2011 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships fixture

Round 1
Sunday May 29
6.30pm NT v WA - TIO Stadium

Just a reminder for those interested in watching the potential draftees coming through that the U18 Champs starts this weekend.

I might try and get to the ground early to see a little bit
The U18 game is on Sunday night WP. The Foxtel Cup game between NT Thunder and East Perth is the curtain raiser to our match on Saturday night.

Ooops mis-read that, that's what happens when your head is full of cold and thumping  :'(

making any effort in going to the pointless Foxtel Cup
Ex-Tigers Polak and Petts now play for East Perth. Not sure if they are playing in this game though. That's about the only interest from a Richmond viewpoint.

Actually watched the game, yep Polak, Petts & JON played for East Perth

NT Thunder had some kids who looked very impressive playing for them

It was pretty good game all up

Surprised the Thunder as a NEAFL side got so close. No wonder we would like Troy to join them to keep him in footy. Petts kicked 4. Sounds like he is kicking a few goals each week for the Royals.

WA hold off spirited NT
By Mark Macgugan
Mon 30 May, 2011

EYE-CATCHING performances by highly rated midfielders Jaeger O'Meara and Stephen Coniglio helped Western Australia overcome a spirited Northern Territory by 14 points in the opening match of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in Darwin on Sunday.

WA trailed for much of the game thanks to a combination of poor kicking for goal and some impressive play from its underdog opponent, but stepped up in the final quarter to run out 11.14 (80) to 9.12 (66) winners.

Behind by eight points at the final change after booting a wasteful 5.13 in the first three quarters, WA found range in the final term, piling on six goals to NT's two.

Coniglio, a tough and skilful midfielder tipped to be selected by Greater Western Sydney with one of its top picks in this year's NAB AFL Draft, booted two final quarter goals to put an exclamation mark on a fine individual display.

His on-ball partner O'Meara, a bottom-age player not eligible for the draft but a chance to be pre-selected by GWS and on-traded to another club, was equally impressive in the clinches.

Small forward/midfielder Shannon Taylor stepped up when the game needed to be won, kicking the first goal of the final quarter and proving instrumental in WA's strong finish.

Earlier, NT showed real character to bounce back from a scoreless opening quarter and play some outstanding free-flowing football through the middle part of the match.

Solidly built Tiwi Islands small forward Anthony Tipungwuti booted three goals for the home team and looked a constant threat, and Louis Egger impressed with his line-breaking run and ferocious attack on the ball.

After turning a 17-point quarter-time deficit into a three-point half-time lead it looked as though NT may cause a boilover, but the classy West Australians eventually ran over the top.

Northern Territory     0.0    4.5    7.9      9.12 (66)

Western Australia     2.5    3.8   5.13    11.14 (80)

GOALS
Northern Territory: Tipungwuti 3, Turner 2, Stafford 2, Collinson, Stokes

Western Australia: Williams 2, Coniglio 2, Peters 2, Hamling 2, Eardley, Taylor, O'Meara

BEST

Northern Territory: Egger, Tipungwuti, Collinson, Turner, R Smith, Wilson

U18 Champs - Players to watch (Age)
« Reply #19 on: June 01, 2011, 01:58:45 AM »
UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIPS - PLAYERS TO WATCH

Vic Metro: Jonathon Patton (Eastern Ranges, 18, 197cm, 95kg)
Strong, key forward with an appetite for contested marks and goals. Just keeps getting his hands to the ball from all sorts of awkward positions. Has rightly been likened to Jonathan Brown in style - he's big, bustling and inspires those around him. Headed to GWS, possibly as the No. 1 pick.

Vic Country: Todd Elton (Dandenong Stingrays, 18, 197cm, 83kg)
A marking tall, whose athleticism and versatility has put him in most key posts and even the ruck. Was overlooked by GWS as a 17-year-old signing last year, but has improved.

Western Australia: Stephen Coniglio (Swan Districts, 17, 182cm, 76kg)
Made his debut for Swan Districts last year, and starred throughout the finals series. A clever, classy midfielder who skips and glides over the ground, then turns on some breakaway pace. Another No. 1 and top-three contender, should he choose footy over a promising cricket career. Note: the "g" in his surname is silent.

South Australia: Chad Wingard (Sturt, 17, 181cm, 73kg)
Another skilful midfielder who is good in and outside the packs and makes things happen with his classy left foot, often resulting in goals for himself or others. Can take a nice high mark. Starred for SA last year when he was too young for the draft and has improved again.

Yep no potential big key defenders on the list  :-\. Looks like if we want a new key defender for 2012 we'll have to find one from one of the state leagues or trade for one. Alternatively wait a year and poach one via free agency.

