Geez they are having a bad run, no Carrazzo, Stevens, O'Halpin, Warnock and a couple more will be missing from round one.

Fri, Feb 06, 09CARLTON has confirmed ball magnet Andrew Carrazzo will spend six weeks on the sidelines after breaking his left arm in the club's first practice match of the season.

Carrazzo was cannoned into in a marking contest in the second term and left Visy Park clutching his left arm.

Coach Brett Ratten initially suggested the injury would result in a one- to two-week layoff but scans confirmed the worst.

Carrazzo’s injury was a second sour note for the day after a violent clash between Setanta O’hAilpin and Cameron Cloke resulted in O’hAilpin being sent home to cool off and Cloke nursing a sore brow.

Tasmanian draftee Mitch Robinson provided one shining light, booting four goals and impressing in attack and through the midfield.

Marc Murphy also excited the crowd with a clever goal from a tight angle but spearhead Brendan Fevola struggled to get into the game.

Jarrad Waite spent his day across half forward while Sam Jacobs, Shaun Hampson and Cloke did the bulk of the ruck work.

Bryce Gibbs was neat, rookie Lachie Hill showed terrific endeavour and Kade Simpson was prolific in patches.

But the star of the day in his first outing at the level was the 18-year-old Robinson.

“I thought his performance was pretty good,” Ratten said of the No. 40 selection in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.

“I thought it was outstanding first up to do what he did, kick four goals and probably have around 15 or 20 possessions in probably 55 minutes of game time.”

The polished right-footer, who won the Harrison Medal for the best player in Division 2 of last year’s NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, led well and was composed when playing through the middle, despite being caught once or twice as the game wore on.

Chris Judd, Andrew Walker, Brad Fisher, Robbie Warnock, Steven Browne, Heath Scotland and Adam Bentick all sat out Friday’s clash while youngsters Chris Yarran and Jeffery Garlett were in Darwin preparing to play for the Indigenous All Stars.

But Ratten was content with those who did play.

“I just thought most of the blokes contributed and today was more about getting a lot more body contact,” Ratten said.

“We’ve still got another few weeks compared to other teams, to play, so we’ve got a little bit more lag time.

“I thought it was a great hit-out first up.”

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

Losing both Stevens and Carrazzo (turnover merchant) takes some depth out of their midfield but the later two weren't going to have much effect in 2009 anyway. O'hAilpin is a dud as well as an idiot.

Maybe but he always seems to do a number on us.

He is not alone in that boat over the last few years, probably more on it than the titanic.

But that was our midfield in the bad old days, this new crop of midfielders we have is looking the goods, speed, class and a bit of grunt to boot.
