Why the stuff did cotch give them the wind in the first qtr??? Was just saying to my wife an hour before that the golden rule to winning interstate was get of to a good start and do t let th home team get their tails up. Game was over after 12 mins like the Ben cousins game lol

Cop out. We just played like shyte. Simple as that.

BTW -Tony - now do you see why pace is important?

It's a legitimate question, not an excuse - please - id like to know the logic behind that decision.

Also today there were bigger factirs than leg speed - gut running being one, outcoached two and the deer in headlights being 3.

Ill give my full thoughts when I get back to melbourne

what we always talk about, landing a big fish, trading 3 duds for 1 gun player and draft picks.
And you may not think I care for you

I explained  somewhere else here - and FWIW I don't agree - but I said it was to do with wanting the breeze in the last quarter which is normally Port's strongest. Of course we wouldn't have expected the game to be over by halfway through the second quarter.

There were many factors. leg speed was one of them - they ran away from us and broke lines because they were quicker , they ran us down because they were quicker

Another problem is we jus don't have enough one touch players - and the few we do can't maintain their skills under pressure, which comes back to composure.

Our tackling has been abysmal for years - technique is appalling - they don't watch the hips and there's to many with muppet arms, but also not enough closing speed - so again a pace issue.

All I saw today,  was our players always caught 15 metres behind their opponent when defending or our players being mugged 3 to 1 when attacking, not spreading, doing sweet FA running for most of the early part of the game.  Getting raped by the umpires hardly mattered, the four fifty metre penalties was kind of a giggle considering the scoreline.  Our blokes were just to stuffed to run and compete today, they looked shot from the outset and put zero pressure on them.

Winning the toss and kicking against a stiff breeze must have seemed like a good idea at the time. But Richmond captain Trent Cotchin has come under fire after Port Adelaide shot Sunday's AFL elimination final to pieces in the first quarter.

However Cotchin has found unlikely support from Port Adelaide dynamo Chad Wingard.

"The breeze was swirling around a bit... so it was a bit hard to pick an end," Wingard told SEN after the game.

"The breeze would go hard to one end, and then it would change around. Honestly, it kept changing and you had to adjust when you were kicking for goal."

Fair points on all. I agree that there was a difference in legspeed out there, but imo that was accentuated by them having the bit between the teeth and their relentless attack in waves on the ball created overlap which just made us look pedestrian.

Heard what Hinkley said - gotta give Cotch the benefit of the doubt but gee wiz I was behind the goals Port bombarded in the 1st qtr and the breeze was coming straight at us...

Anyhow - this is my take: First thing I'll touch on -  I only saw a handful of players that handled the tempo today - regardless of how well or poorly they played you can see clearly which players brought the intensity today and those that didnt. Morris, Rance, Lids, Cotch, Ivan Houli(but he killed us with his skill errors early) and to a lesser extent Miles. Everyone else including Ellis, Martin, Edwards, Martin, Floss etc etc etc  we're off the pace, don't care what the stats say, early when the game was on, only a handful were able to get their hands on a very hot ball. The rest were made to look like vfl players

Second: We met our superiors today. Some may not like hearing this but even at our best we couldn't have beaten Port today, hell our best would've struggled to get within 5 goals. They were fanatic, fast, strong and backed themselves in. From the moment the hoff spun on a dime and dobbed it from the boundary I thought oh stuff.

Coaches box: One thing I think dimma and his team do exceptionally well is pregame prep - its no coincidence we seem to get the jump on sides most of the time. Today however they got owned by Hinkley. First thing's first - the spare man - get rid of it, man them up do not allow opposition sides to have a spare- very rarely do I see us have the better of the 2 loose man in the game. We've done this quite well over the past 9 weeks, why today didn't we work harder at shoring it up?
Lids and Martin fwd - yes its worked exceptionally well the past 8-9 weeks having those 2 jets up fwd and having our hardworking midfield do the job - but a quick look at the historical stats will show a clear tale - Lids loves playing the power, has taken them apart many times, they just cant match up on him and once he was moved to midfield today - no coincidence he become one of our few winners.  Against an A grade midfield in port on their patch in a final - you don't play your workman midfield against them - you play your bluechip talent. Lesson learnt horses for courses - they can still be played fwd but there will come times that they will be required in the trenches.

