I think our playing group has had that belief but there's no doubt it's a fair injection in the arm," coach Damien Hardwick said.

Let's hope for Newy's sake that ankle niggle is just a minor thing and he's okay to play. He was hobbling today when they interviewed him on the news.

Stray thoughts

- Barring injury Chris Newman's first finals appearance is just a formality. Time to put him in cotton wool until week one?

Tiger veteran Newman no certainty to end 232-game finals drought
By Jennifer Phelan

RICHMOND veteran Chris Newman hasn't given up on playing in his first ever final despite a lingering ankle injury costing him the last three games of the season.

The 31-year-old, who holds the record for the most games played without a final, has not appeared on the field since round 20's win over the Brisbane Lions.

He is suffering from a syndesmosis injury to his right ankle, which affects the ligament that connects the tibia and fibula bones.

It's also known as a high ankle sprain with the recovery usually expected to double that of a normal sprain.

He had a setback at training last week but was hopeful of being named to face Essendon on Saturday night.

Now, after missing the win over the Bombers, he will need to prove his fitness this week if he is to play in next week's final – likely on Sunday against Carlton – and remains optimistic he can do it.

"It's pretty good. It's progressing well; it's kind of caused me a little bit more trouble than I'd expected," Newman told AFL.com.au.

"It's just one of those things that I just have to manage and make sure it's 100 per cent.

"Obviously when you get an injury around your ankle, it's hard to avoid with the amount of times you have to use it throughout the game.

"I've just tried to get it as right as possible and hopefully I can come back and not have any more trouble with it."

Newman said he "did a bit of damage" to that important ligament that joins the two leg bones but understood he escaped what could have been a more serious complaint.

"I was lucky it wasn't too much damage because there have been a few boys who have been sidelined from it that have had more extreme cases," he said.

"I've just done a little bit of damage to the outside of the ankle as well.

"It's all progressing really well so I should be fighting fit soon."

Newman isn't sure if he'll need surgery after the finals, which would signal the first time he would go under the knife in a post-season situation.

He knows he just needs to prove himself at training but has acknowledged the challenge in front of him having missed the past three weeks.

"It's not an ideal preparation going into our first finals series in so long but no doubt I just have to keep my fitness up and just keep some touch so I don't lose too much and I'm ready to come back in," he said.

"It's feeling good and hopefully it just goes away."

On Thursday, coach Damien Hardwick said there was no reason to risk players at this stage of the season before they decided not to name Newman for Saturday night's game.

He also while there was "no sentiment in AFL footy", the former captain's experience would mean he would be a starter next week if he got through training.

"If he's fit to play, he'll play. We've just got to make sure he's fit," Hardwick said.

He trained yesterday and said it felt pretty good.
Also said he was blowing and needed the training this week to get his fitness back up.
Pretty confident though. Fingers crossed for him..

Chris Newman will do anything to break his finals duck

By Jennifer Phelan

JACK Riewoldt is "jumping out of his skin" over playing in Richmond's first final in 12 years and is expected to return from back and knee issues on Sunday, says Chris Newman.

And Newman plans on joining Riewoldt as key inclusions for the Tigers for their elimination final against Carlton at the MCG – even if it's as the substitute.

Riewoldt didn't play in Saturday night's win over Essendon, with the club citing back soreness as the reason.

He has also been plagued by a knee issue that stems back to when he jarred it against Carlton in round 21.

Newman said the spearhead had every intention of playing in his maiden final.

"I think it's back related and he's had a bit of knee trouble as well, but he's fine, he's ready to go," Newman said on Monday.

"I know that he's done everything in his powers to be able to play this week.

"From all reports and from speaking to him this morning, he can't wait so I think everyone knows Jack and he'll be jumping out of his skin."

Newman has missed the past three games with right ankle syndesmosis; a high degree sprain that affects the ligament that connects the tibia and fibula bones.

The 31-year-old is confident he'll get through training this week and is more than prepared to start the game in the green vest if it means he'll play his first final after 232 games.

"I'm not sure. I think that will be up to Damien – there might be a chance," he said.

"I'm not too sure how we'll structure up throughout the week.

"If that's the case then I'm happy to accept that."

Newman holds the record for the most games played without appearing in a final.

He admitted it wasn't ideal to have missed the past three games but the upside was the rest of his body was feeling fresh.

He also said he was "extremely confident" he had enough fitness behind him to cope with Sunday's intense encounter despite not playing since round 20.

"I've done a lot of training in rehab and, as people say when they're not playing, they have to work harder when they're in rehab to try and maintain that fitness," he said.

"My body feels good and I could have possibly played on the weekend, but we thought it was probably best to leave it for this week.

"It just enables [the ankle] to be 10 per cent better this week.

"I'm feeling really good and looking forward to training."

The Tigers are being told to embrace this week's excitement and hype, with coach Damien Hardwick emphasising the drought since the last time they played finals.

Development coach and former Port Adelaide premiership coach, Mark Williams, is also keen for the players to soak up the experience, which Newman said had already produced unexpected emotion.

"He's going to get us to pick up some turf and have a smell of the grass and all that sort of stuff," Newman said.

"It's different to what I thought I would feel; I thought I would have a huge sense of relief of something.

"It's certainly not that. I haven't felt that at all; it just feels like unfinished business and I can't wait to sink my teeth into what will be a great game on Sunday."
