Soldo tries but I've seen better ruckman in the EFL. We are kidding ourselves if we think he will get to a level that is expected of an AFL player. We aim too low when it comes to ruckman.
No way in hell he will become as good as Maric and he at his best is only just AFL level.  We need to aim higher than just guys that can compete, we need champions in the middle of the ground giving us first use of the footy.

I think we need to remember he's a category B rookie. If he plays an AFL game he's done well. So I do agree with you that we need better ruck stocks but putting the blame on him is stiff. He should be learning off a better ruckman in the two's instead of sharing the load with someone like Griffiths :lol
Don't get me wrong- no blame his way. He should just be learning at a different level than our twos side. Rookie or not, if you aren't up to reserves footy, you shouldn't be playing. It's hurting the rest of the side and it's development playing a guy like this IMO. It's not right our potential midfielders have to try and learn from a guy that has played 2 years of footy.

VFL Tigers squander lead to Dolphins

richmondfc.com.au
24 April 2016

Richmond’s VFL side surrendered a 29-point quarter-time lead on Saturday afternoon as Frankston saluted by 13 points in its first win since 2014.

The Tigers burst out of the blocks and kicked five goals in the blink of an eye and then watched its advantage whittle away in the last quarter as final scores finished 14.15 (99) to 13.8.(86) in the Dolphins favour.

Richmond clung to a five-point lead at three-quarter time as senior coach Craig McRae coolly urged on his chargers for the crucial final term.

Unfortunately, the Dolphins gained the lead in the opening minute of the last and never looked back, slamming on five-goals-to-three which had the Frankston supporters in raptures.

McRae acknowledged post-game his players simply didn’t work hard enough for long enough and structurally broke down in the second half.

“Our leaders didn’t stand-up for four quarters,” McRae said.

“Our defenders lost their shape and we couldn’t get the game played in our half.”

With the late withdrawals of Jacob Townsend and Taylor Hunt, Richmond lacked an enhanced presence at the coalface, which ultimately led to its undoing.

In a dominant midfield display, Frankston dominated Richmond in the centre square, winning the centre clearances 16–4 and generated 12 of its 14 goals between the arcs.

In stark contrast, the Tigers could only muster 1.3 to the Dolphins 6.3 from stoppages, and at times were left chasing through the midfield.

In a game of territory, the game was won and lost in the midfield and the young Tigers couldn’t get the game played in their half, and eventually, the dam wall broke.

“We started to lose clearances and when it became a game of territory and played long, we couldn’t get it in our forward half and hold it in there,” McRae said.

In a lightning opening stanza, returning Tiger tall Ben Griffiths made his presence felt with imperious strength in the air and at ground level and led his side to a 29-point lead at quarter-time.

“When we were up and about, he was the main reason,” McRae said.

Griffiths had support to his left and right as Mabior Chol and Liam McBean loomed ominously as the trio bagged four of the Tigers’ six first-term goals.

Chol slotted two in the first term and finished the day with a game-high four majors in a breakout performance for the energetic Tiger rookie.

McRae labelled Chol’s performance “his best game for the club” and hopes it’s a sign of things to come.

Tenacious Richmond on-baller Adam Marcon (32 disposals) worked tirelessly, while Jason Castagna and Sam Darley had 23 touches respectively, and provided drive off half-back.

In support of Chol, Anthony Scott bagged three goals, with McBean, Soldo, Griffiths, Conca and Butler chiming in with one.

Richmond faces a stern test against Sandringham fresh-off a 28-point Round 3 win next Saturday at Punt Road Oval from 4:30pm.

Do we have access to lower levels? When we were with Coburg we had the development team that players could play for but what about now?

They can send category B rookies like Soldo to the suburban leagues I think....what we did with Gideon Simon...

Richmond’s VFL coach Craig McRae provides an exclusive summary of the AFL and VFL-listed players who featured in last Saturday’s match against Frankston.

AFL-listed

Adam Marcon
32 disposals, 20 contested possessions, seven clearances, six tackles

Continued his good form at VFL level, he was a really solid contributor for us. He had 32 disposals, he just needs to tidy up his kick and handball efficiency but his effort was really strong. He was a really good contributor on the day.

Andrew Moore
24 disposals, 12 contested possessions, six clearances, nine tackles

Returned from an AFL opportunity, he was a solid contributor without having a massive impact. His nine tackles stood out, along with his 12 contested possessions.

Jason Castagna
23 disposals, 15 uncontested possessions, 11 handball receives

Jason went back after playing forward for the last few rounds, he continues his good form. He has great athletic qualities and is covering the ground really well. He’s getting close to AFL opportunity.

Liam McBean
15 disposals, four contested marks, ten contested possessions, one goal

Liam started the game really strongly. He was a main reason why we were four or five goals up at half time. He had four contested marks; all of them inside 50, which is a good sign for him. Ten contested possessions is also a reflection of him coming at the football. He died off in the second half which was a little bit symbolic of the team.

