Below foxsports.com.au has ran through every club’s most intriguing players set to come off contract this year.
RICHMOND
West Australian defender and restricted free agent Nathan Broad is reportedly being courted by the Eagles, according to AFL journalist Damian Barrett. Given Broad has already won three flags at the Tigers, could he be tempted by a big rival offer? Dylan Grimes and Kamdyn McIntosh can become free agents and Toby Nankervis, Noah Balta and Jack Graham are also out of contract. It leaves uncertainty around several key pillars in Richmond’s defence, while the South Australian Graham met with Port Adelaide last off-season. Club legends Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt remain without deals too as they approach the end of their careers, even though the latter leads the Tigers’ goalkicking.

Correction: Grimes just re-signed for next year.
-
:facepalm
If the media are going to write stories like this the really should do some fact checking first
Jack Graham has hit a trigger clause in his current contract that gives him a contract for 2024
So take him off the list
-
Balta has just re-sigend as well
2 more years
List is getting smaller :rollin
-
So really that just leaves
Broad
Nank
McIntosh
Jack
Cotch
Don't think the later are a concern, nor do I think is Nank. Broad and KMac who knows.
-
Out of contract at the end of 2023:
Broad, Castagna, Cotchin, Dow, Mansell, McIntosh, Pickett, Ralphsmith, Riewoldt, Tarrant.
Rookies:
Mate Colina - third year in 2023
Bigoa Nyuon - second year in 2023
Jacob Bauer - second year in 2023
Seth Campbell - first year in 2023
Kaelan Bradtke - first year in 2023
n.b. red signifies that Castagna has already retired.

Riewoldt, Cotchin and Tarrant will retire.
McIntosh and Ralphsmith should be traded; and
Mansell should be delisted.
I would only keep Dow and Pickett from that group.
Keep all the rookies except for the Basketballer who has less chance of making it than me and I've just hit 40.
-
This year is not the year to have a clean out although i think it is time. Simple reason is we have traded out of the first round already and we really need quality picks to start the rebuild off.
As it is i reckon for starters obviously Castagna is gone and i think Riewoldt, Cotchin and Tarrant need to retire.
Colina and Nyuon delist both are only rookies anyway. Mansell delist.
Definately looking for better than McINtosh Soldo and Short so would offer them up to get back into the draft Would also be looking at offers from clubs if they were interested in Dusty. Broad if he wants to go would also look to d and i think Baker would get us decent trade or pick.
If in Dow, Cumberland and Ross boots id be looking for more opportunity else where not that dow and Ross would generate great interest imo.
For now happy to keep them another year.
Others i have concerns about are MRJ, Miller Young.
Its a long list but my perspective is we have run our race and it is time to go the full rebuild because imo with the talent below the older blokes who are not far way from being gone anyway is not good enough.

Nyuon is actually in his 4th year.Ben Miller is also a rookie in his 6th season.

Nyuon is actually in his 4th year.Ben Miller is also a rookie in his 6th season.
That's total years on our list. Remember they were both drafted originally onto the senior list. Miller was drafted in the 2017 National draft at pick 63. Biggie hasn't been on the rookie list for 4 years. He was pick 54 in the 2019 National draft before being delisted and redrafted in the 2021 rookie draft at pick 7. This is only his second year on our rookie list.

Whatever the obvious point being made was they have been around longer then the two seasons you make it appear.
In my view it looks even worse that they have been demoted backwards to the rookie list.

Alright how do we get back into the draft/acquire young talent.
We have few players we can/should trade that would get us 1st round picks but we may have to lose a couple to ensure we don’t completely bottom out in a few years. A really quick overhaul of our young players on the list is an urgent issue imo because this group will not takes us forward.

FA is the only real possibility and that comes at a cost. case in point blues. saad, mcloivin and zac williams thats 2 mil right there and they are average IMV, esp the last 2. No one like ben king would come to us. I would have my money that he goes to the pies.
No team wins flags without top end talent and what we have now is former top end talent, which means our only real possibility is 2024 as we totally stuffed up in getting hopper. A tom mitchell would have been better if it was all about staying in contention.
Only shai, lynch, and noah would demand a first rounder, broady and dusty second. The rest late second to nothing.
The writing was on the wall was there 2 years ago, but the coaching department were dilusional and thought another flag was possible. To copy the cats which rarely happens was fanciful, and has set us back.
i see us completely having to bottom out to acquire a top end midfielder, much like the hawks and eagles are doing.

I don't remember being this uninterested in Richmond since 2016. I think it's because we have nothing to look forward to in this space because we haven't even admitted that we need to rebuild yet, so the current team is crap and tomorrow's team isn't yet coming into view.
I'm not sure I want a Swans/Geelong fan experience for the next 15 years.
-
Here's a hypothetical for you:
If the Eagles finish last would you entertain trading Shai Bolton for Pick 1.
Would the Eagles be tempted?
Which club would have to add more to make it happen?

I feel the same, the AFL planned cycle AFTER premiership/s has well and truly come to fruition for RFC.

Nope wouldn’t even entertain it . Any draft pick is a lottery . The higher the pick the less risk but a risk nevertheless

I find Bolton's performance a lottery half the time.
Who here said he's the cream on top? So true. Not a player you can build a team around unlike Rance, Cotchin or Jack.
WCE would be mad to do it.

Seeing that Harley Reid is a Victorian they might but they'd play hard ball in wanting some good shiney steak knives with it. Bolton is probably too old to be part of their rebuild.
They want someone younger and pretty good as well. Bolton and Baker would be something I'd expect they'd ask for.

That was me, last year. And now hardwick is gone you can only assume we are gonna see a lot of turnover and probably bottom out. So let’s load up on picks and get our next Cotchin, dusty, Jack, rance.. coz they’re not on the list now

You are bang on here FJ.
At end of day I still agree with what we intended to do. One last try vs accepting we are done and rebuild. A set back of 1-2 years is worth trying to get one more I honestly think. This is different to Hawks error who weren't successful at all and finished top 4 on the back of a lucky draw and results and got thrashed in finals.

Baker is actually a player a wouldn't trade personally.

as much as i didnt want both of them, namely Hopper, you have to feel for them. This is not great for them no matter how its dressed up. It has backfired big time IMO.
They were sold a pup for at least the next 3 years which takes Hopper to 30/31.
I would seriously look to trade Hopper to a club that is competing, and pay some of his wage to get back into this draft.

I dunno, I think it sends a horrible message to the playing group and future free agents if we dump him like that out of a bit of buyer's remorse.
-
Going have to be brave this year simple as that players up for trade and retirements etc not impossible to get back in this years draft with good strategies.
-
Salary cap is another issue. Someone has to be left on a big contract.

If we want to start replicating the sort of idiotic & demoralising club destroying decisions made post '82 and piiss away all our good will that's a sure fire way to go about it.... :shh

Besides it sending a bad message, we will need TT and Hopper’s experience and hard bodies in the midfield during the next phase.
I am open to trading back into the draft though.
We will need to be very active and creative this summer.
-
I’m open to trading Dustin if we can get something decent.
At his age, he won’t be part of the next charge and it would free up a lot of cap space.
-
I can't even think of stuff like that today.

I don’t understand, you’re open to trading dusty, a club legend, but not one of hopper or Taranto
(2 guys acquired to have our ‘last dance’ as dimma put it. )
If dusty wanted to play elsewhere than that’s different of course

Perhaps now yes, but if hopper is say 29 and we are languishing much like the hawks are now its stupid not to part ways.

Yes because those two just arrived on long term deals and they should have 5-6 years left and could be part of the next tilt.
Dusty is coming to the end and I don’t think he’d be up for a rebuild, nor is he likely to here for the next tilt.
It’s not a question of who I love or admire more. It’s about stage of career.

That was me a few weeks ago. It sums him up perfectly. He is not going to get 30 disposals week in week out or 7 clearances or 10 contested possesions. What you will get and mostly do get is periods in games where he has a lot of impact and long periods where you get nothing.
Has pace and i hate the saying X factor. But his size is a concern when teams clamp down on him.

Moneyball: The latest contract updates on players on rival radars
Jay Clark, Jon Ralph, Sam Landsberger and Glenn McFarlane

RICHMOND
Trent Cotchin
Contract expires 2023
Seems more likely to hang up the boots than play on but he has definitely had more impact in the midfield midseason under Andrew McQualter.
Jack Riewoldt
Contract expires 2023
Already swapping jumpers with Tom Hawkins in a fair sign this year is a farewell tour. Would probably rather to bow out still playing good footy like Joel Selwood than playing on for one season too many.
Thomson Dow
Contract expires 2023
Every game in the back half of the season will count for the fringe midfielder who is looking to show he is able to cut it at the level.
Robbie Tarrant
Contract expires 2023
Been hit hard by a hip injury this year which will almost certainly see the defender retire at season’s end.

