Has to at least keep this standard or be demoted.

As the final siren sounded on Richmond's most important victory in a dozen years, the ball rested in Chris Newman's sure hands.

He is the human face of Richmond's decade of despair, next week equalling Trevor Barker's record of 230 games without a finals contest.

Yet what might once have been some twisted joke of a milestone against Sydney will just be another curio on the way to September for Newman.

He booted the ball skywards not out of jubilation but something resembling relief.

Not that Newman would concede Richmond would play finals for the first time since 2001.

"The lid is on.

"Don't worry, the lid is on until we are there,'' he laughed.

"'It is just good to be in the season. This time for a lot of years I have played we have been looking to the end of the season by now. It's just nice to be in the mix and just staying alive.''

"As I have always said the (Barker) record doesn't matter. It's the hand I have been dealt and so be it.

"As long as we get there before we finish, I don't care.

Today Newy broke Trevor Barker's record for the most games (231) without playing a final.

Fitting we won to secure our place in the finals so Newy will finally see September action (touchwood no injury)  :thumbsup.

Tigers determined to deliver 231-game Newman's finals dream

RICHMOND veteran Chris Newman is on the verge of his first finals campaign after 231 games.

Newman holds the unwanted record of most games played without a final, surpassing St Kilda great Trevor Barker at the MCG on Saturday.

Newman's desperate bid for September action was given a boost after the Tigers registered an emphatic 41-point win over Hawthorn.

The win moved Richmond to sixth place on 12 wins, usually the magic number for playing finals.

Teammate Alex Rance admits the team is determined to take the former captain to uncharted territory this season.

"I think he instilled a lot of our attitudes and beliefs [in the] early days when the club wasn't doing so well," Rance said.

"I think it means so much to him because he believes in this group so much. For him to not have the rewards finals-wise, it's a bit heartbreaking really.

"It's on us now. He's given so much to us, so it's about time we give back to him."

The win over Hawthorn has done plenty for the team's confidence, and the team is hoping it can make an impact, should September beckon.

"It instills that belief that our game-plan works and can fire under a good opponent," Rance said.

"I think our playing group has had that belief but there's no doubt it's a fair injection in the arm," coach Damien Hardwick said.

Just have to make sure he doesn't hurt himself as the finals come up.

Happy for him. He deserves it and is still playing good football IMO.

Hypothetical. Does his knee a la Cotchin vs freo in Round 23 (playable but down on form). Do we play him in the finals?
