Shaun Grigg hopes for win with Richmond after losing two finals
By Pat Nolan
Ballarat Courier
Sept. 4, 2014

SHAUN Grigg is hoping the third time is the charm in Richmond's quest to win its first AFL final since 2001.

Grigg, the former Redan and North Ballarat Rebels winger, has lost two finals in his 121 senior AFL games and is hoping Sunday's clash against Port Adelaide will buck the trend.

And if there is any sign which might point to the Tigers recording a victory, it is the fact his newborn son, Sonny, is yet to witness a Richmond loss.

Grigg's wife, Sarah, gave birth to their first child in June and the Tigers have not lost since.

"Sonny has been to one game so far, we don't know if he will come to Adelaide yet, though," Grigg said. "We've done all the hard work to make it to the finals and we don't just want to be there to make up the numbers."

In Grigg's first final, while playing for Carlton in an elimination final against Brisbane in 2009, the Blues surrendered a 30-point lead to go down.

Then in last year's finals series, Richmond again gave up a three-quarter time lead, eventually going down to Carlton by 20 points.

Grigg said his side's run to finals this year (the Tigers won their last nine matches of the season to sneak into the top eight by one game), meant the club was used to playing uphill battles.

"The preparation has been pretty much the same as other games, it's like we've been playing an elimination final every week," he said. "There was probably a bit of expectation on us last year and we don't have as much this year, but we go in with every expectation we will win."

Key to the finals, will go to Boak.