Reckon if Jack retires the need is not for one but two key forwards. Preferably a mature recruit and a junior.
If Tarrant retires and Young is not up to it which is my opinion atm there is only really Miller and Nyuon left as depth who can play back. trouble is with both of them they have stopped developing them as defenders.
That being the case it only leaves Balta and Gibcus who should hold down the key posts for years but a kpd would be a fairly high priority for me looking long term and depth.
Grimes will be 32 and Broad 30 they are the only third tall defensive types we have. It may not be a big problem if Bauer plays the role but in doing that we deplete our key fwd/tall stocks even further than they already are.
We are in severe need of either a third tall defender or third tall forward depending on what way we go with Bauer just to cater to the future.
We have 4 primary ruckmen.Nankervis 29. Soldo 27, Colina 24 and Ryan 23.
Imo Ryan just needs to be played from here on in. Colina will be 24 on the list for three years and not even played a vfl game we have to replace him and i would look to trade Soldo to help get us back into the nd.For me another ruckman is needed given trades and delistings.
We have 6 medium and small defenders and can add Baker and Short to the list as mids who can play back.
The oldest is Vlastuin at 29 and the one i would delist is Mansell who we no longer play back anyway. Numbers are adequate for now.
Brown Banks and Smith all look likely and need to be further developed.
Medium and small forwards well they are basically smalls with Cumberland the biggest at 183cm.
Castagna has retired. it won't go down well but i don't think MRJ will make it. his skills are just so poor atm.
Won't be surprised if Cumberland does not ask for a trade. That leaves Coulthard, Campbell and Clarke just think we need that will othe wisp kick goals out of their asses type.
For now with other priorities small fwd can wait.
Outside mids including wings. We have 5 including Short. McIntosh 30 Pickett 32 Ross 23 all lack hurt factor with ball in hand it leaves Ralphsmith who i think should be delisted. Really need an elite by foot wing with a big motor who does not panic.
Mids Martin 32 and Bolton 25 both are extremely dangerous fwds as well as being primary mids I think Taranto 26 can go here as well.
It leaves 34 year old Cotchin who will likely retire and Prestia 31 yo who is injury prone.Baker 26yo, Hopper 27yo, Green who i dont see anything in him Graham who is average and Dow who may be delisted. It makes for slim pickings especially when Prestia Dusty and Cotchins age are considered. There is so much work needed here.
For me for starters im looking fo a big explosive inside out mid to replace Dusty. Im also looking for a hard nosed hard at it mid with a bit of size to replace Cotchin for now.
Lots of work is needed obviously it cannot all be done in one go but the work needs to be started.

From Jon Ralph in the HeraldSun:
Richmond’s club legends Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt are expected to ease into retirement at the end of the season for a club with a list in transition as it fast-tracks the likes of Noah Cumberland, Samson Ryan, Josh Gibcus and Judson Clarke.
The Tigers are interested in GWS swingman Harry Himmelberg and will try to attract an experienced key position forward to replace Riewoldt if the free agent re-signs at the Giants.
Samson Ryan and Ben Miller are still raw, Noah Cumberland is a mid-sized forward, and Lynch’s latest foot issue is a reminder he is not especially durable.
Lynch is listed on the club’s injury list at 7-12 weeks with his metatarsal fracture so it would take something exceptional for him to play again after only four games this year.
While there are many key position backs on the free agency and trade table key forwards are few and far between.
Richmond has been blessed to rely on Jack Riewoldt’s star power and durability for so long, with the triple premiership star playing 13 seasons of at least 20 games in the 14 years from 2009-2022.

Where does your club spend its salary cap
Does your club splash the cash on the right players – and in the right positions on the ground? See who gets the biggest slice of the pie at every team, and what comes next.
Jay Clark, Jon Ralph, Glenn McFarlane and Sam Landsberger
HeraldSun
July 11, 2023
How your club uses its $14.7 million in salary cap this year has massive consequences on its ability to keep stars, to build a premiership list and retain some space for the star free agent to fill a key list hole.
At Richmond it is the mid-forwards like Dustin Martin who are million dollar men, with Shai Bolton to follow in his footsteps next year.
Glenn McFarlane, Jay Clark, Jon Ralph and Sam Landsberger assess where your club has spent its cash this season.
RICHMOND
Dustin Martin $1,250,000-$1,350,000, 32, Midfielder/Forward
Tom Lynch $925,000-$1,025,000, 30, Forward
Tim Taranto $700,000-$800,000, 25, Midfielder
Jacob Hopper $700,000-$800,000, 26, Midfielder
Dion Prestia $625,000-$725,000, 30, Midfielder
Shai Bolton $600,000-$700,000, 24, Midfielder/Forward
Nick Vlastuin $600,000-$700,000, 29, Defender
Richmond hasn’t budged from the strategy that prevailed in its premiership years that the midfield is where the bulk of its high-end salary cap should be spent. Leaving aside key forward Tom Lynch and experienced defender Nick Vlaustin, the investment is heavily in the engine room. But the beauty of that is that two of those players – Dustin Martin and Shai Bolton – are mid-forwards who are dangerous in both areas of the ground. Lynch’s deal was heavily back-ended, which means he is on close to $1 million now. Martin has one more year to run on his monster deal that helped to change the club’s fortunes. Does he see it out? Those close to him say he will, and he looks invested. Tim Taranto’s deal is a long one, but looks darn cheap now given his first season at Punt Rd could yet end in a Brownlow Medal. Bolton might be the Tigers’ most important player going forward. He is an exceptional value player right now, but his price will skyrocket next season as his new long-term deal starts.

I think its as simple as the best players are being paid the most. Reckon its the same at all clubs
Before getting old i think we will find Riewoldt and Cotchin were among our highest paid along with Rance before retirement.

Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin showed as recently as Sunday against West Coast that although they will retire at season’s end, they will do so capable of strong team football.
Robbie Tarrant and Jason Castagna have retired and Marlion Pickett will play on with a one-year deal, but the list of recent premiership retirees means the list changeover at Richmond might be limited this year.

The 2022 mid-season rookie draftee earned an AFL debut in Round 17 after consistently impressive VFL form.
Is expected to pen a two-year deal with the Tigers.
Verdict: Two-year deal
Kaelan Bradtke
Taken as a rookie, Kaelan Bradtke only joined the club in February.
Given Jack Riewoldt is entering his twilight, the Tigers need some youth pushing through under Tom Lynch in the key forward ranks.
Verdict: One-year deal
Seth Campbell
Another rookie draftee, selected in the 2022 draft.
Seth Campbell has been restricted by an adductor injury this year and should be given more opportunities.
Verdict: One-year deal
Mate Colina
The former college basketballer continues to nurse a back injury.
Mate Colina hasn’t had many chances to prove himself and he’s a project player who would cost little, so the Tigers might as well stick with him.
But just as easily, they could end the experiment and no harm would be done.
Verdict: Rookie list spot
Matt Coulthard
The 2023 mid-season draft selection will undoubtedly get another deal.
Matt Coulthard debuted in Round 19, impressing as a second-half sub in Richmond’s win against Hawthorn before getting minutes against Melbourne on the weekend.
Possesses speed and smarts which could go a long way at the elite level.
Verdict: One-year deal
Trent Cotchin
The three-time premiership captain is nearing the end.
Cotchin has been a superb player over 16 years but his form has dropped off in 2023, apart from a few games.
It all be a sad day but the time has come for ‘Cotch’ to hang them up.
Verdict: Retirement
Thomson Dow
The midfielder was drafted with pick 21 in 2019 but it hasn’t quite gone to plan.
Dow has played just 14 times at AFL level and it appears as though his fate is much the same as fellow former first-rounder Riley Collier-Dawkins who was delisted after four years and 11 games.
The 21-year-old Dow has played just once for the senior side in 2023 and it appears as though his future does not lie with the club.
Verdict: Delisted
Jack Graham
Looked around at Port Adelaide last year but opted to stay put.
The premiership midfielder has been solid in recent weeks after some indifferent form in the middle of the season.
The Tigers could quite easily extend Jack Graham beyond 2023, but they could also look at using him in a trade if they want to try and lure a key forward to Punt Road.
But the likelihood is that Graham will stay a Tiger.
Verdict: Extend or look to trade
Rhyan Mansell
Rhyan Mansell’s versatility surely lands him another deal for 2024.
He was effective as a pressure forward earlier in the campaign, while he set the scene with his ferocious attack on the ball off half-back against Melbourne last weekend.
The 23-year-old appears to be the type of player the Tigers would like to keep on their list.
Verdict: One or two-year deal
Kamdyn McIntosh
The two-time flag winner has played every game as a winger in 2023.
Now 29, Kamdyn McIntosh is one of the more experienced players at a club that could yet lose Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt to retirement.
McIntosh continues to play an important role and should go around again in 2024.
Verdict: One-year deal
Marlion Pickett
Another premiership player on Richmond’s list.
Marlion Pickett found himself in hot water with the law stemming from a burglary investigation back in Western Australia. The Tigers stuck by him through that and he has only missed one game this season.
Pickett has had some big moments in 2023 and should be kept on at least for one more year.
Verdict: One-year deal
Bigoa Nyuon
The key position player has been on the list for four seasons, playing once at AFL level in 2022.
Bigoa Nyuon has been a dependable defender in the VFL while also spending time in the ruck and up forward.
His athleticism, aerial ability and 197cm frame should be enough to warrant a short-term deal despite his lack of senior footy.
Verdict: One or two-year deal
Hugo Ralphsmith
Hugo Ralphsmith’s speed and dash has been used mainly off half-back or on the wing.
There is enough there to work with and after 32 senior games might just need some continuity at the top level.
The 21-year-old has AFL attributes and could be of interest to a rival club if the Tigers were looking to use him in a trade.
GWS were reportedly keen last year when the two clubs were negotiating about Jacob Hopper. The pull from Giants coach Adam Kingsley, who worked with Ralphsmith at the Tigers, could be real.
Verdict: Extend or trade
Jack Riewoldt
Similar to his premiership teammate Trent Cotchin, the end might have come for Jack Riewoldt.
He has played a selfless role in 2023 without Tom Lynch by his side, frequently copping the opposition’s number one defender and working tirelessly for the team.
After almost 350 games and more than 780 goals, Riewoldt will walk away as a modern day Tigers great.
Verdict: Retirement
James Trezise
The VFL product was added to the senior list via the 2023 mid-season draft.
He has impressed as a rebounding defender at the level below the AFL and should be given another shot on the list.
Verdict: One-year deal

