Moneyball: The latest contract updates on players on rival radars

Jay Clark, Jon Ralph, Sam Landsberger and Glenn McFarlane
HeraldSun
June 28, 2023

RICHMOND

Trent Cotchin
Contract expires 2023
Seems more likely to hang up the boots than play on but he has definitely had more impact in the midfield midseason under Andrew McQualter.

Jack Riewoldt
Contract expires 2023
Already swapping jumpers with Tom Hawkins in a fair sign this year is a farewell tour. Would probably rather to bow out still playing good footy like Joel Selwood than playing on for one season too many.

Thomson Dow
Contract expires 2023
Every game in the back half of the season will count for the fringe midfielder who is looking to show he is able to cut it at the level.

Robbie Tarrant
Contract expires 2023
Been hit hard by a hip injury this year which will almost certainly see the defender retire at season’s end.

Reckon if Jack retires the need is not for one but two key forwards. Preferably a mature recruit and a junior.

If Tarrant retires and Young is not up to it which is my opinion atm  there is only really Miller and Nyuon left as depth who can play back. trouble is with  both of them they have stopped developing them  as defenders.
That being the case it only leaves Balta and Gibcus  who should hold down the key posts for years  but  a kpd would be a fairly high priority for me looking long term and depth.

Grimes will be 32 and Broad 30 they are the only third tall defensive types we have. It may not be a big problem if Bauer plays the role but in doing that we deplete our key fwd/tall  stocks even further than they already are.
We are in severe need of either a third tall defender or third tall forward depending on what way we go with Bauer just to cater to the future.

We have 4 primary ruckmen.Nankervis 29. Soldo 27, Colina 24 and Ryan 23.
Imo Ryan just needs to be played from here on in. Colina will be 24 on the list for three years and not even played a vfl game we have to replace him and i would look to trade Soldo to help get us back into the nd.For me another ruckman is needed given trades and delistings.

We have 6 medium and small defenders and can add Baker and Short to the list as mids who can play back.
The oldest is Vlastuin at 29 and the one i would delist is Mansell who we no longer play back anyway. Numbers are adequate for now.
Brown Banks and Smith all look likely and need to be further developed.

Medium and small forwards well they are basically smalls with Cumberland the biggest at 183cm.
Castagna has retired.  it won't go down well but i don't think MRJ will make it. his skills are just so poor atm.
Won't be surprised if Cumberland does not ask for a trade. That leaves Coulthard, Campbell and Clarke just think we need that will othe wisp kick goals out of their asses type.
For now with other priorities small fwd can wait.

Outside mids including wings. We have 5 including Short. McIntosh 30  Pickett 32 Ross 23 all lack hurt factor with ball in hand it leaves Ralphsmith who i think should be delisted. Really need an elite by foot wing with a big motor who does not panic.

Mids Martin 32 and Bolton 25 both are extremely dangerous fwds as well as being primary mids I think Taranto 26 can go here as well.

It leaves 34 year old Cotchin who will likely retire and Prestia 31 yo who is injury prone.Baker 26yo, Hopper 27yo, Green who i dont see anything in him Graham who is average and Dow who may be delisted. It makes for slim pickings especially when Prestia Dusty and Cotchins age are considered. There is so much work needed here.
For me for starters im looking fo a big explosive inside out mid to replace Dusty. Im also looking for a hard nosed hard at it mid with a bit of size to replace Cotchin for now.

Lots of work is needed obviously it cannot all be done in one go but the work needs to be started.

From Jon Ralph in the HeraldSun:

Richmond’s club legends Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt are expected to ease into retirement at the end of the season for a club with a list in transition as it fast-tracks the likes of Noah Cumberland, Samson Ryan, Josh Gibcus and Judson Clarke.

The Tigers are interested in GWS swingman Harry Himmelberg and will try to attract an experienced key position forward to replace Riewoldt if the free agent re-signs at the Giants.

Samson Ryan and Ben Miller are still raw, Noah Cumberland is a mid-sized forward, and Lynch’s latest foot issue is a reminder he is not especially durable.

Lynch is listed on the club’s injury list at 7-12 weeks with his metatarsal fracture so it would take something exceptional for him to play again after only four games this year.

While there are many key position backs on the free agency and trade table key forwards are few and far between.

Richmond has been blessed to rely on Jack Riewoldt’s star power and durability for so long, with the triple premiership star playing 13 seasons of at least 20 games in the 14 years from 2009-2022.

