Early days I know but Crows recruiter Matt Rendell is equating this year's draft quality to that of 2009. The top 15 will be good players (although not as strong as 2010) but you won't find as many good kids in the 30s and 40s like last year.

On the 16 year old rule for GWS, existing clubs put in a bid into GWS and GWS just picks the best 4 bids whatever they are because they don't care what kids the existing clubs want.

Crows are going for a midfielder presumably with their first pick out of interest.

They said that about 2005 and it turned out to be a pretty good one (except for who we took)
Far too soon to call about 2009 also, the Top 4 look as good as any draft in history, plus Fyfe @ 20 and I'm sure more will come on in time

IT'S 20 weeks until the national draft but recruiters say the stars have already revealed themselves - here's Jay Clark's early tips for the top 10.

Eastern Ranges Key forward

STYLE: Jonathan Brown
Can take big pack marks but just as dangerous on the lead. Ideal forward-50m target.

2 Stephen Coniglio
Swan Districts Midfielder
HEIGHT: 182cm WEIGHT: 76kg
STYLE: Marc Murphy
Undecided whether he will nominate for the draft. Wins hard ball and uses speed to spread and create up forward.

3 Chad Wingard

Clubs already keen on class of 2012

NEXT year's national draft is shaping up as one of the best talent pools in a decade.

While Greater Western Sydney will dominate this year's early picks, it is next season's lot that is earning comparisons to the 2001 "super draft" that produced Luke Hodge, Luke Ball and Chris Judd.

A comparable bunch of future superstars is expected to emerge next year.

"This year there are probably about three four-star players but next year it looks like there will be about 10 five-star players," one recruiter said yesterday.

"Is it as good as 2001? It is looming as an absolute cracker, so if it's not, it won't be far off."

Another scout said: "Next year trumps this year's batch comfortably.

"This year there might a few wipe-outs if some clubs don't get the picks right, but there are going to be some superstars next year."

The 2012 draft will be the first in three years that will not be compromised by new clubs being given the majority of early picks.

Clubs entering the rebuilding phase already see it as a key opportunity.

Clubs fear draft depth for next crop of youngsters

THIS year's AFL national draft thins out so dramatically that some clubs might take only one or two selections.

Clubs scrutinising the November draft believe that after a dozen or so quality picks, it will quickly become a lottery where a player taken in the 50s might prove as good as a mid-teens selection.

AFL clubs must take three selections in every national draft, but they can choose to elevate rookies from their existing lists as part of that quota.

The struggling clubs are crying out for talented teenagers to boost their lists, but Greater Western Sydney has nine of the first 15 selections.

It means Brisbane and Port Adelaide will not be able to restock their lists with early selections, and instead will wait for next year's national draft, expected to include a bumper crop.

On present ladder order the only teams that will have access to a top 15 selection will be the Giants (picks No.1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15), Port Adelaide (No.4), Gold Coast (No.6), Brisbane (No., Richmond (No.10), Adelaide (No.12) and Western Bulldogs (No.14).

The premier will receive only pick No.26 with its first-round selection, which by that stage will be speculative.

With potential priority choices and Brisbane opting to use its end-of first round compensation selection, the premier's second-round pick will likely be in the late 40s.

It means clubs with plenty of elite talent will be unlikely to jettison too many from their lists, given new draftees are guaranteed a two-year contract.

Some clubs believe the draft could be as thin as in 2002, but others see opportunity.

They believe the draft's evenness after the early selections means they could eventually land a bargain with a second or third-round pick.

"At the start of the draft it is pretty good for a dozen or so picks, but it could be you get someone at pick 50 who is as good as the pick 15," one recruiter said.

Kavanagh missed champs. Is touted as top 5 on talent but injury plagued year will see him slide. Not sure how far but if we end up with pick 18 (think we will beat the Roos comfortably unless Harvey has 40+ and 3+ goals and Petire kicks a bag.

Brad McKenzie will be our man at first pick.
Would love us to take a punt on Waylan Manson as a KPF/Ruck at 2nd pick. Vickery to play number 1 ruck. With Griff/JR/Manson to play KPF.
and Steve Morris at 3rd round.
Rumour going on that Carl Peterson could be re-drafted after turning his life around. Was actually a top kid at draft time and moved to Melb and fell in with wrong crowd.

Elliot set on footy path

Elliot Kavanagh, Western Jets, 19 May 1993, 187cm, 78kg
 The mystery man of this year's draft. Didn't play a minute of football at the championships due to hamstring issues, but is a very highly-rated, quick onballer. One to watch out for in the latter stages of the TAC Cup.

Pick 4 – Gold Coast Suns
Elliot Kavanagh (Western Jets)
Ht: 187cm. Wt: 78kg
Kavanagh is the forgotten man of the top 10 due to hamstring and knee issues that restricted his availability with the Jets and Vic Metro. He has all the attributes clubs look for in a midfielder; he is pacy, uses the ball well, has quick hands and is smart. All he needs is a clear run with injury.
Inside Football top 12

Elliot Kavanagh is a highly rated young midfielder who we have seen very little of this year. Despite his absence from key games, Kavanagh fortunately has already shown us enough over his junior football career to get drafted and he has enough time left in the year to impress and push for a top 10 pick.
Kavanagh is one of the more complete midfielders in this draft. He uses the football well, has great decision making, has pace, works hard and can win his own football when required. If he hadn’t of spent much of this year injured I suspect I’d be talking about him in the same breath as Chad Wingard.
Recruiters loathe picking up players who have been injured in their draft year. As a result the club that does pick him up is likely getting a bargain, as long as they can get his body right, he’ll reward them.