n.b. The above article is incorrect. Graham, McIntosh and Pickett have already triggered one-year extensions until the end of 2024. So, they aren't out of contract.
-
Also HRS and Biggie should be cut
-
Does the journo realise Castagna's spot has already been filled by one of the MSD picks? ::)
Also HRS and Biggie should be cut
HRS has trade value and Biggy should be developed more as a ruck - think he'll be delisted though. Wouldn't be at all surprised if Cumberland requests a trade. :shh
-
It seems clear that the strategy at Richmond is/was that;
- we would use our draft picks, which were/are going to be bad ones due to recent success and trades (Taranto, Hopper) to select flankers and wingers.
- top up with good key position players from other clubs as free agents. Example is Lynch.
the problem with this is that you are going to pay very high prices for the ones you want. An example of this is Himmelburg who has signed a 5 year deal at $800K to stay at the Giants. Obviously this is a huge price for an older, some would say competent key. We would have to offer a premium to get him.
Further worryingly is that Himmelburg has now said he enjoys playing down back and we wanted him as a forward.
It is beginning to look like the decision to overlook the tall forwards in the mid-season draft for Coulthard and Trasize may have been another mistake.
-
We need to get back to the top 10 somehow and grab Nate Caddy. :shh
-
n.b. The above article is incorrect. Graham, McIntosh and Pickett have already triggered one-year extensions until the end of 2024. So, they aren't out of contract.
Mecca is another one we need to move on as for Graham he was tradeable last year nothing has changed.
-
Could we tempt McKay from North to come over and play as a CHF?
-
Adam Cooney's (yeah I know) assessment of our list:
* Core group going forward (Bolton, Baker, D.Rioli, Taranto, Hopper) is still decent but none are key position players.
* Need specialist wingers who win plenty of the ball (25 disposals). Ross was okay tonight but McIntosh, while he runs and works hard, doesn't win enough footy.
* Replacements for Riewoldt and Grimes.
(* and a new coach).
-
Ross does well for an a mid paced on baller stuck out on the wing. Put a Burger Ring on it is right though -we need blokes that are more naturally suited to the role not raggedy makeshift types. Preferably with some genuine pace as well. :shh
-
After the year well the last two yrs he has had id be tempted to tap Grimes on the shoulder.
Cotchin,Riewoldt, Tarrant and Castagna all likely gone.
Contracts aside there are ten you have to look seriously at delisting.
Miller, Nyuon, Colina, Mansell, MRJ, McIntosh, Ralphsmith, Green, Dow. Pickett there may not be a choice no one says it but he has a court case coming. His form has been woeful and he is 32.
Trade prospects for me are Soldo, Short, Graham not that we will get a lot for them but they may help us get back into the draft.
Last one is i think Cumberland will ask for a trade as well.
Thats getting close to half the list that needs replacing and does not include other older players nearing the end.
Imo who ever takes over has to be a list builder and the expectations on how long before we get back to flag contention has to change.
Its been three years since our last flag and we continue to kid ourselves that we are in a flag window.
-

If he'd included Balta and Gibcus in that core group (and why wouldn't you?), there would have been KPPs.

Every free agent — where is your club placed with its players

RICHMOND
Kamdyn McIntosh is technically a free agent, but has hit a games-based trigger so will be at Punt Rd in 2024.
Free agents Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt just joined Robbie Tarrant in retirement, so $1 million or more of cap space will be freed up, although much of it will be swallowed up when Shai Bolton’s seven-figure deal kicks in next year.
Bigoa Nyuon is also a free agent after being delisted and relisted. He has played only one AFL game but after strong VFL form as a ruckman and defender he will be confident of another contract.

ps. Out of contract:
Dow, Mansell, Ralphsmith.
Rookies: Bauer (expected to sign a two-year deal), Bradtke, Campbell, Colina*, Nyuon, Trezise.
We currently have 32 senior spots filled, 8 category A rookies and one category B* rookie.

Shopping list for me.
Two kpf - one mature one junior. Jack is gone and Bradtke while he has talent is a reach. prudent to think the worse in his case.
Two kpd - Tarrant retired Nyuon probably gone besides we have stopped playing him as a defender.
0ne possibly two Ruckman - Colina delist and we should look to trade Soldo imo. Would like a mature ruck and one to develop along Ryans lines.
Four mids - Terribly depleted in this area.
three wingers/Flankers - Would look at cutting all of McIntosh, Pickett, and Ralphsmith.
There are other list needs as well. Clearly we cannot do all of them in one go but with four retirements i hope we can at least turn over 9 players and start addressing some of the needs.

Your wish list 12 changes will not all happen this year. Will take at least two trade/draft periods to get it right.
Not sure why you have Colina in your hit list. He is a Cat B rookie and outside all main list management rules. If we cut him we don't have a position to fill unless we find someone else who qualifies as a Cat B
McIntosh will stay until we have some one else. Banks could be the one, which would put McIntosh up for trade at the end of his contract next year
The club will keep Pickett and get him to 100 games in 2024. You will see the benefit in 8 to 10 years when there are multiple Picketts running around in the senior boys and girls sides

Dear Santa Claws,
I would like to swap half our list with GWS and the other half with Gold Coast + Gawn, Bont, N.Daicos, C.Curnow and three picks inside the top 10.

I cant help but feel like the club has a few recruits up its sleeve.
I just hope we realise that its time to start cleaning out, not acquiring for an immediate crack at a flag.
We have so much exciting young talent to start building on, just need to keep acquiring the right pieces.
I want to see these guys moved on whether its via trade, delisting or retirement.
Pickett, Mcintosh, Grimes, Raplhsmith, Soldo, Colina, Broad.
Theres no way the club will get rid of all of them but for me we are ready to move on.

What we do in the trade & draft period will be a big indicator of the club's mentality. There is a slight whiff of overrating our list like we used to in the bad old days, hopefully the off -season will allay those fears but given match selections and some of the re-signings -not to mention references to 2016 from blokes like Jack, which may or may not be reflective of the club's general mindset - I'm not to sure.... :shh

I dont mind a small step down the ladder to come up quickly. Look at teams like Port, Magpies, they have a down year then rise quickly.
I am hoping a new coach gives some of the players the kick up the arse they need to lift fitness, skills and most importantly agression at the footy and tackling. This for me is where we have dropped off the most and it has shown.
Sometimes you dont mind losing as long as the players give a decent crack and go hard.

A survey sent to clubs last week put forward the possibility of a veterans list, which would allow clubs to have one veteran listed outside of the primary list.

Poor tackling/pressure & lack of speed are out two biggest issues. Skills the next biggest but those first two go a long way to improving everything else and can cover most deficiencies. :shh
Need to tighten our zone defence as well - way too generous. Like giving away easy runs in cricket because your fielders are too far back. Also go one on one and use a tagger when required. :shh :shh

Comments made by Benny Gale suggests some at the club still rate this list as not having to bottom out or collect high draft picks. You would think they have learned some lessons from the past years, but perhaps they have not.

Resting on our laurels...even with the glaring and recent cautionary tale of Hawthorn let alone our own past....thinking we can be like Geelong....yet we've already missed the finals twice in three years....:facepalm

We haven't won a final in 3 years. Prince Andrew has more chance of making a comeback to royal life than our current list has of making finals.

We need to be in the market for the fish other clubs throw away. A good example of this is Blake Acres at Carlton. What was it a 3rd rounder. Nick Newman another.
Given away for nothing like we did with Butler, Oleg & Higgins for whatever reason.
Be good to fill the boat with some of these types that other clubs dont want or can't afford.
We never seem to be in the market for these small fish but they do add good depth at times.
Sorry for the fishing analogies.

Loading up on opposition rejects is Frawley-Wallace era tomfoolery or that moneyball crap we did pre-17 and ended up with dreck like Thomas, Miller, Edwards, Hunt, Moore, Lonergan, Banfield and Hamspud. :shh

