we still could, if we are willing to use our first round pick on a player who will most probably be 3-4 years away from having any real impact.
I think that is the main reason the priority was Hampson. Longer could very well turn out to be rubbish too.
Brisbane 'reportedly' wanted 17 and a player for Longer, so essentialy the Hawks went and spent the same amount on getting McEvoy.

Unless we get a mid who has been in the system for a few years (Adams type) then I'd hold on to pick 11 (12 after compos) and draft another gun. No secret that we are becoming a better side with the natural improvement each year of those first rounders (Martin, Conca, Ellis, Vlastuin).

Looks like we pulled the trigger to early on Hampson.
We could be into longer up to our eyeballs right about now :(
Longer wouldn't get a game next season for us, so not sure how he would help alleviate Maric's load.  Nothing really to point to him being a quality ruck either, other than he was a top 10 pick in his year.

It's not about next year with Longer, it's about 2-3 years from now when we don't have a ruckman at all. The Bog O dig a great job chopping out this year why can't he do the same next?
All I'm saying is if we hung in there we may have ended up with Longer for next to nothing.

When that time comes, we'll probably be in the place to trade our first pick and a player who can't get a game for an established younger ruck (like McEvoy). Let someone put in the hard yard and develop them then we'll pinch them  ;D

St Kilda :facepalm

-------------------------------------------

MELBOURNE has denied reports that it has come to a mutual agreement with its 30-year-old ruckman Mark Jamar to trade him to another club.

Player manager Tim Hazell says there has been "plenty of interest" in delisted Gold Coast midfielder Maverick Weller. He's hopeful the Tasmanian will be picked up as a delisted free agent.

There are suggestions that St Kilda are making a play for Brisbane ruck, Billy Longer despite Hawthorn list manager Graham Wright saying that the Hawks are still after his services.

The Hawks will still have a first round compensation pick to play with.

Hawks have picked up Ben McEvoy, Savage and Hawks first rounder to the Saints.

Now that's how you trade

Can you image if Richmond traded #11 and a best 22 player?