Where does your club spend its salary cap

Does your club splash the cash on the right players – and in the right positions on the ground? See who gets the biggest slice of the pie at every team, and what comes next.

Jay Clark, Jon Ralph, Glenn McFarlane and Sam Landsberger
HeraldSun
July 11, 2023

How your club uses its $14.7 million in salary cap this year has massive consequences on its ability to keep stars, to build a premiership list and retain some space for the star free agent to fill a key list hole.

At Richmond it is the mid-forwards like Dustin Martin who are million dollar men, with Shai Bolton to follow in his footsteps next year.

Glenn McFarlane, Jay Clark, Jon Ralph and Sam Landsberger assess where your club has spent its cash this season.

RICHMOND

Dustin Martin $1,250,000-$1,350,000, 32, Midfielder/Forward

Tom Lynch $925,000-$1,025,000, 30, Forward

Tim Taranto $700,000-$800,000, 25, Midfielder

Jacob Hopper $700,000-$800,000, 26, Midfielder

Dion Prestia $625,000-$725,000, 30, Midfielder

Shai Bolton $600,000-$700,000, 24, Midfielder/Forward

Nick Vlastuin $600,000-$700,000, 29, Defender

Richmond hasn’t budged from the strategy that prevailed in its premiership years that the midfield is where the bulk of its high-end salary cap should be spent. Leaving aside key forward Tom Lynch and experienced defender Nick Vlaustin, the investment is heavily in the engine room. But the beauty of that is that two of those players – Dustin Martin and Shai Bolton – are mid-forwards who are dangerous in both areas of the ground. Lynch’s deal was heavily back-ended, which means he is on close to $1 million now. Martin has one more year to run on his monster deal that helped to change the club’s fortunes. Does he see it out? Those close to him say he will, and he looks invested. Tim Taranto’s deal is a long one, but looks darn cheap now given his first season at Punt Rd could yet end in a Brownlow Medal. Bolton might be the Tigers’ most important player going forward. He is an exceptional value player right now, but his price will skyrocket next season as his new long-term deal starts.

I think its as simple as the best players are being paid the most. Reckon its the same at all clubs
Before getting old i think we will find Riewoldt and Cotchin were  among our highest paid along with Rance before retirement.

Every club’s big list calls over final six rounds

A host of players will be making a last-ditch effort to save or extend their careers in the final six rounds. Jon Ralph predicts every club’s toughest contract calls.

Jon Ralph
HeraldSun
July 17, 2023

RICHMOND

Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin showed as recently as Sunday against West Coast that although they will retire at season’s end, they will do so capable of strong team football.

Robbie Tarrant and Jason Castagna have retired and Marlion Pickett will play on with a one-year deal, but the list of recent premiership retirees means the list changeover at Richmond might be limited this year.

KEEP, TRADE OR FAREWELL: MAKING A CALL ON YOUR CLUB'S OUT OF CONTRACT PLAYERS: RICHMOND

Andrew Slevison
SEN
3 August 2023

Note: The Tigers won’t have to be too ruthless with delistings given Jason Castagna and Robbie Tarrant already retired, and the likelihood that Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt will follow suit.

Jacob Bauer

The 2022 mid-season rookie draftee earned an AFL debut in Round 17 after consistently impressive VFL form.

Is expected to pen a two-year deal with the Tigers.

Verdict: Two-year deal

Kaelan Bradtke

Taken as a rookie, Kaelan Bradtke only joined the club in February.

Given Jack Riewoldt is entering his twilight, the Tigers need some youth pushing through under Tom Lynch in the key forward ranks.

Verdict: One-year deal

Seth Campbell

Another rookie draftee, selected in the 2022 draft.

Seth Campbell has been restricted by an adductor injury this year and should be given more opportunities.

Verdict: One-year deal

Mate Colina

The former college basketballer continues to nurse a back injury.

Mate Colina hasn’t had many chances to prove himself and he’s a project player who would cost little, so the Tigers might as well stick with him.

But just as easily, they could end the experiment and no harm would be done.

Verdict: Rookie list spot

Matt Coulthard

The 2023 mid-season draft selection will undoubtedly get another deal.

Matt Coulthard debuted in Round 19, impressing as a second-half sub in Richmond’s win against Hawthorn before getting minutes against Melbourne on the weekend.

Possesses speed and smarts which could go a long way at the elite level.

Verdict: One-year deal

Trent Cotchin

The three-time premiership captain is nearing the end.

Cotchin has been a superb player over 16 years but his form has dropped off in 2023, apart from a few games.