Every Richmond player’s contract status, future analysed
With legends out the door, Richmond is moving on to the next era and targeting one part of the ground to improve. Here is who could be part of the next finals run and who is in trouble.
Josh Barnes
HeraldSun
August 22, 2023
Richmond is looking forward, in more ways than one.
With four Tigers already retired – including legends Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt – the whiff of an era ended is in the air at Punt Rd.
But the Tigers have little interest in dropping down the ladder as they eye a Geelong-style float – remaining a finals contender and avoiding bottoming out at all costs.
That plan began last year by bringing in ex-Giants Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper to fill holes in the midfield, with Taranto an unqualified success so far.
Now the Tigers are looking to the next pieces of the puzzle.
“We just haven’t been able to win enough ball forward of centre this year, which has meant we spent most of the year defending,” Richmond CEO Brendon Gale told ABC radio.
“That’s not our profile, that’s not how we play.
“We need to find players who can win their own ball forward of centre and hit the scoreboard. Our midfield, I think bringing in Taranto and Hopper is that bridge to the next generation.”
Richmond is confident its backline is still solidly in place with highly-rated young tall Josh Gibcus to slot in at centre half-back next year after a hamstring worry ruined his 2023.
Noah Balta forecasts as a lock at stuff – unless the Tigers get tempted to throw him forward – and the likes of Daniel Rioli, Jayden Short, Nathan Broad and Nick Vlastuin are still near the top of their game.
Tylar Young has been a big find this year as a versatile tall back.
With Riewoldt gone and goalsneak Jason Castagna retired since summer and Tom Lynch missing most of this season, the Tigers need more winners up front.
Are those winners on the list?
Dustin Martin is one, but Noah Cumberland hasn’t come on.
The Tigers are still on the hunt.
“I don’t see the need to bottom out, I just think we can remain competitive and you take your opportunities when they come,” Gale said.
“That’s why I think Taranto and Hopper became so important, because the view was we brought them in so we are ‘chips in’.
“Clearly we brought them in to improve part of the ground that wasn’t working for us and that hasn’t worked out this year, but they are a bridge for us.”
As Richmond aims to walk that bridge from one era to the next, the club is hoping to appoint a new coach replacing Damien Hardwick before the grand final so the new boss can steer list management decisions.
Here is what that new coach will have on the list, who is in trouble of facing the axe and who is part of the future.
1. Nick Vlastuin
Age: 29
Games: 210 (2023 games: 20)
Contract ends: 2026
Vlastuin is still ranked elite by Champion Data for intercept possessions, rattling along at 8.4 per game this year. The half-back master has been a superb player for nearly a decade now and is still so reliable. He will into his 30s when his current contract ends and should still be an important player by then.
Status: Staying
2. Dylan Grimes
Age: 32
Games: 228 (2023 games: 21)
Contract ends: 2024
A noticeable drop-off has hit Grime this year, as his numbers dip across the board. Normally so reliable, the co-captain appears to have lost a step. He is likely to carry on next year, but does he hand back the captaincy badge?
Status: Likely staying
3. Dion Prestia
Age: 30
Games: 212 (2023 games: 20)
Contract ends: 2024
So often a barometer for the Tigers, Prestia has been so-so this year. His health has been great by his standards but his impact has been slightly down. Prestia will carry on next year and a lift from him would help the Tigers improve as a whole. Does another club put anything on the table to try and poach him? It’s doubtful he would net much of a return.
Status: Staying
4. Dustin Martin
Age: 32
Games: 288 (2023 games: 19)
Contract ends: 2024
The scuttlebutt never stops with Dusty. With Damien Hardwick set up on the Gold Coast, some pondered whether Martin would join his old coast up north in the sun. But Richmond has no interest in moving Dusty and he is within reach of joining some immortals in playing 300 games in the yellow and black. In his role as a forward-midfielder, Martin rates elite in several statistical categories and can still turn a game.
Status: Likely staying
5. Jack Ross
Age: 22
Games: 62 (2023 games: 18)
Contract ends: 2024
Ross has finally found some consistency after being placed on a wing this year. His numbers have ticked up across the board and Ross has enjoyed his best season. Contracted for next year, he should be locked in for the wing.
Status: Staying
6. Robbie Tarrant
Age: 34
Games: 194 (2023 games: 0)
Contract ends: Out-of-contract
The former North Melbourne defender pulled the plug midway through this season after an excellent career. A best-and-fairest winner at North Melbourne, Tarrant was in the top echelon of defenders in his prime and the gamble to have a go at Richmond was worthwhile given he played 20 games last year.
Status: Retired
7. Liam Baker
Age: 25
Games: 109 (2023 games: 22)
Contract ends: 2024
Richmond’s Mr Fix-It, some have touted Baker as the club’s next captain. Baker plays anywhere and everywhere and generally does it really well. A key part of Richmond’s plan to stay competitive, expect the club to work to lock him away early next year.
Status: Staying
8. Jack Riewoldt
Age: 34
Games: 347 (2023 games: 21)
Contract ends: Out-of-contract
The heroic forward played his final game on Saturday against North Melbourne, joining his great mate Trent Cotchin in retirement. Riewoldt will leave a big hole in the forward half even as he slowed down this year, as he managed to still cover reasonably well for the injured Tom Lynch. Now the Tigers must find a tall forward partner for Lynch. You will still see plenty of Jack next year as he steps into a media career.
Status: Retired
9. Trent Cotchin
Age: 33
Games: 306 (2023 games: 19)
Contract ends: Out-of-contract
Cotchin retired earlier this month as a true Richmond legend and the only Tiger to captain three premierships. He will step into media with a Channel 7 show for the finals series and is unsure where his next steps are.
Status: Retired
10. Maurice Rioli
Age: 20
Games: 26 (2023 games: 9)
Contract ends: 2024
Rioli caused headlines recently when he appeared to be upset to be subbed out of a win over West Coast. The Tigers wrapped their arms around him but Rioli has stagnated this year and averaged a meagre 6.8 disposals per game. He needs a big pre-season but has all the talent of an elite pressure forward.
Status: Staying
11. Jason Castagna
Age: 27
Games: 134 (2023 games: 0)
Contract ends: Out-of-contract
The triple-premiership forward didn’t play at all this year after deciding to retire over summer. His call allowed the Tigers to use his empty list spot at the mid-season draft.
Status: Retired
13. Hugo Ralphsmith
Age: 21
Games: 32 (2023 games: 13)
Contract ends: Out of contract
Ralphsmith has been in and out of the Richmond side this year and used as the sub in each of his past four games. That doesn’t bode well for his future, having played 32 games in three years.
Status: Going
14. Tim Taranto
Age: 25
Games: 136 (2023 games: 22)
Contract ends: 2029
A brilliant opening campaign from Taranto at Richmond and he should be a hot favourite to win the Jack Dyer Medal as the club’s best-and-fairest. The hard working midfielder has managed to win he ball in close and hit the scoreboard, a rare combination. He holds a huge contract after stepping over from GWS and if Taranto carries on his 2023 form, it will be unders on his output.
Status: Staying
15. Jayden Short
Age: 27
Games: 152 (2023 games: 15)
Contract ends: 2027
A hamstring injury pushed back plans for Short’s 150th game celebration but around the injuries he has been in typically strong form. Contracted for another four seasons, the running defender remains a key part of Richmond’s future.
Status: Staying
17. Daniel Rioli
Age: 26
Games: 159 (2023 games: 22)
Contract ends: 2027
Another good season off half-back for Rioli, who has been locked away long-term by the club. The speedster finished second in Richmond’s best-and-fairest last year and will be in the top 10 this year too, given his relentless run. Does he make the All-Australian squad of 40?
Status: Staying
19. Tom Lynch
Age: 30
Games: 216 (2023 games: 4)
Contract ends: 2025
Just four games this season, Lynch’s lowest tally in his career. After possibly having his finest campaign in 2022, the lost year will sting one of the league’s best forwards. The Tigers decided in mid-July to put Lynch on ice for the year. They need him to bounce back next season.
Status: Staying
.... Continues next post ....
-
20. Ivan Soldo
Age: 27
Games: 56 (2023 games: 7)
Contract ends: 2024
One of the Tigers with currency, it would make so much sense for Soldo to move. He is still behind Toby Nankervis in the pecking order and Samson Ryan has continued to show signs as a developing ruck. If Richmond is likely to drop down the ladder, Soldo’s best may pass before the Tigers bounce anyway. He was mooted in trade talks to GWS last year but it didn’t eventuate. Port Adelaide would be a good fit, while Sydney and Geelong are also after someone to claim the No.1 ruck spot.
Status: Likely going
21. Noah Balta
Age: 23
Games: 84 (2023 games: 22)
Contract ends: 2025
Signed up with Richmond last year until the end of 2025, Balta is one of the gun youngsters in yellow and black. He still makes errors and can be beaten from time to time, but Balta will be an All-Australian stuff one year if he continues to improve. Still only 23, Balta is a key for Richmond’s future. Was swung forward for much of round 22’s win over North Melbourne and booted two goals as an aerial presence, a move that is sure to be considered over summer.
Status: Staying
22. Jacob Hopper
Age: 26
Games: 129 (2023 games: 15)
Contract ends: 2029
Unlike Tim Taranto, Hopper has been only OK in his first year at Richmond. He hasn’t really helped address concerns in the midfield and would have liked to have a bigger impact. Still a solid player, Hopper is on a star’s contract so will want to lift.
Status: Staying
25. Toby Nankervis
Age: 29
Games: 135 (2023 games: 14)
Contract ends: 2024
The co-captain ticked off a trigger early in the year to stay with Richmond next season. Outside of an ugly incident that saw him suspended for a hit on Sydney’s Jake Lloyd, Nankervis’ form has still be very good in 2023. The question will be whether the Tigers flip around their captaincy structure next year and moves on from the Nankervis-Dylan Grimes duo.
Status: Staying
26. Matthew Coulthard
Age: 22
Games: 4 (2023 games: 4)
Contract ends: Out-of-contract
The exciting forward has speed to burn and has been given a chance by Andrew McQualter in the back half of the season. Has provided a real spark at times and has shown enough to prove he has a future in the game. The 22-year-old will ink an extension soon.
Status: Staying
27. Thomson Dow
Age: 21
Games 16 (2023 games: 3)
Contract ends: Out of contract
Dow saw his chance for a breakout campaign get swiped away by the arrivals of Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto. Richmond coaches still like the midfielder and he has good numbers in the VFL – averaging 22.8 disposals, 11.5 contested possessions and 6.3 clearances a game this year. Got a chance to run through the midfield in round 22 and gathered eight disposals in the first quarter before finishing with 21, and another 16 against the Kangaroos. The Tigers like him so he probably gets another year but after four years in the system it’s no lock.
Status: Likely staying
28. Josh Gibcus
Age: 20
Games: 18 (2023 games: 0)
Contract ends: 2025
Richmond thinks it has a generational centre half-back in Gibcus. But the youngster didn’t play at all this year due to hamstring injuries. The signs he showed in his first year have him as a potential A-grader and he seems like a good fit alongside Noah Balta as a defensive duo for years to come.
Status: Staying
29. Shai Bolton
Age: 24
Games: 112 (2023 games: 22)
Contract ends: 2028
Bolton will enjoy a hefty pay rise when his long-term extension kicks in next year and it will be well deserved. Still only 24, Bolton is a proven star and will be around for a long time to come. If he improves as a player, he might be a fulcrum to help Richmond avoid the slide.
Status: Staying
30. Tom Brown
Age: 20
Games: 0 (2023 games: 0)
Contract ends: 2025
Where is Brown at? The Tigers rate him highly enough to have extended him for the next two seasons but he is yet to play in the AFL. Highly rated as a junior, Brown had wrist surgery that cut out the first half of his season before he returned in the VFL, where he has averaged 18.9 disposals in state league appearances. Capable of playing through the midfield, Brown has mainly been run off half-back and had 16 intercept possessions in two games across rounds 20 and 21 in the VFL, showing he is learning the position.
Status: Staying
31. Rhyan Mansell
Age: 23
Games: 31 (2023 games: 16)
Contract ends: Out-of-contract
Has played for the majority of the year but remains without a contract for next season. Mansell does his job but has averaged just 8.1 disposals a game this season. Could be a line ball call if he carries on.
Status: In the air
32. Samson Ryan
Age: 22
Games: 15 (2023 games: 14)
Contract ends: 2024
The big man is steadily developing and has played 14 games this year, providing good back-up assistance in the ruck. The Tigers can be confident he is capable of being a bona fide second ruck, which could open the door to moving Ivan Soldo. Ryan is still raw but the building blocks are there.
Status: Staying
33. Kamdyn McIntosh
Age: 29
Games: 168 (2023 games: 22)
Contract ends: Out of contract (trigger)
McIntosh said in May: “I want to be a one-club man and a Tiger for life” and a games-based contract trigger should see him carry on in 2024. A heart and soul type player, he is still reliable on the wing and is a master at halving difficult contests. One of six player to feature in all 22 games so far this year for the Tigers, he has enough juice left to go on but would a club pushing for finals eye cheap running cover? Wingers are like gold and Gold Coast, Fremantle and Essendon are always on the lookout for outside run.
Status: Likely staying
34. Jack Graham
Age: 25
Games: 116 (2023 games: 19)
Contract ends: Out of contract (trigger)
Graham was caught touring Port Adelaide last year before the Power pulled out of talks around a possible move as the Jason Horne-Francis deal emerged. The hard-running midfielder is likely to stick around, with a one-year contract trigger to push him through to free agency next year. Graham is exactly the player Richmond needs, a reliable, mid-career player that can help be a bridge between eras.
Status: Likely staying
35. Nathan Broad
Age: 30
Games: 125 (2023 games: 18)
Contract ends: 2025
The veteran defender inked an extension in May to stick around at Richmond until the end of 2025. Other clubs were lining up for the adaptable defender, who can play tall or small and is one of the best running backmen in the game.
Status: Staying
36. James Trezise
Age: 21
Games: 0 (2023 games: 0)
Contract ends: Out of contract
Drafted from the Richmond VFL side mid-season, Trezise has had some strong performances across half-back at the second level. He had 12 intercept possessions against Geelong in round 8, 13 against Sydney in round 16 and 11 against Southport in round 17. The defender has kept up his performances since being drafted so should earn another crack at it and is poised to re-sign.
Status: Staying
37. Kaelan Bradtke
Age: 22
Games: 0 (2023 games: 0)
Contract ends: Out-of-contract
Bradtke was picked over Quinton Narkle in the summer and a broken hand smashed his early season. He is a proven goalkicker, though, bagging 23 majors in 14 VFL games this year, so is worth giving a go again in 2024.
Status: Likely staying
38. Noah Cumberland
Age: 22
Games: 18 (2023 games: 9)
Contract ends: 2024
One of a few Tigers to slide this year, Cumberland burst on the scene last season, booting 19 goals in nine games to look like a future half-forward gun. He has battled this season, kicking eight goals in nine games and spending plenty of time in the VFL. Cumberland has averaged 2.8 goals per game in the seconds this year, so he has proven he has forward traits. Does the Queenslander entertain offers? Gold Coast could ask, while young teams like North Melbourne, Essendon or Hawthorn could use a young forward.
Status: Likely staying
39. Mate Colina
Age: 24
Games: 0 (2023 games: 0)
Contract ends: Out of contract
The giant ruck didn’t play a game at all this season due to a back injury. He only played seven games in 2022, averaging 4.9 disposals and 5.4 hitouts in seven VFL matches. It’s possible he gets another crack given the injury, but it seems unlikely.
Status: Going
40. Tyler Sonsie
Age: 20
Games: 10 (2023 games: 3)
Contract ends: 2025
The youngster has largely plied his trade in the twos this year, where he has averaged 24.5 disposals and 5.7 score involvements a game. Signed an extension last year so he will carry on with the Tigers.
Status: Staying
41. Sam Banks
Age: 20
Games: 5 (2023 games: 5)
Contract ends: 2025
Broke into the AFL side to play a handful of games late in the season, and Banks looks good as a hard-running half-back option. Could push onto the wing in coming years and will play more footy in 2024.
Status: Staying
42. Judson Clarke
Age: 19
Games: 16 (2023 games: 13)
Contract ends: 2025
After signing on late last year until the end of 2025, Clarke played 13 games this year before going down with a nasty shoulder injury that required surgery. The Tigers have been rapt with his progress so far and see him as a long-term midfielder.
Status: Staying
43. Jacob Bauer
Age: 21
Games: 3 (2023 games: 3)
Contract ends: Out of contract
Expect Bauer to sign up for another couple of years after breaking into the team late this year. Famously kicked the winning goal after the siren twice in the VFL and then did his hamstring just minutes into his AFL debut, but bounced back to earn his way into the Richmond team.
Status: Staying
44. Seth Campbell
Age: 18
Games: 0
Contract ends: Out of contract
Just four VFL games this season after an adductor injury limited the rookie. He has had fewer than 10 disposals in three of those games. Not numbers that demand another year, but given his age and the injury, the Tigers may give him another go.
Status: In the air
45. Tylar Young
Age: 24
Games: 18 (2023 games: 18)
Contract ends: 2025
Possibly the find of the season for the Tigers, Young is nearly impossible to beat in defensive contests and reads like an easy replacement for Dylan Grimes when the co-captain steps away. A huge success story from the Richmond VFL side.
Status: Staying
46. Ben Miller
Age: 23
Games: 25 (2023 games: 13)
Contract ends: 2024
A slow burn after being drafted back in 2017, Miller played in the elimination final last year but has still be in and out of the side in 2023, playing as a key forward or ruck. Still some development to come, so 2024 projects to be a big year for Miller.
Status: Staying
47. Bigoa Nyuon
Age: 22
Games: 1 (2023 games: 0)
Contract ends: Out of contract
Universally known as ‘Biggie’, Nyuon made his debut last year but hasn’t returned to the AFL. After signing a one-year deal late last year, he could be in trouble. Capable as a ruck or defender, he took nine intercept marks across his first two VFL games this year but has been up and down since.
Status: In the air
48. Steely Green
Age: 19
Games: 0
Contract ends: 2024
Green has averaged just 10.4 disposals per game through 16 VFL matches as he begins his development. Appears a long way off the AFL level in his first year in the system.
Status: Staying
49. Kaleb Smith
Age: 18
Games: 0
Contract ends: 2024
A foot injury has kept Smith sidelined all year and he was moved to the inactive list in May. Capable of playing at either end or through the midfield, the impressive athlete will hope for better luck next year.
Status: Staying
50. Marlion Pickett
Age: 31
Games: 78 (2023 games: 21)
Contract ends: 2024
Made headlines this year when he was tangled up in legal issues in West Australia. On field he has been solid, alternating between a role on the wing and as a pseudo tall forward. Pickett ticked off a trigger to give him a contract next year. As long as he is right to play outside of his off-field issues, Pickett will be back next year.

