--------------------------------------------------------

VICTORIA Metro has kept alive its hopes of winning the 2010 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships by thumping the Northern Territory by 89 points on Friday.

At a cold and wet Visy Park, Vic Metro led from start to finish and gradually increased its lead before unleashing a final-quarter onslaught.

The home state kicked right away in the last quarter to win convincingly, 18.12 (120) to 4.7 (31).

Vic Metro led by 16 points at the first change and six goals at half time.

Midfielder Thomas Schneider, who finished the match with 22 possessions and three goals, was instrumental in establishing Vic Metro’s lead.

The Oakleigh Chargers ballwinner was among the best afield before being rested for much of the final term.

Josh Caddy (21 disposals, seven clearances) and fellow midfielder Andrew Gaff were both effective again, the pair aided by promising ruckman Josh Marchback who worked hard around the ground.

It was an easy day at the office for Vic Metro, which heavily rotated stars such as Gaff and Ben Jacobs, while prospective Western Bulldogs father-son pair Mitch Wallis and Tom Liberatore both sat out the match.

The margin might have been a whole lot greater for the NT had it not been for Steven May.

In a change of position for the 190cm forward, the big man spent most of the afternoon across half-back and also spent time in the ruck.

He showed his versatility by gathering 26 touches, six of which were hard-ball gets, and 11 rebound 50s. He also drifted forward to boot a goal.

Shannon Rioli, the brother of former Bomber Dean, impressed at ground level at times while Dean Staunton continued his impressive championships for the NT.

Against one of the best midfields in the competition, the 170cm youngster from Southern Districts had 21 disposals and showed dash.

But the afternoon proved a big percentage-booster for Vic Metro, which improved its win-loss record to 3-1.

Vic Country remains undefeated and will win the national titles should it maintain its unbeaten run. However, if it drops a match the under-18 championships could come down to a matter of percentage.

Cameron Guthie was again in Vic Metro's best

Gee I was wondering who this bloke May was, picking up 24 possies in three quarters in a side getting belted. Had assumed he was a mid, but a tall forward having a run on the ball - that's pretty impressive.

Here's Steven MAY's profile - 10/1/92, 190cm, 93kg from Southern Districts

Marchback is a 200cm, 89kg ruckman. Probably not a surprise he was named in the bests against the shorter NT kids.

Caddy and Guthrie are 186cm mids. Maybe types we'll consider in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

It sucks that the Division One games have been moved down to Geelong next week. Hard to judge these kids properly without seeing them live.

Vic Country in box seat in U18 championships
By Tim Roman
Sat 26 June, 2010

A TRIPLE-header at a cold and wet Visy Park on Saturday closed out the penultimate round of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and left Vic Country in pole position to take the 2010 title.

Country dominated Queensland to remain the competition’s only undefeated team, running out 108-point winners and restricting its opponent to two goals.

For the Victorians, Tom Lynch played a fine game up forward kicking four goals and gathering 18 possessions while Devon Smith was a consistent threat, picking up numerous touches through the midfield. James Nelis and Liam Rutledge were the shining lights for Queensland.

The win puts Country in control of its destiny, knowing that a win on Wednesday against South Australia will secure its first championship since 2003.

The South Australians warmed up for their clash with an easy 75-point win over Tasmania. Lewis Hender kicked four goals for the Croweaters, while Jacob Gilbee kicked four for Tassie.

In the day’s other game an inaccurate Western Australian beat NSW/ACT by 16 points in an entertaining match. Shane Kersten was outstanding for WA, kicking four goals, while Kane Murphy was best for NSW/ACT, kicking three.

The final round of the championships will take place over two days this week, the AFL having taken the decision last week to move the games from Etihad Stadium.

On Tuesday, division two teams will play off, with Queensland meeting Northern Territory and Tasmania playing NSW/ACT at Visy Park.

Wednesday will see Skilled Stadium in Geelong host division one games between Vic Metro and WA and a top of the table clash between Vic Country and South Australia which will determine the final winner of the championship.

Vic Country continues red-hot winning streak
EMMA QUAYLE
June 27, 2010

Dandenong player Tom Lynch kicked four goals for Country in its win, playing with plenty of energy at centre half-forward, while midfielder Shaun Atley was quick and effective inside the packs, Mitch Hallahan damaging outside them, particularly in the first half, and both Billie Smedts and Dyson Heppell calm across the half-back line.

Jayden Pitt's cleverness and class in the forward line was important too, while coach Robert Hyde was pleased with Jed Lamb's ability to push up on to a wing and prove he can be more than a mid-sized marking forward.

Other players to stand out included Josh Bruce, NSW/ACT's robust forward and a probable Team GWS target, as well as Kane Murphy - the son of former Sydney player David, tied to St Kilda under the NSW scholarship scheme - who kicked three skilful goals, including one tight running shot from the boundary line.

WA forward Jack Darling had a notable size advantage on those around him, but still attacked his opponents with fierce tackling and won most of his 22 possessions in contested situations, while midfielder Harley Bennell's best moments were very good, including a few sublime traps and one long romp down the wing, which finished in a goal.

Both of South Australia's big men - Scott Lycett and Daniel Gorringe, potential top-10 picks - dominated the ruck contests, SA recording 50 hit-outs to Tasmania's 20. The pair looked agile, competitive and able to hold marks when they were moved forward.