It all be a sad day but the time has come for ‘Cotch’ to hang them up.

Verdict: Retirement

Thomson Dow

The midfielder was drafted with pick 21 in 2019 but it hasn’t quite gone to plan.

Dow has played just 14 times at AFL level and it appears as though his fate is much the same as fellow former first-rounder Riley Collier-Dawkins who was delisted after four years and 11 games.

The 21-year-old Dow has played just once for the senior side in 2023 and it appears as though his future does not lie with the club.

Verdict: Delisted

Jack Graham

Looked around at Port Adelaide last year but opted to stay put.

The premiership midfielder has been solid in recent weeks after some indifferent form in the middle of the season.

The Tigers could quite easily extend Jack Graham beyond 2023, but they could also look at using him in a trade if they want to try and lure a key forward to Punt Road.

But the likelihood is that Graham will stay a Tiger.

Verdict: Extend or look to trade

Rhyan Mansell

Rhyan Mansell’s versatility surely lands him another deal for 2024.

He was effective as a pressure forward earlier in the campaign, while he set the scene with his ferocious attack on the ball off half-back against Melbourne last weekend.

The 23-year-old appears to be the type of player the Tigers would like to keep on their list.

Verdict: One or two-year deal

Kamdyn McIntosh

The two-time flag winner has played every game as a winger in 2023.

Now 29, Kamdyn McIntosh is one of the more experienced players at a club that could yet lose Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt to retirement.

McIntosh continues to play an important role and should go around again in 2024.

Verdict: One-year deal

Marlion Pickett

Another premiership player on Richmond’s list.

Marlion Pickett found himself in hot water with the law stemming from a burglary investigation back in Western Australia. The Tigers stuck by him through that and he has only missed one game this season.

Pickett has had some big moments in 2023 and should be kept on at least for one more year.

Verdict: One-year deal

Bigoa Nyuon

The key position player has been on the list for four seasons, playing once at AFL level in 2022.

Bigoa Nyuon has been a dependable defender in the VFL while also spending time in the ruck and up forward.

His athleticism, aerial ability and 197cm frame should be enough to warrant a short-term deal despite his lack of senior footy.

Verdict: One or two-year deal

Hugo Ralphsmith

Hugo Ralphsmith’s speed and dash has been used mainly off half-back or on the wing.

There is enough there to work with and after 32 senior games might just need some continuity at the top level.

The 21-year-old has AFL attributes and could be of interest to a rival club if the Tigers were looking to use him in a trade.

GWS were reportedly keen last year when the two clubs were negotiating about Jacob Hopper. The pull from Giants coach Adam Kingsley, who worked with Ralphsmith at the Tigers, could be real.

Verdict: Extend or trade

Jack Riewoldt

Similar to his premiership teammate Trent Cotchin, the end might have come for Jack Riewoldt.

He has played a selfless role in 2023 without Tom Lynch by his side, frequently copping the opposition’s number one defender and working tirelessly for the team.

After almost 350 games and more than 780 goals, Riewoldt will walk away as a modern day Tigers great.

Verdict: Retirement

James Trezise

The VFL product was added to the senior list via the 2023 mid-season draft.

He has impressed as a rebounding defender at the level below the AFL and should be given another shot on the list.

Verdict: One-year deal

n.b. The above article is incorrect. Graham, McIntosh and Pickett have already triggered one-year extensions until the end of 2024. So, they aren't out of contract.

Does the journo realise Castagna's spot has already been filled by one of the MSD picks? ::)

Also HRS and Biggie should be cut

HRS has trade value and Biggy should be developed more as a ruck - think he'll be delisted though. Wouldn't be at all surprised if Cumberland requests a trade. :shh

It seems clear that the strategy at Richmond is/was that;

- we would use our draft picks, which were/are going to be bad ones due to recent success and trades (Taranto, Hopper) to select flankers and wingers.
- top up with good key position players from other clubs as free agents. Example is Lynch.

the problem with this is that you are going to pay very high prices for the ones you want. An example of this is Himmelburg who has signed a 5 year deal at $800K to stay at the Giants. Obviously this is a huge price for an older, some would say competent key. We would have to offer a premium to get him.

Further worryingly is that Himmelburg has now said he enjoys playing down back and we wanted him as a forward.

It is beginning to look like the decision to overlook the tall forwards in the mid-season draft for Coulthard and Trasize may have been another mistake.

Could we tempt McKay from North to come over and play as a CHF?
