Grimes’ staging getting to a point where it’s going to “tarnish his career” By SEN
20 September 2020 Brendon Goddard says Richmond defender Dylan Grimes is going to be remembered as a “stager” if he continues to exaggerate contact.
It comes after Kane Cornes called for umpires to identify Grimes as “serial stager” and to stop awarding him soft free kicks.
Goddard believes the AFL isn’t doing enough to stamp out staging after Grimes and Tigers teammate Nick Vlastuin had their fines overturned at the Tribunal in August.
“What do I need to apologise for? That he (Grimes) is a serial stager? That hasn’t changed,” the former Saint and Bomber told ABC Grandstand.
“I’ve said he’s a great player and it’s a shame that we have to talk about some of his staging on the field as opposed to a lot of the great things he does in terms of his football.
“I think it’s getting to a point where it’s going to tarnish his career and he’s going to be remembered as a stager.
“The AFL had an opportunity to really put their foot down with him and (Nick) Vlastuin in the same game and they kind of backtracked and they fought their fine and they won.
“It only encourages his behaviour.”
