Saints cancel trip with TigerCaroline Wilson

St Kilda footballers Sam Fisher and David Armitage have cancelled an end-of-season trip to the US with Richmond's Dustin Martin at the urging of their coach.
It has emerged that Saints coach Scott Watters spoke to Fisher and Armitage after learning of their holiday plans. The meeting was part of a wider confrontation involving all St Kilda players following their ''Mad Monday'' indiscretion.
St Kilda football boss Chris Pelchen warned Watters he could not ban the proposed trip with Martin or enforce end-of-season break restrictions on his team, but Watters is understood to have received the backing of Pelchen and his entire club executive in strongly urging Fisher and Armitage to change their travel plans.
Watters, who made his disappointment known in no uncertain terms to all his players, communicated to Fisher, Armitage and several others that their decision-making processes needed to improve because they could impact upon themselves and the club. Watters is understood to have made it clear that holidaying with Martin in the US could be one of those decisions that could have a negative impact on St Kilda.
Martin and Fisher committed separate indiscretions at the end of season 2012 with Fisher dropped from the Saints' leadership group for 2013 and Martin taken under the wing of his young captain Trent Cotchin for several weeks and also nurtured by the Tigers' senior assistant coach Mark Williams.
Martin's off-field issues have punctuated his career at Richmond and, despite a solid 2013 season, he remains at the crossroads with the club, having so far refused to sign a new contract with the Tigers.
His handcuff gesture during the first half of the elimination final against Carlton last Sunday resulted in him receiving a suspended $2000 fine from the AFL.
Although Richmond believed the 22-year-old was poised to put pen to a new two-year deal in August, contract talks stalled again and Martin is no certainty to remain at the club and suggestions the club trade him have not been ruled out.
Martin's gesture, reportedly a cheerio aimed at a friend of his bikie father, came just days before the revelation that Jake King had last month invited one of Melbourne's most high-profile crime figures into the club's rooms after a game, a move slammed on Friday by AFL boss Andrew Demetriou.Fisher also appears at the crossroads with the Saints. The 31-year-old dual club champion and one-time All-Australian defender has attracted interest from Greater Western Sydney and, with long-time teammate Nick Dal Santo, could continue the mounting exodus of older players from St Kilda as Watters' thorough regeneration of his senior list continues.
The coach is believed to have passionately demonstrated how disappointed he was in his squad after senior Saint Leigh Montagna hired two dwarf entertainers for the players' post-season function at Bell's Hotel in South Melbourne.
Both the senior coach and the AFL had spoken to the St Kilda players just days before the function, at which player Clinton Jones set one of the entertainers alight.
The subsequent fall-out had the players curbing their drinking at the Saints' best-and-fairest and cancel their after-party.
Almost a dozen footballers changed their overseas travel plans.
Team leaders, led by captain Nick Riewoldt, apologised to Saints fans via a filmed presentation and chief executive Michael Nettlefold said the club had drawn a line in the sand regarding off-field behaviour and culture.
