I need to take a moment to thank Jordan McMahon for his kick after the siren which landed us pick 3 and got us dusty.

Also his class was out this world tonight. Can someone make a gif of his goal where he kept his feet on the dangerfield tackle?

Dustin Martin – 9
What more can be said about Martin? The game is better for him playing it. He almost single-handedly dragged the Tigers out of the mire at the end of the second, booting a crucial goal just before the main break. Ended the game with a four-goal haul, a third Norm Smith medal and officially a modern-day great.

Dustin ‘Norm’ Martin was simply stunning as the Tigers came from behind to win the game. He kicked a fine goal just before half-time just as the Tigers looked to be out of the contest. But he started the third quarter up forward and got the Tigers back in front during the quarter with a fine snap. He ended with four goals and 21 touches to create a memorable dynasty for the yellow and black.

Dusty's legend grows with historic third Norm Smith Medal

CHAMPION midfielder Dustin Martin has elevated himself to an unmatched level of greatness, becoming the first player to win a third Norm Smith Medal.

The Richmond superstar, who spearheaded his team's third premiership in four seasons, stamped himself as the modern game's greatest finals performer with four goals and 21 disposals against Geelong.

After matching the achievements of dual Norm Smith medallists Gary Ayres, Andrew McLeod and Luke Hodge last season, Martin joined a club all of his own at the Gabba on Saturday night.

The player of his generation, he became a triple premiership player and was presented with Norm Smith Medal by Port Adelaide's 2004 winner Byron Pickett.

He was unanimously adjudged best on ground, polling 15 votes to win the medal from teammate Jayden Short (six), Shane Edwards (four), Geelong's Mitch Duncan (three) and Nathan Broad (two).

The defining quality of Martin's match was his ability to impose himself on the contest when the Tigers most needed it. It is what made this arguably his best performance in a decider.

He had 29 possessions and two goals against Adelaide in 2017, and 22 and four against Greater Western Sydney last year's rout.

After winning his first Norm Smith Medal in 2017, Martin spoke about the freedom he felt playing football, not having to worry about anything else.

Winning his third premiership was "surreal", with the individual accolade an added bonus.

"It doesn't feel real," he said on Saturday night. "I'm just so grateful to be part of an unbelievable group. I'm lost for words to be honest."

With his team trailing by 21 points late in the second quarter on Saturday, Martin lifted and produced the first of his four goals.

Geelong defender Jake Kolodjashnij was sweating on him, but he pushed free and snapped truly over his shoulder. It was a big moment the Tigers could build on.

His second, late in the third quarter, gave the Tigers a lead they would never surrender, keeping his feet in the contest, breaking free, and converting with the inside out kick that comes so naturally to the skilled craftsman.

Martin sealed the match with a brilliant bouncing goal from beyond 50m and his fourth was the cream on top with a touch of symbolism, shaking off rival superstar Patrick Dangerfield in the pocket to set the Tiger Army into a frenzy.

The 29-year-old had a game-high nine score involvements and his five inside 50s and 457 metres gained ranked No.2 at the Tigers behind teammate Short.

For Geelong coach Chris Scott, Martin was "peerless" in the way he played. The Cats drew up multiple plans to combat him, but none worked.

"Sometimes you can do not a lot wrong and just get beaten by class," Scott said.

A ruthless competitor who finds a new level in big games, Martin's record in finals since 2017 is phenomenal.

The central figure in this Tigers dynasty, he has averaged 22.7 disposals and 2.3 goals in 11 finals.

Australian Football Hall of Fame Legends Leigh Matthews and Malcolm Blight each voted to give Martin his third Norm Smith Medal on Saturday night. It would appear to be only a matter of time until the immortal Tiger joins them in that exclusive club.

The Moment: With hope dangling by a thread, up stepped a superstar

Dustin Martin gave the Tigers belief at the moment when they needed him most

RICHMOND was on its haunches.

The Tigers had conceded five straight goals, they trailed by 21 points and, for perhaps the first time in their dominant four-year stretch at the summit of the entire competition, they needed a lifeline.

The looming half-time interval wouldn't just give Damien Hardwick's side a chance to catch its breath and regroup, it would provide a salvation. Hope wasn't lost, but it was dangling by a thread.

But when you have Dustin Martin, the greatest finals performer of his generation, you are always going to have belief. And at that moment, the moment when Richmond needed him most, belief is exactly what Dusty gave the Tigers.

Martin swept on the footy, shrugged aside the attentions of Jake Kolodjashnij with ease and, having not yet even grasped the ball with his full control, hooked an extraordinary right-foot kick around his body and through for a goal.

All of a sudden, the spark had been lit.

Yes, the deficit was still 15 points. Yes, Geelong was still in the ascendancy. But just like that, the momentum of the match had shifted. Just like that, doubt had been cast into the minds of the Cats at half-time.

Just like that, history – in Martin becoming the first ever player to claim a third Norm Smith Medal – had started to unfold.

In this, the most unprecedented of seasons – and in this, the most unfamiliar of venues, times and environments for a Toyota AFL Grand Final – there would at least be some semblance of familiarity in Martin's brilliance.

Never a player to simply pad the stats sheets, Martin's genius stems from his influence, his impact and the unique moments that only he can create. On Saturday night, that was the first of four moments that defined the Grand Final.

As the Tigers piled on eight of the next nine goals to march to a thrilling third premiership in four years courtesy of a 30-point win over the Cats, Martin's fingerprints were etched across every significant moment in Richmond's remarkable run.

He kicked the first goal to start the comeback, he kicked the fifth goal to reclaim the lead for Richmond, and he kicked the eighth goal to ensure that there would be no doubt as to the home of this year's premiership.

Martin would add a fourth goal in the game's dying moments to put the cherry on top. But at that point, it was simply party time. The damage had been inflicted, and the name 'Dustin Martin' had been carved into the Norm Smith Medal once again.

While Martin's first of the evening was the moment Geelong might have started to question the strength of its foothold within the game, his second was the moment the Cats probably knew an unstoppable tide was sweeping over them.

Another clean pick up, and another simply awesome finish – this one dribbled through with the outside of his right boot – was Richmond's fifth straight major of the match and, delivered midway through the third term, gave the Tigers their first lead since the opening quarter.

The Tigers wear teams down like no other, this was just another example of that. But when they do, Martin is the player who ensures there is no escape when they have you in their grasp.

Having added two more to make it seven straight goals, Richmond soon stretched its lead to 16 points midway through the final quarter on the back of Martin's heroics. Now, it just needed to land the killer blow. And who better to deliver that?