SA onballers Jared Polec and Chad Wingard - the latter not available until the 2011 draft - had classy moments, while playing loose across half-back, 195-centimetre potential top-three pick Sam Day looked smoother as the game unfolded, his marking and long kicking a feature.

U18: NT outlasts Qld

Territory outlasts Queensland at U18 titles
By Ben Broad
Tue 29 June, 2010

Northern Territory   2.1   7.5  10.5    12.7-79
Queensland           1.5   2.8   5.10    9.10-64

Q1: Dean Staunton with 11 disposals best NT
Q2: NT Edwards 2 g Wray 2g with Staunton in everything
Q3: 7 degrees testing !!! Shreeve prominent for Q ( 14 p) and Edwards 3 g for NT
Q4: NT won 79 - 64

------------------------------------------------------

THE NORTHERN Territory has ensured its 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships campaign has finished in style, outlasting a gallant Queensland side by 15 points at a blustery Visy Park on Tuesday.

Both teams entered their final match of the championships without a win and were simply playing for pride, and the NT set up its victory with a seven-goal first half.

Cool and swirly conditions didn’t make for much of a spectacle, but the NT did manage to boot 7.5 to 2.8 in the first half and seemed to have control.

Queensland hit back in the second half but each time it got within serious striking distance, the NT responded to kill off any threat. The NT eventually won 12.7 (79) to 9.10 (64).

Much of the NT’s early ascendancy was due to the brilliance of youngster and likely Greater Western Sydney target Shaun Edwards.

The 16-year-old cut loose just before half time, booting two goals and using his dash to give his side the edge heading into the break. He finished with three majors.

Dean Staunton continued his outstanding carnival. He had 26 possessions - 18 in the first half - five inside 50s and six tackles to be a catalyst for the NT.

While he wasn’t as prolific after half time, he sealed his team’s win with two goals in the final term, one a superb running effort from just inside 50m that halted Queensland’s momentum.

Steven May, another of NT’s big guns, was also a significant contributor after a subdued first half. He moved from a midfield role to attack and finished the match with two important goals.

Queensland’s Adam Oxley was terrific, booting 3.3 to keep his side in it early and provide spark up forward.

Luke Shreeve (16 disposals, eight inside 50s) and Jake Crawford (15 touches, five tackles) also worked hard for Queensland while ruckman Tom Hickey helped turn the tide his side’s way in the second half.

He not only had 29 hit-outs, but looked dangerous in attack and booted a goal.

However it wasn’t enough, with Staunton and May holding sway for the NT and making sure their team’s final match of the championships was a success.

Tassie wins U18 Division Two title
By Ben Broad
5:55 PM Tue 29 June, 2010

Tasmania:  4.0   9.0  10.3  13.6 (84)
NSW/ACT:  2.1   3.1    4.4    6.6 (42)

GOALS
TAS: Charlie Riewoldt 4, Jacob Gillbee 2, Sam Rainbird 2, Jimmy Webster, Michael Musicka, Sam Darley, Andrew Phillips, Cody Thorp
NSW/ACT: Blake Bray 2, Josh Bruce 2, Kane Murphy, Wade Hancock

BEST
TAS: Rhys Mott, Sam Darley, Sam Rundle,  Jacob Gillbee, Joseph Groenewegen, Andrew Phillips, Rudy Barrett
NSW/ACT: Alex Overs, Josh Bruce, Mark Whiley, Anthony Miles, Jarred Lane, Sam Martyn

The following players received their State MVP awards:
Tasmania: Joshua Green
NSW/ACT: Anthony Miles

----------------------------------------------------------------

TASMANIA has scored an upset win over NSW/ACT to claim the Division Two title at the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Both teams entered the match with 2-2 records, having beaten their fellow division two opponents but suffered losses against those states vying for the division one title.

However the NSW/ACT side had fared better in its matches against superior opposition and entered the match a warm favourite.

But Tasmania showed little regard for any favourite tag, careering away in the first half before eventually winning by 42 points, 13.6 (84) to 6.6 (42).

Matthew Armstrong’s side had to achieve its win without skipper and playmaker Josh Green, who left the field in the first term with a fractured rib.

But the likes of Rhys Mott (27 disposals, four clearances) and Jacob Gillbee (17, four clearances) stepped up in their captain’s absence.

Sam Darley, who enjoyed a stellar carnival, was also superb as he consistently won the ball and used it with precision either when transferring it from defence or taking it inside 50.

While that trio won plenty of footy, the Tasmanians rarely missed when they went inside 50.

Charlie Riewoldt, bother of Richmond spearhead Jack, enjoyed a great second term to boot three goals and the Tasmanians went to the main break leading 9.0 to 3.1.

NSW/ACT star Anthony Miles (18 possessions, seven clearances) lifted after half time and Kurt Aylett (14 disposals, five hardball gets) also tried to get his team back into the contest.

Key forward Josh Bruce (13 disposals, two goals) started to get his hands on the ball, but the Rams simply had too much ground to make up.

Tasmania led by 35 points at the final break, and when Riewoldt seized his chance to boot his fourth mid-way through the final term it was game over.

When the final siren sounded Tasmania celebrated its second division two title of the past three years.
