Demons sack Bailey Caroline Wilson
July 31, 2011 - 9:06PM

Melbourne has reacted harshly to Saturday's humiliating loss to Geelong by sacking coach Dean Bailey.

The coach of almost four years learned at 8pm that he was finished with the club.

Assistant coach and former captain Todd Viney is hot favourite to step in for the remainder of the season.

The decision to terminate Bailey's contract came after a crisis meeting called by the board at around 5pm, held in the wake of 24 hours of political turmoil in the wake of the debacle against the Cats.

While Bailey was a direct casualty of the Skilled Stadium defeat he is expected to be followed soon by chief executive Cameron Schwab, whose position at the club has been tenuous for some months.

Bailey came to the club before Jim Stynes administration took over the club in the middle of the 2008 season and, with his contract ending at the end of this season, has been under pressure all year despite the club sitting only six points out of the eight.

No surprise. No coach could survive that 186 point annihilation. Bailey had obviously lost the players.

The coaching merry-go-around will get into full now with two jobs up for grabs.

Instability with no CEO, no footy manager and no coach might make him even more keen to leave.

I'am not a fan of sacking a coach the very next day after a big defeat. Yes the writing was on the wall but I would of liked to see them let him coach the year out.

now all they need is a list and know all from the media as coach.
I hope Lyon gets the job.

If Neil Craig hadn't quit they probably could've have held out till season end but with two jobs now up for grabs they probably felt the pressure of not wanting to miss out on all candidates available. Was it either Carlton sacking Pagan or Essendon sacking Sheedy 5 years ago as soon they heard Voss put out there publicly he was considering being a senior coach only for Voss to change his mind after the sacking(s)?

They could of just said they will be looking for a new coach and won't be resigning Bailey at seasons end. That would of put the ball in his court to leave now or coach till end of the season. It wouldn't of effected there future decisions. Unless they want to get a good look at Viney(guessing he takes over) in the job.

Which begs the question only a big fish that has a huge ego bigger than the club would want to go there or an untried coach like Spud when he came to us. Not a good position for a footy club to be in with the shape of their list. Could be more goings when others may be out of contract 12 months from now if things are not done right after this round of sackings.

At the same time as I am laughing now could easily be us in 12 months time if we don't play our cards right on and off the field.

The club's weekend of turmoil came days after a group of senior players visited their ailing president, Jim Stynes, and outlined a list of concerns over the internal workings of the club.

That is very poor of the players if they wanted Bailey gone and so it effected them not giving 100% effort in on saturday against the cats.

Regardless what it is. It still is a 186 point loss in the record books and on the records of those 22 players who played. Terrible from all of them. Makes me feel so much better as a Richmond supporter knowing our crap is not as crappy as theirs. :lol :rollin :lol

I actually feel for Dean Bailey. Regardless as what type of coach he is/was he did not deserve this on his record.
Even Fitzroy in 1996 were not a 31 goal worse side than anyone else let alone a side this year.

seems to to a bit of synergy there doesn't there?

reading that article it seems more so than ever that lyon is putting his two bobs worth in and trying to influence things, but not willing to do so from a position of responsibility.

shows a lot of character, that.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."
