Martin not far off best says coach Hardwick

Damien Hardwick senses a breakthrough game isn't far away for Tigers superstar Dustin Martin, who he described as a "spirit level" for the Richmond side.

Tigers talisman Martin has been solid but not spectacular in the opening rounds, last Monday booting one goal and three behinds in their 18-point loss to Melbourne.

Hardwick felt the 31-year-old Brownlow medallist reflected the Tigers, with both close to regaining their best form.

"He was this close last week to breaking that game open, and we know and he knows that he's a real spirit level of our footy club," the coach said of Martin.

"Richmond spirit is based around certain players, and he's one of those guys that brings that.

"We felt he was really, really close - he had some great phases of play last week and probably just didn't capitalise.

"He kicked one goal, three, and when he's firing on his whole eight cylinders he's probably kicking three-one which is a difference-maker to the competition.

"But he's building slowly into the season so we look forward to him ripping a game apart pretty shortly."

Could trading Dustin Martin be a win-win for both club & player? (SEN)

COULD TRADING DUSTIN MARTIN BE A WIN-WIN FOR BOTH CLUB AND PLAYER?

Lachlan Geleit
SEN
May 1, 2023

Richmond find themselves in a precarious position both on and off-field through seven rounds.

With a 1-1-5 record, the Tigers sit 16th on the ladder, but they won’t get a prized draft pick at the end of this season if they continue to linger at the bottom of the table.

Having traded their 2023 first-round pick, plus a 2022 second-rounder, for Jacob Hopper, the Tigers find themselves with a lack of draft capital.

SEN’s Tom Morris believes Richmond may need to get creative in the trade period given their early picks in both 2022 and 2023 have been gobbled up by trades.

“Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto are the two players, through no fault of their own, who are sort of caught up in all of this, both signed long-term deals,” Morris told SEN Breakfast.

“So Jacob Hopper came to the club and Richmond gave up a future-first rounder which is currently pick No. 3 to GWS and also pick 31 which the Giants used on Toby McMullin.

“Then the Tim Taranto deal was they traded picks 12 and 19 to GWS which was used on Elijah Hewitt (with West Coast) and Max Gruzewski.

“So this year in 2023 their first pick at the moment is pick 21.

“They are currently the second most experienced list in and the third oldest list.

“In 2021, they had five top 30 draft picks but none of those players yet have really kicked on.

“So the fallout is that they're quite old, they're quite experienced and yet they're 16th on the ladder and they don't have draft capital this year.

“So they might have to get creative in the trade period.”

Looking at Richmond’s list, the Tigers may need to be willing to let go of a quality player if they try and bring in early draft picks.

While he’s now a veteran of the competition, Morris, Kane Cornes and Nathan Buckley believe Dustin Martin would still hold serious value at the trade table.

The trio discussed whether the Tigers should consider letting their superstar move for draft picks this trade period.

Morris: “Does Dustin Martin have any trade value whatsoever? Now, he's got one year left on a lucrative deal.”

“So I'm not saying that a club is going to pick up his entire contract, but he's a bit like Nat Fyfe nearing the end of his career, who is out of contract.

“If Dustin Martin came to the club or Richmond said to Dustin Martin would there be suitors for him?”

Cornes: “100 per cent there would be.”

Buckley: “It might be a win-win.”

“Sometimes we look at this and we go, ’It’s, it's no good for the club. It's no good for Dusty, we want him to be a one club player’.

“I get the sense that Dustin Martin is as wedded to Richmond as anyone is to any side.

“But it actually could be something that he hasn't considered, go and play a couple of years at a club and give himself another chance to add to his amazing resume already.

“That might actually help Richmond in the short term as well and into the long term.

“So there can be win-wins with this.”

Morris: “I don't think it's any coincidence that Damien Hardwick's contract and Dustin Martin's contract are both aligned, to the end of 2024.”

“I think there's a bit to play out over the next 18 months as to where those two people go beyond Richmond.”

Cornes: “I think it's definitely a conversation worth having and one that will continue to be had.

“I think particularly if Richmond's form continues like this.”

Who knows what his contract $ would be in the final year. Whatever it is, it would be pretty hefty. We'd be having to pay a fair bit of it to get a decent pick out of anyone I would think. What if he went to Carlton or Geelong  :chuck

Who would want him at his current performance level?

Nobody would trade anything useful.

SUNS NOT KEEN ON DUSTY DESPITE PRIOR INTEREST

Gold Coast will not be a contender for Dustin Martin’s services even if the Tigers or the triple Norm Smith Medallist explore his options later this year.

Former Suns captain Wayne Campbell, now the Gold Coast footy boss, was in contact with Martin last year as he finished a season that saw him battling grief and recovering from an internal injury as he then battled repeat hamstring sprains.

Martin has only one year on his contract left – although at $1.2 million – which in theory makes it easier for a club to offer him a multi-year deal that would absorb the 2024 salary.

Martin turns 32 in June and has always been keen to play well into his 30s but has not had his usual game-altering affect on games this year despite high possession tallies as a forward.

But the Suns have worked so hard to fix their cap picture they will instead focus on retention of established stars despite their interest 12 months ago.

Yes I remember when Wayne Campbell was Suns captain before it was cool -- before it was a club even!

Dusty as a forward isn't working. He's kicked less goals compared to previous years despite playing closer to goal. He's needed in the middle as well. There was passage in the 3rd quarter where Dusty got the centre clearance and set up a goal. Next centrebounce he wasn't in the centre square and the Suns got the easy clearance and quick reply. It was just an odd coaching move to move Dusty out of the middle straight after winning a clean centre clearance and a goal assist.

Martin has been solid rather than spectacular at the Tigers this season.

But with Richmond posting just a win and a draw across their opening seven games, the Tigers are in desperate need of a dominant display from the three-time North Smith medallist.

Martin's return of 4.4 in front of goal is well down on his usual numbers, especially considering he's spending more time in attack this year.

Damien Hardwick said it was up to the rest of the team to ensure the forwards were getting better looks.

"Do we wish he (Martin) kicked some more goals up forward? Absolutely," Hardwick said.

"But are we helping him? Probably not.

"So I think what you will find is Dustin's a real barometer for us.

"If we're moving the ball and playing the way we want to play, lo and behold guys like Dustin and Shai will become better players because we're giving them an opportunity to play the way we want to play.

"I'm sure those players will respond when we get that right."

Dusty is just missing those goals he used to nail like the snap in the 3rd quarter. Nice to see him finish off that one in the last.

At the moment he's having good games but still mortal. He's assisting others in scoring but he needs that game where everything he touches especially inside F50 turns to gold and generates a wave of momentum for us.

27 disposals (16k, 11h, 12c, 14u, 63% eff.)
4 marks
4 tackles (1 F50 tackle)
1 clearance
4 inside 50s
347 metres gained
2 intercepts
8 score involvements
1 goal assist
1 goal
1 behind
84% time on ground
