Matildas lost 2-3 to Nigeria after being 1-0 up  :P. The focus from the commentators was on all the injuries to our first 11 forwards. But we lost the games in the back half. All 3 goals conceded due to poor defensive lapses. The last one was U9s stuff :facepalm. The first one just before half-time changed the momentum of the game. Why when we're 1-0 up with a minute or two to go before the break would our defensive mids press up hard too offensively leaving us exposed behind them. The dumbest thing was we got barely away with it once and then we did the same stupid thing straight away and coughed up the goal  :banghead.

The Matildas are now third and will struggle to get out of the group needing to beat Canada without our primary forwards available. In any case, if we play like we have so far in the first two games, we won't get through anyway. The first half bar the last two minutes was fairly good, but the second half was listless, sloppy and dysfunctional. Most of the team was often standing on the spot, flat-footed and reactive. Only in the last 10 minutes with us 1-3 down did we show any urgency and intensity but despite getting one back it was too late. Just not good enough.

Sam Kerr is available to play Canada but hasn’t confirmed the minutes she’ll play 48 hours out from the must-win clash.

Matildas 2-0 at half-time. Should be 3. Technically off-side via the technology (by half a heel), but no way before VAR would or should that be called. That would've been paid a goal for 150 years before VAR.

Kerr on the bench. Matildas will only sub her on if they need her.

Matildas 4-0 over Canada as well as finish top of the Group. Kerr not needed, so she gets another week to rest that calf and get it right. A perfect result tonight  :thumbsup.

We play in the final 16 the runner-up of Group D (England, Denmark, China or Haiti) up in Sydney.

Soccer just isn't my thing, just don't get it

But I'm disappointed I missed the Canadian player going of her head and calling the ref a tw-t

Saw it on Twitter (or X as it's been rebranded)

Very good performance in a high pressure game. Onto the KO stages.

Lacklustre first 20 mins by the Matildas but the goal against the run of play woke us up. Fowler's through ball to Foord was sublime  :clapping.

Matildas win 2-0 (Foord & Raso the goalscorers) and through to the Quarterfinals against either France or Morocco. Pretty much controlled the game once we took the lead. Happy to sit back and hit Denmark on the counter.

ps. Kerr was subbed on for the last 10 mins and blew out the cobwebs. We haven't needed her as yet.

Matildas win 7-6 on penalties!!!  :highclap

:phew

That was crazy. Up to 10 penalties shots for each team before it was decided.

Very, very lucky tonight. Last 50 mins of general play was rubbish. We just kept hoofing the ball away and giving France possession and territory. Then we missed two opportunities to win it during the penalties. Vine nailed the third chance to send us through.

Onto the semis for the first time  :clapping.