SA too strong for QLD in U18s
By Jordan Laing
Sat 04 Jun, 2011

IMPRESSIVE performances by Chad Wingard and Lachie Neale helped steer South Australia to a 57-point victory over Queensland in the first round of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in Sydney on Saturday.

If it wasn’t for inaccurate kicking in front of goals, booting a combined 5.13 in the second and third quarters, South Australia could have added to its impressive 14.16 (100) to 6.7 (43) win.

Despite kicking the first goal, Queensland didn’t have the clean skills and goalkicking target up forward needed to cause the first upset of the championships.

Wingard, who gathered 20 possessions in a classy display, showed his versatility as a small forward, kicking two goals in a minute early in the third quarter. He looms as a likely target for GWS.

Prolific ball-winner Neale thrived on his opportunity at the national event, collecting 25 touches, including 16 contested, and was the spark SA needed after a slow start.

SA had eight individual goalkickers, led from the front by Sam Mayes who kicked four goals.

Clean skills from Jimmy Toumpas (17 touches and three tackles) helped him emerge as a potential player the Giants can use as a trade incentive. GWS can allocate up to four selections (players who turn 17 between January 1 and April 30) over the next two years to other clubs for players with experience and/or draft selections.

While QLD led for parts of the first quarter, they were no match for SA when its midfielders started to find plenty of the football.

Despite QLD only kicking two goals across the second and third terms, quick left-footer Peter Yagmoor battled hard, finding the footy 18 times, while Josh Wagner (14 possessions and nine tackles) was also prominent.

Queensland          2.3    3.4    4.5        6.7     (43)

South Australia    5.2    7.8    10.15    14.16 (100)

GOALS

Queensland: Oxley, Thurlow, Russ, Oxley, Cabrera, Starcevich

South Australia: Mayes 4, Carger 2, Wingard 2, Grigg 2, McDonough, Murdoch, Simpson, McDonough

BEST
Queensland: Yagmoor, Newell, Wagner, Joyce, Boston, Murphy
South Australia: Waldhuter, Raikiwasa, Grundy, Mayes, McKay, Wingard, Neale

Vic Metro demolish NSW/ACT
By Jordan Laing
6:50 PM Sat 04 Jun, 2011

VIC METRO has emerged as one of the teams to beat in this year’s NAB AFL Under-18 Championships following its 80-point victory over NSW/ACT in Sydney on Saturday.

Brandon Ellis and Samuel Frost were dominant for Vic Metro combining for 59 possessions and 15 marks to help lead the team from start to finish, winning 21.15 (141) to 9.7 (61).

NSW/ACT competed well and tackled hard but costly turnovers and inaccuracy in front of goal contributed to the big margin.

Vic Metro’s Dom Tyson was impressive in the midfield gathering 27 touches, while Xavier Richards, brother of Sydney Swan Ted, led his team with six tackles.

The smallest player on the field, Seb Gotch (172cm), was lively up forward, booting three goals to match the tally of teammate Jackson Paine.

NSW/ACT started slowly, conceding six of the first seven goals, and couldn’t get its way back into the contest from there.

There were some notable performances from NSW/ACT with Adam Flagg kicking three goals while midfielders Jackson Potter (21 disposals and six tackles) and Sam Milne (20 possessions) battled hard.

Defender Michael Hartley was equally impressive, nullifying the influence of Jonathon Patton, who is tipped to be an early selection in this year’s NAB AFL Draft.

In the end, Vic Metro was too skilful and consistent with its ball movement, running away with the game after half-time to claim its first win of the championships.

NSW/ACT  1.4    5.6    6.7        9.7     (61)
Vic Metro    6.3   11.5    17.6    21.15 (141)

GOALS

NSW/ACT: Flagg 3, Cummins, Moller, Johns, Moody, Guthrie, Breust

Vic Metro: Gotch 3, Paine 3, Atkins 2, Crozier 2, Frost 2, Tyson 2, Haynes, Greenwood, Wooffindin, Haynes, Tomlinson, Patton, Richards

BEST

NSW/ACT: Potter, Hartley, Witts, Flagg, Breust

Vic Country topples Tasmania
By Katrina Gill
Sun 05 Jun, 2011

A SEVEN-GOAL haul from forward Julian Dobosz wasn't enough to help Tasmania over the line in its clash with Vic Country in round one of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships at Bellerive Oval on Sunday.

Tasmania trailed by 46 points at three-quarter time but had the advantage of kicking to the 'scoring end', favoured by a strong breeze, in the final quarter.

The home team kicked the opening four goals of the final term to close to within 17 points but Vic Country steadied, kicking the last two goals of the game to run out 22-point winners.
