Richmond remain confident Dustin Martin won’t leave for the Gold Coast Suns

Staff Writers from Nca Newswire
August 26th, 2023

Dustin Martin added another Richmond trophy to his cabinet this week which interim coach Andrew McQualter said was evidence of how “invested” the superstar is at Punt Road amid talk of a potential reunion with Damien Hardwick on the Gold Coast.

Martin took out the club‘s annual golf tournament, despite being ”pretty horrible at golf” and McQualter was adamant the triple-premiership winner had given zero indication of a desire to leave Punt Road.

Amid the club-wide “shock” of seeing premiership coach Hardwick unveiled by the Suns this week in a red polo after 13 seasons in yellow and black came reports Martin, 32, could possibly look to finish his career on the glitter strip.

The exits of premiership teammates Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin, who have both retired, fulled that talk, although Martin is contracted for two more seasons at Richmond.

McQualter, who confirmed he would be interviewed for the full-time coaching job as soon as next week. said Martin, who was best on ground in last week’s win over North Melbourne, was still completely committed to Tigerland. .

“He can’t perform the way he does without being incredibly invested. He’s in a great space,” McQualter said.

“He won our annual golf tournament yesterday. He’s pretty pleased with himself because he’s pretty hopeless a golf. That’s the beauty of handicaps.

“But he’s in a great spot.”

Still our best player. Absolutely nothing to gain trading him.

From Champion Data's Daniel Hoyne:

It really is ridiculous what Dusty is doing this year and getting hardly any recognition.

At half time - 22 disposals, 9 contested, involved in 9 scores, and only attended 3 centre bounces.

Judge him against the comp not against himself and he should be a walk AA selection.

https://twitter.com/Hoyney35/status/1695644084940198134

-------------------------------------

Dusty finished up with:

33 disposals (16k, 17h, 14c, 18u, 72.7% eff.)
2 marks
5 tackles (2 F50 tackles)
7 inside 50s
4 clearances (1 centre clearance)
408 metres gained
4 intercepts
12 score involvements
1 goal assist
1 goal
1 behind
86% time on ground

Was Dusty's 2023 of All-Australian calibre?

If Martin decides to be captain holy poo I’m putting money on us to make the GF. I feel like he’s grown into something more since coming back after needing to grieve and nurse his kidney

I would never want him to be captain, doesn’t need the extra load to carry. Let him play free

Jon Ralph on twitter:

62 shots at goal so far this year for 24.22 and 16 total misses. The inaccuracy is the only thing that will deny him a fifth All Australian nod. Still, he does have three Norm Smith medals and three flags so he might not be that fussed if he misses out.

Tigers boss fears ‘absurd’ Dusty All-Aus snub — but says it’s proof he won’t be traded

Jason Phelan from Nca Newswire
Foxsports
August 27th, 2023

McQualter is confident the 32-year-old superstar will finish his career at Punt Road despite speculation he could link up with new Gold Coast coach Hardwick at the Suns.

“It’s really clear that you can’t play the type of football Dustin has played without being so heavily invested in the football club,” the coach said.

“I think he just loves it, he cares about winning so much and … if he’s not in serious contention for the All Australian team, it’s absurd.

“I just think what he has been able to do, playing as a forward, is just quite extraordinary for what he’s been able to produce this year.”

From Barrett's late Sunday version of his 'Sliding Doors' column:

IF ...
Cotch and Jack played their last games as Tigers in round 23 ...

THEN ...
we won't know for some time yet if round 24 was Dusty's final one. Yes, I know he's contracted for 2024, but only when the upcoming trade period comes and goes will we know for sure where this all-time great will be in 2024, with Dimma already in his head.