Decent research and work in that article. Don't agree with it all but fair amount of work.
-
Hickey and Ceglar retirements increase Soldo's trade value IMO.
-
If we had any brains we would make a play for McRae from the pies.
What would he cost us given he hasn't played a game in a few years.? Give them HRS or Soldo.
Great size about him and we need mids.
-
Reminds of when people were saying we should grab Brayden Sier. :shh
But hey, as long as he brings his uncle Craig over with him then I'm on board. :clapping
-
Sier was average i thought, but i think this guy can play and for soldo and HRS i would give them both.
If Fly is his uncle though there is no chance he is going anywhere.
-
Yeah they're not related - different spelling - he's actually the brother of Jack Macrae from the Dogs.... :shh
-
Doesnt have the guts to say it with only two gone Colina and Ralphsmith outside of the 4 retirees.
Then he names three mansell Nyuon Campbell in the air, and another 6 Soldo Dow, McIntosh, Graham Bradtke Cumberland likely staying but could go.
That to me says he thinks the 15 are gone or could be considered for the chop/trade.
No wonder Hardwick jumped ship midstream. While we continue to kid ourselves about where we are at he moves to a club who has already done a lot of the hard work.
Take the pee if you like i don't give a crap.Over the next two or three seasons the rest of the champs will go along with probably half the list
Leaving over rated average players to try to pick up the pieces because outside of a few there is not a lot of proven top end quality there.
-
Shopping list for me.
I only named 12 list deficiencies and did say Clearly we cannot do them all at once.
If we are not aiming at losing the 4 retirees and trading/delisting 5 others then we are drinking the bath water.
Colina cmon he has played just 7 vfl games in god knows how many seasons is already 24 and comes from basketball. He is a list clogger and most likely a dud despite his size. With how well run we are and with all the resources surely we can find a cat b replacement we can get on the park and at least try to develop.
Of course McIntosh will stay that doesnt mean he should. Should have been cut years ago. No one literally no one would trade for McIntosh.
Lol Pickett Based on his on and off field behavior and form he should be one of the first cut with him being 32 next year. That rings even more true if we cannot even play him in a role he at least can perform in.

