"Dustin Martin was in on their day off to do everything he can to overcome his hamstring injury for round one of the finals" - Tom Browne.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Of Martin’s return at Tigerland, Richmond high-performance manager Peter Burge said:

“Dusty is going quite well, he is firming [to play].

“He has had two pretty good sessions. On Saturday he did about 12ks at 80 per cent speed and today he did about 10kms at around 80 per cent speed again, but he did a lot more footy stuff today, change of direction, that sort of stuff. His agility today was a lot more aggressive and more intense than he has been able to give us.

“It’s really been a confidence thing with him as well. He hasn’t dealt with this sort of thing previously. He has been very apprehensive to push too quickly, given we had a little incident about five weeks back, but I feel like we are making progress.

“I list him as questionable on our scale only because we have a few more sessions, but he will move into the probable by the weekend.

“We thought we were probably going to play on the Saturday. If we were on the Saturday I would say he is almost definitely going to play, just the extra two days we lose a session, but he is going pretty well.”

What impact can Dusty have after eight weeks off?

Dustin Martin has defined almost every finals campaign he has played in — but this year is different. What impact can the superstar have after two months on the sidelines?

Sports medical expert Dr Peter Brukner has backed Richmond superstar Dustin Martin to make a return for the Tigers' cutthroat final against the Brisbane...

Dusty poised for return

Dustin Martin is on track to make his comeback against Brisbane.

By AAP
25 August 2022

RICHMOND superstar Dustin Martin is firming for a dramatic finals return after completing his heaviest training load yet since his hamstring injury.

Martin hasn't played since suffering a hamstring injury in round 16, but is building towards a return and spent time back in Richmond's main training group as well as working hard alone.

"He did a bit of training here today, and we have another session on Saturday, so hopefully he can do a bit more then," ruckman Toby Nankervis said.

"We will know more next week but, hopefully, he does [face Brisbane].

"Yeah probably [this is the most main training Martin has done] for a while.

"He's been doing a mountain of work away from the group, he's been training really well with the rehab group but to have him back in the main group gave everyone a really big lift.

"So hopefully more training in the next couple of days."

From Barrett's Sliding Doors column:

IF ...
there's a Brownlow medallist who has only played eight of the past 26 Tigers matches and has been banged up with very serious kidney damage and hamstring strains in the past 13 months ...

THEN ...
do not dare write Dusty off. He will play next Thursday night, against the Lions at the Gabba. And he will probably be best on ground.

Hmm play him fwd most of the game.

The following set up looks pretty darn good to me

Cumberland - Riewoldt - Bolton
Martin - Lynch - MRJ.
Miller plays second ruck and goes fwd  to change it up  also gives cover if we lose a tall fwd or tall defender.

My only wish is we actually found a big inside mid.

I would give him time in the guts to we need him there at times , but not blow him up make the lions panic.

RUSTY DUSTY?

Richmond is the most threatening side outside the top four because the Tigers go into the finals campaign unburdened by fear and expectation like the others. It makes them dangerous.

Richmond are “playing with house money”. They have pocketed three flags with the rump of this playing group, so squeezing out another with a team that has been rebuilt on the run this year would be a bonus. Nothing is expected of them and falling short is not a comment on their standing.

They have played the year basically without Dustin Martin, the sun around which the Tigers’ game has long orbited, and have worked out how to play and win without the heavy reliance on him.

Now they get him back, the question, which feels like a luxury, is to work out how Martin can complement Richmond not how Richmond can complement Martin.

They will both find a way. The more pressing question is how Martin comes back after nine weeks out? A player as durable as Martin has seldom had to ask this question of himself.

The Lions feel like a counterpoint to Richmond. With one win from six finals under Chris Fagan and all of the losses at home at the Gabba that is a heavy burden going into an elimination final against a team like Richmond. Of comfort is the fact the one final win they did have was ... against the Tigers two years ago at the Gabba.

Id play him as a forward ... no position just go anywhere he wants in the forward line. If we're winning comfortably, take him of @ end of the 3rd quarter.

Dusty could be unleashed as a forward for #AFLLionsTigers on Thursday night, & one Tiger had a front row seat today to the “scary” show his opponent could be in for. “He’s not a conventional forward…he is like trying to move a brick wall.”

Could this possibly be the last game we see Dustin Martin play for Richmond?
