To me, a sporting club's logo is almost like it's fingerprint - it says a lot in a small single image about what the club stands for and how it sees itself.  And that is what I liked about the old logo, much more so than any other we have had in our past.  To me it said strong, traditional, dependable, fearless and solid, even if the performance hasn't been living up to that over the past years it still stamped the club with that message.  And now we have ditched that logo for one that (to me) puts us into the category of plastic, mickey mouse, fly-by-night.  I'm not a soccer fan but instantly I see the Gun logo I know that the club is Ar$enal (bloody swear filter) and that they have been a major sporting club for a long long time.  Same with the New York Yankees logo - they have only had 2 logos in their 100 year history and both of them are instantly recognizable the world over.  Even in corporate marketing-mad America they have kept their logo intact as a statement of who they are, how long they've been, and how they perceive themselves.  The club renowned as the biggest sporting club in the world - Manchester United - their logo remains constant year in, year out - there is no justification for them to meet the corporate marketing benchmark by regular change.  Actually, they make the benchmark meet them by their popularity and success, just the way it should be.  And to bring my message closer to home, I wonder why Collingwood or have felt no need to meet the market by changing their logo over the years?  There might have been a minor tweak over the years (I really don't know) but their basic Magpie logo has been the way it is now for the whole of my lifetime and Collingwood boast the most support and recognition of all AFL clubs Australia-wide.

I felt our old logo was the first one we had got right in our history and said everything I liked about our club.  It's a shame that as we approach an era of some level of success and heightened coverage/exposure that the club have felt the need to re-image themselves with a serious downgrade in appearance and message.  Damn shame really.

Spot on Smokey. This new logo is a joke, and the manner of introduction abhorrent. Where's the consultation with the key "stakeholder" - the members.
Can see through the retrospective justification from RFC_O as spin without content.
If RFC really want the 75k + members - engage us in a meaningful dialogue and dont be afraid of the reply !
Its not a Tiger its a cartoon pussy and a cheap rip off - and what does that say about the new RFC administration ?

settle down darth you're being ridiculous, the club employs people to make strategic decisions that cut across commercial operations and marketing. opening these types of decisions up to the peanut gallery would generally do more harm than good. Honestly what would most supporters know o0f marketing...from the general responses Ive waded through , NOT very much. The case for a NEW image is open and shut, acceptance of a NEW one will always be an arbitrary one...heck 10 people couldnt agree on a fav beer letalone a picture. what we need to lock onto is the catalyst for change and that is a horid period that the club is working hard to emerge from

The case for a NEW image is open and shut,

That is purely an opinion BJ, can you give any facts to support it?

I disagree, BJ.

I would have liked to see the club announce an intention to review the current logo and call for submissions from people of new logos.

I have heard of that being done before by other organisations and they attract the interest of many graphic design students looking to make a name for themselves.

You then throw the best ones up for a members vote, including the existing logo, and go from there, creating a buzz around the whole process and making people feel engaged.

You also save yourself several hundreds of thousands of dollars paying wankers to watch videos of Tigers in the wild.
Who isn't a fan of the thinking man's orange Tim Fleming?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

umm, the last 15 years havent been too good, we have achieved NOTHING but survive...we have little respect in the football community, the old Richmond has been subject to ridicule, embarrasment, scorn and humilation . I might be a little crazy but that sounds to me a decent sorta case for a reimage ::)

I wonder then if we should change our jumper as well?
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

It is the only way. We have been terrible for 30 odd years and we need a fresh start. We could not possibly be a great club with our old logo instead of the cat we have now :(
