Alex Rance not considering move to Fremantle with Tigers confident defender will stay at Punt Road

RICHMOND star defender Alex Rance could turn down a mega offer from Fremantle to help lead the Tigers’ push for a drought-breaking premiership.

After missing out on key backmen Harry Taylor (Geelong) and James Frawley (Hawthorn) in the past two years, it is believed the Dockers are prepared to offer free agent Rance as much as $750,000 a season to become the next linchpin in Ross Lyon’s defensive setup.

The Dockers are on the hunt for a senior replacement for veteran full-back Luke McPharlin, who is possibly entering his last season, aged 33.

But Rance has not yet considered a move back home to Western Australia and wants to recommit at Punt Rd, following moves from re-signed teammates Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin.

Richmond chiefs are confident of securing the 194cm backman on a long-term deal and are continuing talks on a new contract with his management, Stride Sports. He is out of contract at season’s end.

A Fremantle spokesman yesterday said: “We don’t comment on contract negotiations.”

The future of Adelaide free agent Patrick Dangerfield is much less certain, with industry sources widely expecting the blistering midfielder to seriously consider joining Geelong at season’s end.

Dangerfield has close family ties to Moggs Creek, 50km south-west of Geelong and has put off contract talks with the Crows until season’s end.

Hawthorn could also enter the frame as it looks to replenish an ageing midfield brigade led by veterans Sam Mitchell, Luke Hodge and Shaun Burgoyne.

Rance’s signature would be a massive coup in the Tigers’ patient list build. The club last won a premiership in 1980 and is this season looking for its first finals victory since 2001.

Rance, 25, is widely considered one of the best key defenders in the league and was rewarded for his excellent season last year with All-Australian selection.

He was a key figure in Richmond’s revival over the second half of last season, shutting down a string of power forward as the Tigers won nine of their last 10 games to clinch an unlikely finals berth.

His biggest scalps included St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt (three goals from two games), Port Adelaide’s Jay Schulz (four goals in two games), Adelaide’s Taylor Walker (one) and West Coast Eagles’ Josh Kennedy and Brisbane’s Daniel Merrett (no goals).

The stats don't reflect it but he outplayed Franklin last year also. It didn't help that the midfield kept pumping it to him but Rance definitely quelled his influence. Also he ran right through Adam Goodes which was awesome :D

Over the journey, Rance has more than held his own against Buddy.

In-demand free agent Rance free to leave if he wants

RICHMOND will be powerless to stop Alex Rance leaving if he accepts a rival free agency offer at the end of this year, with the 2014 All Australian defender not among this year's 11 restricted free agents.

Rance deferred talks with Richmond in January with the key defender understood to want to focus on making a good start to 2015 without the distraction of contract negotiations.

Fremantle is already believed to have expressed significant interest in the 25-year-old All Australian, who is likely to become one of the most sought-after free agents in this year's market given the large number of teams desperately seeking a quality key defender.

3. Alex Rance

The West Australian deferred contract talks with Richmond in January and has already attracted keen interest from Fremantle. However, the 25-year-old's family are now living in Melbourne and he is understood to be happy at Richmond. Quality key defenders are a rare commodity so the 2014 All Australian will almost certainly be able to field other rival offers if he remains on the market.

Will he stay or go? After an up-and-down start to his career, Rance is playing outstanding football under Damien Hardwick so it's hard to see him leaving Punt Road. The Tigers could have to pay up to $600,000 a season to keep him though.

Richmond remains very confident of keeping key defender Alex Rance beyond this season, according to coach Damien Hardwick.

There are currently 11 restricted free agents floating around the AFL across eight clubs, however Rance isn't one of those.

The 25-year-old is listed as an unrestricted free agent, meaning he is outside of the top 25% highest paid players at the Tigers, and can name his price and club of choice at season's end.

Coach Damien Hardwick insists they will hold on to their best defender.

“Alex is obviously a very important player for us, we’re pretty happy with where that sits right now,” he said.

“Dan Richardson and his squad are doing a very good job in that area making sure we get signatures on.”

“We’re very lucky that Dustin (Martin) committed long term, Trent Cotchin the same so we’re very confident.”

Rance has put off contract negotiations with the club until the end of this season.

Tigers upbeat Rance will stay in AFL

A media report last week stated Fremantle were prepared to make a big offer to Rance, originally from WA and who made his first All-Australian team last year.

It was well known Rance would qualify for free agency later this year, but not that it would be unrestricted.

While a restricted free agent's club can match any offers made to him, an unrestricted free agent can go where he wants.

"We were aware of Alex's free agency status, and whether he's restricted or unrestricted, it doesn't change how the club approaches his contract," said Richmond football manager Dan Richardson.

"He's an important player for us, we're in regular discussions with his management and understand Alex is very happy at Richmond."
