubt (effort) with our players. I can’t fault that,” Yze said.

“I can see some frustration (from the players) with our execution, I just don’t want that to dint our spirit.”

Robinson said that while there were promising signs shown by Richmond’s contingent of youngsters, they need their senior teammates to lead by example.

“Like, Geez,” Robinson continued. “It’s so frustrating to watch a team of good players — and there’s probably about a dozen in there — and they’ve got young players, and there’s some really good signs with some of their young players, but the young players need leadership and guidance, and they need effort.

“(They need to see) the senior players bust their bum, tackling and running to support. And if that doesn’t happen, it all falls apart.

“They were bouncing, the Dogs, and they just went ‘bang’, and there was little resistance (from Richmond). Little resistance.

“I think Adem Yze has been let down ... he has been let down by his senior players.”

I agree with Slobbo here.

I'm fine with losing but senior players need to have a dip and show some sort of example for the young players.

It will not be good for our rebuild copping hidings like that.

The fire is gone for most of our older blokes. You can see the a lot of them the desperation just isn't there.

This is why it's so important to play kids.

Anything that comes from a bloke who butchers the words and thoughts he is meant to be an expert at expressing doesn’t win me. Can not see how  the 10 senior players can do a lot more when most are past their best, we need a full team to be competitive , not just the senior players,

I don’t watch this bloke, had he had a wash this year .

Robbo makes a great case for why we need to name Nick Vlaustuin Captain!  He never failed to bust his bum & offer the resistance & leadership talked about.   Their 77 I50's should've resulted in 50 odd goals for them & would've, if not for Floss ...    :clapping

I'm a bit the same

No issue with what Robbo said

As I said to few people about the other night. If you are sitting at a game and all you are doing is questioning effort or lack of effort; it's best you walk out. That's why I left at 3qtr time on Saturday. 3rd time in my life I walked out in disgust

And BTW I found myself questioning their effort 10 minutes into the 1st qtr.

'Are you in?': Matthew Lloyd urges Tigers to ask tough question of highly-paid stars

By Anna Pavlou
AAP
16 May 2024

Matthew Lloyd is urging new Richmond coach Adem Yze to confront his veteran players, asking the hard question of where they want to be in 2025.

It comes after the Tigers' horror start under their new leader, with a 1-8 record in 2024 after nine rounds.

Now, Lloyd is eager to see if the club will move on ageing players in the hope of future success.

"I'd be eyeballing, if I was Adem Yze, every player and saying 'are you in for us, or do you want out?'," Lloyd said on Nine's Footy Classified on Wednesday night.

"You can see the ones who want to be in for the long haul and others who go 'you know what, my only reason for playing now is a premiership'."

But there is a perfect balance that the Tigers must achieve, to avoid falling off the cliff like North Melbourne has in recent years after they axed a plethora of ageing stars.

"We look at North Melbourne and what you've got to be careful of is not getting rid of your senior players. You need to keep the right ones," Lloyd said.

The Essendon champion threw up veteran forward Tom Lynch's name as a player they could look to move on, if they feel the money from his mega contract could be used on draftees and young recruits to help their rebuild instead.

Lynch is 31-years-old.

"I just wonder whether freeing up a million dollars from Tom Lynch, or a (rival) club would pay a fair portion of it. It might be a win-win," he said.

As for superstar midfielder Dustin Martin, whose mega nine-year deal comes to an end in 2024, he also may be shown the door in a few months' time.

Despite being lauded by outgoing Richmond CEO Brendon Gale, who will depart at the end of the season to take over as the new leader of the league's 19th franchise, Tasmania, the Tigers may be heading in a direction that doesn't include Martin.

"He's one I'm looking in the eye and saying, 'Dusty, how bad do you want this? Do you want to be playing in a bottom four side next year or not? If you aren't willing for that fight, we'd prefer to move you on'."

Jimmy Bartel believes Richmond should allow Martin to stay on for another season.

"If he wants to stay, 30, 40-plus goalkickers are hard to find," Bartel said.

He even urged the Tigers to stick with premiership key forward Lynch, who could be there if their rebuild turns around quickly and they find themselves competing in September again in just a few years' time.

"That's back to Tom Lynch even. If he's committed and his body's right, you don't want to get down the path (to finals) and go, 'you know what we're looking for? A key forward'," Bartel said.

Well Jimmy, Dusty has never kicked 40 goals in a year. In fact this is only the second year in his entire career that he is averaging less than 1 goal/game. He won't kick 30 this year or next.

And Lynch will be 32 at the end of the year. He simply won't be there in our next tilt. His body is failing him and IMO we'll be lucky to get another 20 games out of him by the end of 2025.

If someone (like Collingwood) wants Lynch we should consider a trade and pay a portion of his salary that enables us to get a decent pick back.

Absolutely would not trade Lynch to Collingwood. Not sure if you enjoy watching the pies win flags, I sure as hell don’t and would not want any part in assisting them in doing so. Then you want to pay part of his salary as well  :help

anyone who is happy to give lynch to the pies is either really stupid, or was too young during the tough times against the filth or scum.

i would not trade anything to either of those dogs and bombers except KMac.

again back to hopper. Happy for the hopper trade now want to give lynch to the pies for what pick 20 for the same reasons we should have kept those picks.

Not sure anyone on this site would agree to that, would they?
