Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said the veteran spearhead could require surgery.

"I think Jack might have fractured his thumb," Hardwick said in his post-match press conference on Thursday night.

"He'll have scans to confirm it that’s why he went off early and probably struggled to hold the ball a little bit tonight. We'll get more details out when we find out possibly tomorrow."

Not a disaster that Jack will be out. We were top heavy anyway and I reckon we need a more mobile player like Cumberland in there. Balta more time forward, and hopefully Vlastuin gets back to bolster the defence soon.

He lacked mobility and wasn’t jumping at the ball at all - maybe he fractured his toe as well  ;D
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

True it should not hide how poor he actually was.

Jon Ralph on Ch 7 said Jack's surgery last night went very well. It wasn't a scaphoid fracture so it's not a 6-8 week injury. Jack will miss the GWS game but could be back for the following week against the Saints.

Glad it’s not  scaphoid , nasty lingering injury, broke mine punching the back of a head with my thumb inside my fingers in the excitement of the moment, then broke it coming back too early for the finals.

The club expects the 33-year-old to miss this Sunday's clash against Greater Western Sydney and potentially the clash against St Kilda at the MCG the following week.

Update from Peter Burge:

Jack Riewoldt, thumb

"It's a short-term recovery. Jack's had a plate put into the base of the thumb, his metacarpal. It's a short-term turnaround, so he won't play this week and then we'll reassess his availability for next week."

Jack on AFL360 tonight said he wanted to play this week but he wasn't allowed to. Likely out for 1-2 weeks. Depends on how it's healed once the gigantic bandage is taken off.

He did the injury in the first 2 minutes of the game trying to spoil. Knew he had done something straight away as his thumb had shifted. The surgery put in a plate and six screws. He's got a two inch cut on his thumb so they needed to be careful about infection.

Edit: Here's a replay of Jack on AFL360: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNYJl5Cllyc

Jack said on AFL360 last night that he has been given the all clear by the medicos. It's now about testing the functionality of his thumb/hand and seeing how he goes at training (which I think is tomorrow).