Jayden Short
15 disposals, 10 uncontested possessions, eight handball receives

Played through the wing and didn’t have the impact of recent games. He still did a couple of nice things. We still need him to get on the end of ball movement chains off half-back.

Ivan Soldo
22 hit-outs, 15 disposals, nine contested possessions

Started the game really well in the ruck and tired as the game went on and looked quite sore in the end. Frankston dominated centre clearance which is something he needs to work on to be competitive for four quarters. He played against a really good player, Frankston’s ruckman has been around a while and has really good experience. It was a good lesson learnt and Soldo had a really good contested mark and goal early in the game.

Todd Elton
14 disposals, seven contested possessions, four marks

Played key-back and continues to have ebbs and flows in his game. He has some good moments and then some poor lapses in concentration. We’re looking for him to have a four quarter effort.

Ben Griffiths
14 disposals, eight contested possessions, 19 hit-outs, two contested marks

Returned from injury and looked really strong in the aerial contests. He was another one who impacted the game early with his contested marking and ended up with five (marks) for the game, including a really strong one (contested mark) early in the game for a goal. He played also in the ruck and had a little bit of an impact, but again we were beaten in clearance so we need a stronger performance through our rucks.

Nathan Broad
12 disposals, nine uncontested possessions, six handball receives

Played on a wing and then went to half-back, he had a really solid performance last week and tailed off this week. His tackling efficiency and intent was poor on the day which has to improve. We also need him to run and carry the footy, as we saw the previous week.

Mabior Chol
Four goals, 12 disposals, seven contested possessions, two contested marks

Played his best game for the club. He finished the game with four goals and his marking was a feature as well as his intensity around the contest was a progression from previous rounds.

Dan Butler
10 disposals, six handball receives, two tackles, one goal

Played forward, another who came in and out of the game. His tackle pressure is something we need from him and his intent, similar to Broad was poor and something he needs to work on.

Ben Lennon
Nine disposals, six contested possessions, two tackles

Started the game slowly in the first quarter, built into it nicely in the second and then unfortunately copped a head knock late in the second quarter, just before half time and didn’t return.

Oleg Markov
Nine disposals, seven uncontested possessions, five handball receives

Played at half-back for the first time in his career and looked really promising at times. His attack in the aerial contests and his run-and-carry with the ball showed he’s got something to offer down there.

Callum Moore
Eight disposals, four marks, two tackles

We were a bit disappointed in a couple of his disciplinary acts and we’ll address that during the week.

Sounds like a bit more of an honest assessment for once....

Markov of half back now.....do we need to play every bloody kid there?

Hope the comments about Callum Moore don't mean they want him to "tone down his aggression".....same mistake we made with Arnot after his first year....don't have enough aggressive blokes in the side as it is....and even less that are also talented with it....

At least, from my interpretation anyway, McRae seems to realise that McBean faded because our midfield did....as tends to happen to most forwards when their midfield starts getting beaten, the supply dries up and the match is being played down the other end....

C. Moore doesnt need to tone his aggression down but he does need a refresher on the rules. He gave away a 50m penalty because he simply didn't want to give the ball back to the oppo and was asked by the umpire on 4 occasions to do so.....undisciplined. The other was he played on from a kick in but failed to kick the ball to himself prior to running out of the goal square :P Both were seen from the interchange as unnecessary and momentum killers......got dragged and received a spray for the first brain fade.

It's funny 2 people watching the same game see it so differently. The first Moore 50, that was 10m from me at the time was because he thought it was his free kick. The umpire put his hand up the wrong way. The ump blew the whistle a few times but he thought it was for him to move the footy on quicker. A good umpire would have realized the mistake and just made him give the ball back. Nothing to do with not knowing the rules.

Being kind BT as it was clear he ran too far and given the opposition made no physical contact with him what else was the umpire blowing the whistle for? The umpire clearly told him 4 times to hand the ball back.....gee even the coaches box could even hear the instruction from the ump. Take your point it about it not being about the rules but his error kicking the ball back in was a shocker and that's about rules. All that being said, I do like what he has to offer and looks exiting if he develops ;)

I know it doesn't matter but are we even talking about the same thing. The one I'm talking about was on the boundary line, backward of centre at the opposite end from the ocean, our coaches box side.
The whistle blew, the ump pointed the wrong way and Moore went and physically got the footy and returned behind the mark ready for his kick. The ump was blowing the whistle but his eyes were at where he was going to kick the footy. I'm assuming he thought the whistle was to hurry up.
I'm happy to whack blokes but this wasn't undisciplined. A bit stupid maybe but as I said the ump knew he wasn't wasting time on purpose but still gave the 50.
Anyway no big deal.
