Robert Shaw on Deledio - not yet a premier midfielder

Robert Shaw is on with Mark Doran on SEN and was asked about elite mids in the comp and a caller mentioned Lids.

Shaw said Deledio is 22, played around 80 games, kicks goals, has pace and smarts. If on top you need to tag him. The next stage for him is to become a premier midfielder. Lids is a good guide as his development is closely aligned to Richmond's development. Emerging, flashy at times but no finals. You can't name Deledio as elite if we're comparing him to Judd or Ablett. Joel Selwood is ahead of Deledio. Deledio is on the precipice of becoming a premier midfielder. Shaw said he'd love to see him play in finals this year and really emerge in September. One we need to watch and see his development. Winning a B&F at 22 is a great effort.

Cotchin - fallen in behind Lids because he's come in later. All part of Richmond developing a strong midfield. He said at the end that Cotch is someone who could possibly pop up this year into the elite class.

Ben Cousins is elite. Elite is being able to perform in finals and perform over a long period of time.

I still contend that Wallace held Lids back from the real heavy midfield work until his body fully developed. We saw in 2008 that he has the ability and he was freed up to take on more midfield work.

The beauty of our midfield is now who does the opposition tag Lids? Foley? Cotchin? Cousins? Cogs? Tuck?

Can't tag them all and all but Cotchin - at the moment - can hurt you. Supporting each other we will see big things from that group

Can't be a bad thing for Tambling, Connors or White either. Nor Brownie when he gets a run in the guts

joel selwood doesn't kick goals, how is he ahead. Just another opinion from shaw,like bumholes everybody has one, most people would like them a little more informed than shaws. He can't even get lids age right.

Shaw's not far off the money but I do think Lids now has dibs as our best midfielder.

We saw how much Adam Cooney improved last season & I won't go so far as Brownlow medal but I have got a great feeling Brett's going to move into elite class in '09.

You wouldn't know a fact if it jumped up and bit you on your rump.  Winning a game off your own boot the sole criteria to judge a captain by is it?

Tom Harley is a premiership captain of one of the best modern day clubs going around - total of 12 Brownlow votes over his 11 year career so far, 1 x 3 vote game - 21 disposals v Bulldogs in a 10 goal win last season.  Yep, real matchwinner off his own boot that man.  Or how about Stuart Maxfield - another recent premiership captain of a very good modern side - total of 35 Brownlow votes in a 16 year career - 3 x 3 vote games, the latest being in season 1999, 4 years before he became captain.  Another standout matchwinner.

There is so much more to being a successful and influential captain but you have proved many times in the past that explaining it to you is a waste of time.