... and a Partridge in a pear tree!
All together now ... :lol
Ho Ho Ho At least i have the guts to say what areas of list i think are lacking.
You well spinless pricks who say little but take cheap shots will always be spineless.
Cmon instead of the constant cheap shots at least put up a counter argument i for one would like to hear what list deficiencies we have FROM YOU.
Obviously you think key fwds and with two kpd's in the gun and the plethora of mids we have banging the door down we don't need any of them.

RFC list management: WHERE DO WE SIGN!?

Yep its what we do. We don't address needs but we do take types who will likely give us something, anything.

$100.00 Dollar question. How do we get back into the early part of the first round of the draft.
I can only see one way and that is target clubs who need picks for acadamy players.
Be proactive and get a third for Ralphsmith, A late second or most likely a third for M Rioli. Dow would fetch a third rounder and i reckon a club would take a punt on Cumberland for a late second rounder. Bundle up the picks and send em to say gold coast for their first rounder who need picks for for their acadamy players.
It would not be the first time bundling picks has been done in deals.
All it takes is an honest assesment of players and a willingness to get back into the 1st round.

All that effort and we pick up a 180 cm 65kg left footer
Pass for me and stick with those 3 you want to trade.

Interesting huh?
Makes you wonder if it's not about football ability.

Trimming the fat - literally. :shh

They had to cut KB, apart from game one he didnt show anything to suggest he could make it.
For someone with so called athletism, he could barely jump off the ground.
Good early call.
-
Interesting with this and the new Category B rookie signing that they haven't waited for the new coach - indication Mini already has the job perhaps? Hope not. :shh

Should be able to play at 105 you'd think.

Dow and Mansell locked for 2024.

Richmond's Contract Hold-ups
Out-of-contract: Jacob Bauer, Mate Colina, Thomson Dow, Bigoa Nyuon (UFA), Rhyan Mansell, Hugo Ralphsmith
Retired: Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt, Jason Castagna, Robbie Tarrant
Delisted: Kaelan Bradtke
The Tigers dropped summer signing Bradtke and with four retirees, don’t have to make too many more changes unless they want to chop deep. Dow hasn’t played more than six games in any of his four seasons but is highly rated internally and finished the year strongly enough to get a new deal. Nyuon is one of many players left waiting as the Tigers weigh up whether to keep the athletic tall on the books after four seasons.

Keep Bauer.
Dow keep or trade.
The rest trade or delist.
-
Mansell should be traded or delisted but he won't be, Dow's probably earnt himself another a year but don't take that as any kind of ringing endorsement. Keep Bauer. Keep Biggy but only if we plan to to give him more ruck time. Delist Colina. Just pee off Ralphshyte don't care how. :shh

Those now remaining out of contract:
Dow, Mansell, Ralphsmith.
Rookies: Bauer*, Biggie, Colina.

The hardest part of doing that deal would be trying not laugh in front of the other club's list manager... :shh
-
Jon Ralph last night on Fox Footy threw out Lynch's name again to Melbourne for pick 5. Said Richmond aren't going to win a premiership in the next 3-4 years. Richmond says we get an A-grader in like they did with Dusty, Cotch and all those elite picks.
Jay Clark said that's mad as Lynch is Richmond's best player.
Ralph said the last thing you want to do as Richmond coach is be stuck in the doom loop of 8th-9th-10th finishes for the next 5 years. Richmond needs to take a significant step back and every Richmond fan would cop it after 3 flags in 4 years.
Landsberger chipped in and asked Ralph if he thinks the Tigers are about to fall off the cliff?
Ralph reiterated he thinks the Tigers need to take a significant step back. They need to find ways to gets multiple picks in. How did they win the last premiership(s)?
Clark said Taranto and Hopper wouldn't sign off on that deal that gets rid of their best player and next captain potentially.
Ralph replied he wouldn't be asking them if he was coach. You're here for 7 years. Hopper, you start getting the nurry and Taranto, you've been fantastic but try and find a way to improve your kicking efficiency.
Landsberger said he would love to know if Yze or McQualter has gone into their job interview and said "I want the job, but I want to trade the best player and put this club through five years of misery. Sign me up!" That would be a fascinating interview.
Ralph replied fair enough, but if any of them have said I can win a premiership with this list then they are kidding themselves. And they don't need to as Richmond have just won three. Geelong fantastic, they stayed up, but they had Dangerfield, Selwood, Hawkins and they got Jeremy Cameron in. It's all very well to say you can do it, but Geelong were the massive outlier from anyone from the past 20 years.
Lauren Wood said it's easy to say get pick 5 and you add Nick Watson to Taranto and Hopper to win the ball. But then what? Who do they kick to?
Jay Clark said Richmond are looking out for a forward rather than giving one up.
Landsberger said Samson Ryan better be Paul Salmon if Lynch were to be traded.

Where were all these master trades when the club went out and blew a top pick on hopper? :shh
Ralph's stfu that's what they should have said to him.
-
If pick 5 is on the table and Lynch is amenable I would consider it for sure.
We replace a $1.2mil player with a $105k draftee so can afford to pay some Lynch salary to get #5.
Would hate to see him playing for someone else but we need to look to the future and he's right - can't see us winning a flag for a few years unless we can acquire some good forwards with our empty draft hand and surely the cap is already tight as it is.
-
The Geelong and to some extent Sydney examples have blinded everybody into thinking you can contend for 20 years without having to go backwards but both clubs are outliers with advantages and mitigating factors other clubs just don't have. :shh
-
Welcome to the AFL ... where the greatest mis-management involves refusing to dismantle your premiership winning machine & bottom out* (unless you are Sydney or Geelong). :-\
* bottom out but whatever you do, don't tank (unless you are Sydney or Geelong). :P
-
I just don’t see how it’s possible to get a premiership list together ( that competes for a number of years not just 1 or 2 ) without hitting the draft and getting top picks. Every single premiership team has done that. You also need these players to grow and learn together so you want to get a bunch all in a few years.
-
It's all contrived bullshyte - the salary cap is the only "equalisation" we need. Just make every club pay 100% of the cap The draft is exciting when your club has a good hand and can lift spirits after a crap season (unless you trade away your picks like we did) but in reality it's just another load of imported Seppo bollocks created to provide media content and reward mediocrity. Hope the AFLPA does challenge it in court one day and they pee it off -you'd still have trading but it would only be players for players. :shh

Reckon one who i do like but would like to see delisted is Pickett.
Imo, coming off two ordinary seasons never a huge possesion getter and he is playing roles Wing and Forward that we have kids who need to be played. Also 32 and still has a law case hanging over his head.
If im honest i would rather see Banks Brown Broad Clarke and Smith get a run across wing or hb. Prefer we give all of them a go in front of Pickett McIntosh and Ross on a wing.
Certainly would persevere with all of Clarke MRJ, Coulthard and Cumberland in front of him as a forward.
In a sentence, playing him or McIntosh means we are not playing kids who should now be able to perform the roles.
-
Pickett will get to 100 games for F/S. With the pedigree of his family it'd be mental not to do this.
-
Pickett will get to 100 games for F/S. With the pedigree of his family it'd be mental not to do this.
Getting Pickett to 100 games at any cost is more mental. Based on his year this year he should be delisted.
-
See how he goes under the new coach but I have my doubts he’d get to 100 considering he needs 22 games to get there.
-
Marlion had a very good start to the year many forget this. He fell away mid year which is likely when the legal issues arose as he knew prior to WA trip he was going to be questioned next visit.
I'd be getting him to 100. He has 3 sons. Odds are 1 will be AFL standard. I think it'll be worth it.
-
Playing a bloke out of position to sacrifice his own game , as a defensive forward and bitchin when he doesn’t get 30 possessions and want to delist when he triggered A 12 month extension is WOW, so funny🤡
-
See how he goes under the new coach but I have my doubts he’d get to 100 considering he needs 22 games to get there.
Forget the new coach
I think there's a more pressing issue he faces before the season starts

I've been very vocal on the Lynch for pick 4/5 what ever it ends up being.
He's 31 in a few weeks.
He's body isn't reliable.
Dee's just need him to be fit for the 2nd half of the year and they win the flag on my honest opinion.
He is worth more than pick 4 to the Dee's, without question.
We traded our best player in 2016 in Brett Deledio and survived. Won handsomely out of that deal too.
We should have played finals this year in all honesty, and did that without Lynch. Give us replacements for Tarrant, Cotchin and Jack as well as a fit Gibcus. I don't think losing Lynch will turn us into bottom 4 side.
Give us pick 4 and ends up being a Sheezal or Nick Daicos and we win enormously out of the trade. I actually think it's a no brainer.
-
Not a fan of trading out our best players, gotta keep them or we'll put ourselves over the cliff & end up like Norf.
-
We must keep HRS…… to give a target to all posters. :lol :lol

Adsolutely NOT true.
We lose Jack and Trent this year - that's over $1 mill at least. (they would be on reduced not insulting money this year, especially Jack)
We lose Dusty, Prestia and Grimes next year - that's $2 mill (even if we keep Dusty you would expect a reduction)
We lose Lynch and a few others the year after - that's about $1.5 mill
As regards the poor draft, I agree, but we may have players to swap like Soldo, Graham, McIntosh.

