"I had just a ligament attached after the game in Tassie. Really unlucky circumstances, I just got my thumb caught in another player's jumper, so I'll miss a couple of weeks," Grimes told AFL.com.au at Marvel Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

"I see the doctor today. Until this afternoon, I'm hopeful I'll play round one. I think it's on the shorter end of the recovery timeline. If it's not round one, I'm really hopeful it will be round two."

"I had surgery two days and it's still feeling pretty tender and sore but it's one of those ones that can turn around pretty quick," Grimes said, just eight days out from Richmond's round-one match.

"We haven't even ruled out round one yet so there's hopefully still a chance that can happen in my eyes."

From what I saw Grimesy trained today with the main group without any noticeable bandage on his left hand.

Not sure if that means he's better than evens chance to play round 1 but it's a positive sign  .

The next main training session should be Tuesday morning and then the Captain's run on Wednesday morning. If Grimesy traines fully in both of those then he must be a shot to play  .

Tom Browne on 7news said Grimes was put through a bit of a session today and Richmond won't be making a call on whether he will play until Wednesday "the last minute".

The scroll along the bottom of the screen had Tuesday as a key fitness test.

Lets hope Dimma is playing some ducks and drakes here. Getting Carlton to prepare for Balta down back. Its a totally different team structure that way
