Are we sure that Dusty is the game’s highest paid player?
Sounds like a mischievous piece of BS by an asswipe who has form on ragging out the tigers...
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

One-sixth of quite a bit: Alex Rance leaves $1.4 million on the table

Alex Rance agreed to a settlement in which he was paid one-sixth of his estimated $800,000 annual salary, giving up a total close to $1.4 million in their salary cap over this year and 2021.

The settlement - in which Rance was paid only for two months, or one-sixth of his 2020 deal - means that the superstar defender would have to re-negotiate a fresh new deal with the Tigers if he decided to return to play.

The terms of the settlement are a consolation for Richmond should Rance stick with this retirement, since it opens up substantial room in their tight salary cap, allows them to modify contracts to important players, assisting in retaining them and emerging players.

While Richmond would still prefer to see Rance change his mind and and resume playing for the club, the Tigers are less optimistic about this happening than they were a month ago, albeit the door remains ajar.

Rance has been retained on the playing list for this year, meaning he can theoretically return at any time during the upcoming season. But if he chooses to return later, obviously the Tigers would be well placed to pay him at a lower rate than the hefty contract that he walked away from in December.

Rance has not given any indication that he is considering a return, having cited faith (he is a Jehovah's Witness) and family as the drivers of his decision to step away from football, in the face of inevitable speculation about his reasons for quitting. The champion also recently endured a marriage separation.

The fact that Rance stepped away from the game in December - long after the trade period and draft - meant the Tigers did not have the opportunity to bring any seasoned players to the club, though it is unclear whether they would have pursued recruits from other clubs given the strong state of their playing list.

Brandon Ellis, who crossed to Gold Coast on a five-year deal as a free agent, was unlikely to have been retained by the Tigers, regardless of whether there were extra funds available via Rance's retirement (Ellis crossed to the Suns in October).

Richmond will not be recruiting a young player who can bolster their list in pre-season, as spectacular flanker Sydney Stack did last year, since their list is full and they will not delist Rance. The Tigers also used a vacancy to land the storied Marlion Pickett in the mid-season draft.

Richmond's senior football consultant Neil Balme said last week that the chances of a Rance return were increasingly less likely. "In the back of our minds, we are still hoping that he might think about coming back but that's getting less likely I think," Balme told SEN.

"I did think that [he would return] but it was probably more optimism than any evidence.

"He's such a strong-minded kid that he doesn't tell you things for the fun of it, so we have to accept the fact that maybe it is the end for him.''

Put the money towards lowering our cap obligations and then chase a key defender.

Agreed.

Although, as a left handed, Jewish, African American lesbian who identifies as a Japanese, I’m not sure I should be agreeing with you!

We wanted him when he was 21, would absolutely chase him now.  Get Dusty on the case.

Riewoldt explains Tigers’ ‘silence’ on Rance

Rebecca Williams
Herald Sun
7 February 2020

Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt says his former premiership teammate Alex Rance is relishing his life after football.

Riewoldt revealed he had been in contact with the five-time All-Australian today and said Rance was loving his freedom away from the AFL.

Rance dropped a bombshell in December last year when he announced he was walking away from football to focus on his family and faith.

“I spoke to Rancey this morning and he is doing really great,” Riewoldt said.

“He said he was happy to be training when he wants to train and happy to go home from work when he wants to go home from work.

“He is in a great space and obviously it was a bit of a surprise to a lot of people, but he is doing really well and I think he is really enjoying life after footy.”

Asked if he thought Rance would ever play football again, Riewoldt said it was not something he was concerned about — only Rance’s happiness.

“Do I think he will play again? I have got no idea,?” Riewoldt said.

“I am not focused on whether he is going to play again for us or for local footy or anything like that, I’m just happy that he is happy. “

Riewoldt said he had been amazed at the attention the Richmond players received not coming out publicly to pay tribute immediately after the champion defender’s retirement.

“(I made) a lot less (of it) than what everyone else made of it,” Riewoldt said.

“I think the coach was quoted on the fact that we’d rather have a phone call or a face-to-face and tell him how much we love him rather than spread it all viral through social media.

“We’ve got an amazing connection at this football club that I think is unrivalled in the AFL and we show our support that way and we will continue to do that.”

Riewoldt admitted it had been a strange feeling not having Rance around at the club over the pre-season.

“I suppose it has been a little bit weird, to be honest. He is such a vibrant character, he has brought so much to this football club,” Riewoldt said.

“We have got a lot of guys that have come out of their shells and been themselves because they have followed in his footsteps.”

Possibly both. But mainly back, I think the out’s a bit of a red herring