Those 3 blokes at the end of your post have virtually no currency.
Also there's surely no way Jack and Cotch were pulling $1mil between them this year.
$600-700k absolute maximum.

Can’t wait for Aden to do his thang, very exciting for RFC

Yep. Pretty sure it was mentioned that Cotch and Jack played for a decreased salary this year so we could fit in both Taranto and Hopper. Our salary cap won't be freed up until the end of next year when Dusty and Lynch's long-term deals come to an end.

Considering that the average wage for an AFL player is $400k.
In your opinion Trent and Jack were paid less than the majority of ALL players. $600/2 = $300 each
Trent and Jack would have been paid at least $500K each.
Sure they may well have taken a cut but it was probably only around $300K each.
Lynch is contracted till 2025.

Thanks for the correction, RT. Yes, by 2025 not 2024.
I did see/read somewhere late last year that Jack and Cotch each were on around the $300-something thousand this year. They were willing to do it in their final year to bring in Taranto and Hopper into our midfield for one last attempt at another flag. Problem was in hindsight everything that worked well in 2022 fell apart this year and it was all a pipedream in the end :(.
-
Problem with your memory about the $300k is that you probably read it on here, as did I, and that's certainly no claim to truth.
Most supporters have no idea of the value or complexity of AFL contracts.
When they publish the new full CBA for the players I recommend you read it.
I read one a few years ago and the detail and compexity of conditions was mind boggling.
The emergence of social media over the last few years has also added conditions which basically double the detail.

Average is $400k but all draftees are on a smidge over 100k with clauses for bonuses etc.
Most lists have a dozen blokes on minimum coin.
There's no way Jack and Cotch were playing for more than about 350ea they have said it publicly (Jack anyway) they were only in it for one last crack at a flag if Taranto and Hopper could get them there.
So yes I think they were paid below average and happy to do it given they'd been paid upwards of 700-800k for a decade or more.
-
Seeing GWS last night after they traded out Taranto and Hopper for currency which helped turn into Cadman who obviously didn't play.
The idea of trading away your best player 100% makes you worse isn't always the case. 2017 Brett Deledio trade case and point.
With Tasmania coming through, I honestly think trading Lynch for a first rounder is an absolute must do. Kosi coming in and with Ryan another year developed we will be fine.
The other way of looking at it. With his injury record he's likely to play 50-70% of games for the rest of his career. 4 seasons absolutely max that's looking at about 50-60 games. If we are competing for a premiership a Pick 4 is worth more than 50 games from Tom.
Can't not love Tom, but this type of decision can be the difference between getting back to the top in a couple of years or end up like St.Kilda and Essendon and spend a decade with average players on the list.
-
The idea of trading away your best player 100% makes you worse isn't always the case. 2017 Brett Deledio trade case and point.
IMHO Brett Deledio was not our best player in 2016. Certainly in our top 5 but definitely not our best
I've always believed and have posted it. We would not have won the 2017 premiership if Deledio had stayed.
Finally there is a massive difference between Lynch and Deledio and that is Brett couldn't wait to get out of the place. He's said as much this year in his commentary job on the ABC.
Lynch doesn't want to leave and knows he owes the Club
As it stands we need him as our key forward while we develop any young player that comes through the doors. Throw in that he is also a leader which is another area we are struggling in and it is clear no brained for me he stays
But of I see him at the AFLW today I'll make sure I pass on your idea ;D
-
With lynch I’m thinking once we clean out our fitness staff we might fix lynch’s injury woes. I look at someone like Daniher who was injury ridden at Essendon then has been able to line up most weeks at Brisbane
-

Most of Danihers "injuries" at the bummers were between his ears imo.

Absolutely agree re: Lynch. He had a lot of ability but was clearly never a great leader or contributor to our culture - unlike Grigg who was universally recognised within the club as being a great bloke and friend.
Lids also was injury-riddled with calf problems and GWS got only modest amounts of game time out of him.

He simply didn't want to play for the drug cheats.
Played a few games every year to remind everyone of his ability and then just took his massive paycheck while relaxing.

Unless it Jaw dropping deal and even then why trade a the only real key forward at your club
On another note I notice Collingwood have lost one of their 1st picked key forwards and have another 3 to pick from, and we had a wingman as the replacement , terrible planning by us
-

Because we are looking at potentially years in the wilderness.
He's ageing but has currency for clubs in contention.
We need to improve our draft hand.
Having him win us games when we aren't contending will hurt our draft hand.
-
I’m of the opinion that team building is not exclusively about the draft . It’s a combination of many things , yes drafting but just as important recruiting, coaching , and the management and admin support behind those coaches . As on the playing field it’s a team effort by all parts of the club
-
Clubs who sell off their senior players lose leadership and mentors , we don’t have a lot and less with Cotch and Jacks retirements
Better option to trade up than Lynch
If you know anyone within the club they would be having a chuckle at the suggestion of trading Lynch
-

Think the key words are "potentially years". I disagree with that. I think that our list isn't as bad as what people are making it out to be. Yes there are gaps but there is also a lot of unknowns. We have kids we haven't seen much of, so we don't know how good or possibly not they are.
Also think people need to cool their collective jets a bit, we don't know what we've got planned for trade week. Who's up for trade etc.... from all reports this year's draft pool isn't the strongest but next year's is...
-
I’ve always been stubborn and vocal about creating a culture and a reputation for treating your legends well. If lynch wants to potentially pinch one more flag sure he has our blessing. But I wouldn’t off load him given how instrumental he’s been to 2019/20 flags. Same applies for dusty and prestia

100% correct. Get rid of all the experience too quick and you lose your ability to evolve.
People need to seriously think about it. Tom Lynch is the only capable EXPERIENCED kpf we have. He is the one who will now have to protect teach and inspire any future young kpf we manage to get.
Looks like we will be getting Koschitzke are we seriously going to ask him to lead our fwd line. Nope we are going to make it a hell of alot easier for him to develop play well and learn the craft with Lynch there, that goes for any other young tall fwd we play.
People mention Ryan coming thru and i have to ask seriously. He is a ruckman and hopefully over the next 2 or 3 seasons he can develop into our #1 ruck.
Bauer shows signs as a tall fwd but he could well end up doing the Grimes role when he retires. I still think Bauer a third tall rather than a kpp no matter what end of the ground he plays.
When you look at it objectively even with Koschitzke the cupboard while not bare is is wide open to conjecture.
If we are to get rid of older players and we do need to make no mistake we do it with the likes of 32 year old Pickett who lets face if we play him in his current roles he will be keeping and stopping kids that are ready from getting games.
Everyone talks about evolving and to a lesser degree succession planning but to me succession planning is the right way to evolve.
-

Okay lets say we a deal for a top 5 pick that pick may be ready to go straight away if its a mid but not if its a kpp. any kid we take will most likely take 3 or so yers to really hit their straps.
Wilderness yes but at some point we have to accept we will spend time near the bottom. How well we do while there will determine how long it takes to get back into contention.

Claw I just wonder what you think of this:-
We trade in Koschitzke for maybe Ralphsmith.
We trade out Soldo and Graham for Marshall and Lord.
I think Ralphsmith would add a bit of midfield pace that the Hawks seem to lack atm.
While Soldo is probably worth less than Marshall, I would say Graham is more valuable than Lord.
While Soldo is 27, he was a late starter and is only in his 5th year of seniors with a premiership in 2019. I actually think Soldo is a better ruck than Nank judging on this year but we cant trade out our captain and Ivan and Port seem interested in each other.
While Graham is 25, he has two premierships (2017, 20) and was 2nd in our 2021 B&F. This year was very poor from Jack but going back to SA might well ignite him to get fitter. I think he would, at his best, add a bit of hardness to Port's midfield replacing Boak.
The whole point of trades is to give up what you have in abundance to get what you lack.
We have probably too many rucks and small mids but we lack tall forwards.
Win - win for both clubs I think.
The main problem with this is I doubt Port would trade out TWO key forwards.

Port are desperate for a ruck and Sweet aint it.
They would give up Lord (and a pick) and maybe Marshall.
As has been said here Graham wants to go back to SA and was burned by Port last year when they switched to Horne-Francis so maybe the Crows want to deal. What do they have as a key forward?

The thing about Marshall is that while he is from Deni, he played with the Murray Bushies in his junior years.
He may want to come back to play footy in Victoria after his contract ends in a year or so.
If he has those ideas in his head then it may well be better for Port to let him go early and get a better deal than as a free agent at the end of his contract.
As I said I don't think its possible but if you don't ask you won't know.