1st qtr errors: I haven't watched the replay and probably wont - but stuff me what was with the errors, they scored about 4-5 goals from unforced errors? Houli losing it while taking a bounce, martin fumbling, morris missing a target 10 metres away, Chaplin having 10-15 metres start and JOGGING to the ball, got tripped and they run into an open goal but still he should have attacked the fall of the ball harder, that was the blunder of blunders today and that's saying something... bah!

No excuses, they were too good and a better side than us but it was the classic case of a perfect storm, our boys were diabolical, they kicked about 8 goals from the boundary!! and it happened to happen in a final involving Richmond of course just to highlight it.

BTW I was on the flight home with the team, sitting right in front of Dimma and assistants, basically surrounded at the front of the plane. Chaplin and Dimma above and beyond looked shattered - Dimma angry, Chaplin very down, almost felt sorry for the bloke, Griff too. They were pleasant enough, but didn't  chat too much, if there was a way to describe the group - they looked emotionally spent, but Lids is still a trooper, never turning down kids photo requests - hes a very polite young man

I reckon we played our final last week against the swans that game took a lot out of us and we looked out of puff after that game and then to travel again against power who run teams off the park.No excuses tho for a bad game like that to many guys cracked when the heat was on and went missing big time.We need some more leg speed tho and replace guys not up to it.

We did appear flat at the beginning and we never recovered. Had to start well didn't. For me it showed up the season long weaknesses in our side- the lack of leg speed and the lack of a genuine small forward. Our tackling was very poor. For me the players who stood up were Miles, Maric, Rance, Grimes, Lids and Edwards. Houli had an atrocious game-his disposal was very poor. Grigg was nowhere to be seen. Martin had a off day. Cotchin was well held. Gordon and Conca were okay. Liked the fact that Rance got into Gray's face in last quarter and was backed up by Maric. Need to bear this game in mind when recruiting over summer. Need a genuine tagger. Boak had a field day as he was not tagged.

Mark Robinson's dislikes from yesterday's loss:

DISLIKES

1. The back group.
Not a day to collectively go lame, but three of Richmond’s back six had poor ones. Jake Bachelor had duck eggs at half-time, duck eggs in a game where the ball was mostly inside their defensive half of the game. Morris didn’t have those Morris moments, the fierce tackling/pressure moments, and Troy Chaplin seemed lost in the occasion. Booed every time he touched the ball, which was nine times, and cheered three times for his three clangers including one when he fell over in the first quarter to allow Wines. He was tried forward as well, which didn’t work, culminating in him playing his worst game in the last 10.

2. Not all their fault, though.
The numbers suggest it was close, but Port ran harder — in numbers — and used the ball far better. The Tigers tried to clog the game midway through the first quarter, pushing four forwards up the ground, and still they couldn’t stop Port kicking 14 first-half goals as defenders were continually sucked to the contest. What was going on between the arcs? There had to be, at times, 28 players near the ball and yet Port were able to stream forward.

4. Blaming Cotch.
Mindset won this game, not the wind, and anyway Port kicked eight goals with it and six against it. On the ground itself, it appeared swirly and slightly favouring the city end. Let’s be honest, the wind didn’t help Port forwards find space in the first quarter.

Some great points on where we got it wrong and more importantly how stuffing good tHe Powere were.
Hats off, they played super finals footy and we can learn a thing or two.
Their intensity at the tigers reminded me of the dockers against the swans in the prelim last year.
I reckon we played our GF last week.
It showed.

Glad to be home.

For me the highlight was the drive down to Adelaide on Saturday with the scarf hanging out the window and the acknowledging of RFC fans on the trip down the honking of horns or stopping at Keith roadhouse and having a chat with an RFC fan. The road trip is great.

Further to that meeting up with mates in Adelaide, the pre game atmosphere and the beauty of the Adelaide Oval. That's where it ended.

Sunday was just terrible. Need to cut these glass half empty types.

We were outcoached, outhought, outrun, outackled, outclassed in every facet. :help

Cotch...You need to understand one thing when you play in Adelaide. You never ever, ever kick against the breeze.

A) you go with the wind every time you win a toss at Adelaide Oval

B) the wind always changes late in the afternoon in Adelaide, therefore you will find you have a bigger advantage by going with it in the 1st place.

C) it is always better to start anything you do in life with your advantages.

D) Cotch I have captained many things in life and you will learm from this. Don't take this to heart we all have to learn the hard way sometimes and one thing you learn is you can only get better from your mistakes in life. Trust me I have made plenty but have got stronger and better from them.

Cotch - You need to get some inside information from your loyal supporters when playing interstate in the future.