Hmm Port do it different to us when it comes to talls most clubs do.
Their future set up would be Marshall, Lord and Georgiades.
They will not be trading any of them unless one of them wants out and why would they. Dixon is getting on and all three are better options than Finlayson imo.
So they have Dixon who may have another season or two in him, Finlayson who was a stop gap imo while the first three develop and last they have a kid i like in Scully also developing. All are genuine forwards.
Maybe we need to take a leaf out of their book and just draft more genuine tall forwards as its going to take awhile before we really challenge again.

Honestly I feel like we should take a key forward and defender every single year either by ND or rookie or MSD etc.
Some of the late picks come good eg Mitch Lewis P76 and Larkey P73. They take a while so you may as well have a punt with your 3-4th pick anyway.

Richmond will secure Ralphsmith on a new deal but will have to delist project ruckman Mate Colina after three years as a Category B rookie then re-rookie him.
Uncontracted athletic tall Bigoa Nyuon will have to wait until post trade-period to be informed whether he has a new deal.

Ridiculous that HRS gets another deal

Ridiculous that HRS gets another deal
It's comical. Hartley & Livingston clearly past their use by dates. :shh
-
Laughable.
Biggie, Colina, Ralph should all be delisted a combined 11 years on the list what do we have to show for it? 20 odd games?
-
With Hugo it depends on the terms and $ on offer from Richmond, and if there are other clubs in the picture
Koschitzke has an offer from Hawthorn but is still wanting to go to Richmond
So has Hugo signed yet??
-
Hugo would be the first delisted he's had so many chances and Biggie the same should be gone.

Full 4 years on the list so far. Really should know by now if they're worth persisting with.
I'm not convinced myself.

Your absolutely right.
It goes like this 18 to 21 or thereabouts juniors . So thats 3 to 4 seasons to make the simple call of have they shown enough to be further developed.
Fair enough all clubs get a few wrong and some players stay on lists too long because they see something in the player.
The question that should be asked all the time and should be be asked about poos his pants Ralphsmith is what has he done to warrant keeping after junior development.
The real answer is he has done sweet stuff all.
Cmon guys here we have an outside running player so ask what are the needed attributes for the role. Do the exercise and there is only one conclusion.
-
Only rookies Biggie (linked to Norf) and Colina are now out of contract.
If both leave and Koschitzke is traded in, then we will have 33 senior listers, 6 cat.A rookies and 1 cat.B rookie before the drafts. I think that will give us 3 spots to fill between the National and Rookie drafts with the extra cat.B spot vacant.

Lyon: “There’s no real way of seeing that they’ve improved their list.”
Cornes: “I wonder whether they could have cut deeper and it would have been bold to do that and a move off course and a detour of what they would’ve been planning 12 months ago. Should they have looked at Tom Lynch on the trade table or Jack Graham or a Dion Prestia and cut a little bit deeper and try to fast track where this is going?”
Lyon: “Glass half full, Adem Yze gets a crack at this list after it lost a bit of spark. That’s what the Tiger faithful will be hoping.”

As much as i dislike both these journo's they have come to the most obvious conclusion possible. We simply have not improved the list
and the oldies are a year older.
One player in in Koschitzke for an aging JR and Koschitzke could not hold a candle to Jack.
At least we bought in a tall but our worst list needs got worse rather than better.

I wonder if cornhole did a review of how his beloved Port did.
Well if im not wrong they have pick 73 in the nd. Yep thats it pick 73 unbelievable.
They bought in 4 UNDERWHELMING players. And ended up with just pick 73 .
Those 4 players have not done a lot to date so it will be interesting to see if they can get improvement out of them.
It seems with their trading they just dont have a lot of faith in their kids or don't think they are ready.

Also no 1st rounder next yr. sound familiar? In his own words this yr they are all in & have sold their future draft picks, yet watch the narrative change completely. We on the other hand have 6 picks within 4 rounds. A Draft warchest
-
We currently have 33 senior listed players, 5 category A rookies and 2 category B rookies.
If I've got this right and we only use two picks in the national draft (giving us 35 senior listers), then that will leave two category A rookie spots open. I'm guessing one picked up in the rookie draft and the other spot left open for the pre-season supplemental selection. If Gibcus goes on the LTIL then that would open up another rookie spot but more likely used in the mid-season draft.
-
Hmm the list what is the make up as far as all the types go.
Start with the defenders.
Key defenders
Balta 194/100 24y/85g
Gibcus 197/?? 21y/18g
Young 196/97 25y/19g. Young so far for me anyway is too one dimensional.
Miller 195/95 24Y/25g. Need to get another into the system with the Miller situation.
Tall Defender
Grimes 193/90 32y/229g. Really in decline we really should have had his replacement in the system developing the last few seasons or more..
Broad 192/89 30y/126g. Like Grimes he could be classified as a medium as they both play smaller than they are well.
Bauer 192/86 21y/4y. Put Bauer here because we need a replacement for both the aging Grimes and Broad. Better in the air than both and i think a better kick. Moves well enough to play on smaller opponents.
Medium defender
Vlastuin 187/87 29y/211g. will be 30 in april.
Brown 187/?? 20Y/1g
Trezise 188/?? 21y/1g
HRS 186/?? 22Y/32g.. Serious doubts about this bloke.
Banks 187/?? 21y/6g. Developing nicely on a wing but his pedigree is as a defender so named him here also.
Small Defender
Short 177/?? 28y/153g
Rioli 179/79 29y/160g. Imo we need pace and delivery on the wings and Rioli would provide both allowing kids to play across hb.
Smith 180/?? 19y/0g
Mansell 182/?? 22y/32g. Played one very average season as a fwd. He is a defender and an average one at that.
Baker 173/72 26y/110g.Needs to play as a mid to allow smith Brown and the likes of Bauer to play in the back half.
My prefered Backline given all are fit.
FB: Vlastuin - Balta - Bauer
HB: Brown - Gibcus - Broad
C: Rioli - Taranto - Banks.

How on earth do players like Mansell Rioli, Clarke, Sonsie, Coulthard Cambell and Graham get listed as mediums
How is Banks listed as a defender when all we have done is play him on a wing. Why arent Sonsie, Campbell and Martin listed as mid/fwds.
Looking at that you would think we have plenty of fwds when the opposite is the case.
There is also a critical lack of mids even if you names everyone who could possibly play there.

Hmm mids including wings and rucks.
Tall Wing
McIntosh 191/92 30y/168g. How the hell he keeps getting games is beyond belief.
Medium wings
Ross 187/86 23y/63g Laughable that we play this slow plodder on a wing. I suupose they play him where they can get something anything out of him to the detriment of the team.
Pickett 184/84 32y/78g 32 yo and id say theres a good chance he will be doing porridge. Rather we give banks a game on the wing.
Banks 187/?? 21y/6g Has not done a hell of a lot but showed enough good signs to suggest we have to persevere. Most important ball use and good pace is needed in the mid field.
Small wing
Rioli 179/79 26y/160g If he can run off hb he can certainly run on a wing. Pace an ability to run lines and good ball use all things needed on the wings that we lack.
Rioli .
Brown, Smith, Short and Ralphsmith all players we can try here or across hb.
Rucks
Nankervis 199/102 29y/136g
Ryan 206/??? 23y/15g Probably the only one who can play ruck/fwd.
Naismith 204/?? 31/??
Hayes -Brown A basketballer that will take time to develop
small Mid fwd
Bolton 175/77 26y/113g
Sonsie 181/?? 21y/10g
Campbell 182/?? 19y/0g
Medium mid/fwd
Martin 187/92 32/289
Small mid
Green 179/76 20y/0g
Prestia 175/84 31y/212g
Baker 173/72 26y/110g
Medium mid
Taranto 188/87 26Y/137g
Hopper 187/86 27Y/130g
Dow 183/79 22y/17g
Little comment from me here people know what i think about numbers the age of the better ones and the lack of quality ones and the lack of enough big mids..
The only development mids we have are Sonsie, Green, Campbell all smalls and Dow who is as skinny as they come and not big either and if honest has to be lucky not to have been delisted.

George retired. He wasn't delisted.
Oliver Hayes-Brown is already our second category B rookie alongside Colina.
We will have a spare category A rookie spot if we only use two picks in the National draft.
Senior spots: 34 ..... two picks will up this to 36
Cat. A rookies: 5 ..... one spare rookie spot.
Cat. B rookies: 2

RICHMOND
IN: Jacob Koschitzke (Hawthorn), Oliver Hayes-Brown (Cat B rookie), Sam Naismith (delisted free agent, formerly Sydney) Liam Fawcett, Kane McAuliffe (draft)
OUT: Bigoa Nyuon (North Melbourne), Ivan Soldo (Port Adelaide), Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt, Robbie Tarrant, Jason Castagna (retired), Kaelan Bradtke (delisted).
AVAILABLE LIST SPOTS: 1
It’s hard to see much automatic improvement in Richmond’s list based on the players brought into the club. Koschitzke struggled for much of 2023 at Hawthorn, Naismith has been in fine form in the VFL but hasn’t played AFL since 2020 and the others will likely take time. Riewoldt will be missed, Cotchin was probably done and the Tigers got nothing out of Tarrant, Nyuon or Castagna this year. While Soldo was probably surplus to requirements, he was still a useful back-up ruck. A bunch of second and third year Tigers will need to step up for Adem Yze to make finals in year one. The Tigers have opened the doors to East Perth’s Mitch Schofield and Richmond VFL’s Mykelti Lefau to claim the open spot on the list.
VERDICT: List has gone backwards for 2024

Irrelevant. It’s who the AFL wants to win the flag that makes all the difference
