Richmond close to full-strength for final practice match

Richmond will have almost a complete list to pick from for this weekend's practice match against Brisbane at Optus Oval [Ed. Saturday 2pm].

Small forward David Rodan has undergone reconstructive surgery on his right knee, to repair a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament though it is currently unknown how long he will be out of action for, while Jay Schulz is 6 to 8 weeks from fully recovering from an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, the Tigers announced today the club currently has 20,374 ticketed members for season 2005.

Although you'd think we'll play nearly a full strength side in our last practice match I wonder if we'll rest a number of blokes who played in the Alice heat and humidity ??

I would expect the Tiges to field close to their strongest side as well as using the maximum number on the interchange for those who are borderline selections in round 1.

Depending on what Brisbane do (and they seem to have a lot of blokes injured) I reckon this will be a good test. The one thing that the Lions have in truckloads is strength and because of that I think it will be good guage to see where a lot of our younger blokes in a "physical strength" sense (if that makes sense) - e.g. making tackles, breaking tackles

Must say I am looking forward to a Saturday afternoon at the footy in Melbourne even if it is a Princes Park

Matthew Richardson will be given his chance to press his claims for the Richmond captaincy when he leads the Tigers in Saturday's Wizard Regional Challenge match against Brisbane at Optus Oval.

The big spearhead will be the fourth and last candidate to lead the club during the pre-season after Joel Bowden captained the Tigers during their Wizard Cup loss to Collingwood while Kane Johnson and Nathan Brown led the club during its practice matches against Essendon and Fremantle over the past fortnight.

Richardson, who turns 30 on the weekend prior to the start of the home and away season, is by far the oldest of the four candidates with the other three all either 27 or turning 27 this season.

And while the nine time leading goalkicker and three time best and fairest runner-up would be a popular choice with Richmond fans, he is unlikely to win the job full-time - regardless of how he performs on Saturday.

The Tigers are expected to announce their new captain early next week with the job expected to be given to either Johnson or Bowden with Johnson believed to be the favourite due to his strong support from within the Richmond playing group.

Richmond football manager Paul Armstrong however said the club had "definitely not" already made up its mind on who would succeed Wayne Campbell as skipper.

"We haven't made any decision yet but we will decide over the weekend and then announce it to the playing group," he said.

Armstrong said 2003 best and fairest winner Mark Coughlan - who at just 22 is already been viewed as a future Richmond captain - had pulled up well following his comeback from groin problems against Fremantle in Alice Springs last Friday.

"He played the majority of the game and he will probably play the full game on Saturday," he said of Coughlan, who managed just seven games last year.

"But he is still a bit behind the others in terms of games (played) so it will probably be five or six weeks before he is fully match-fit."

The Tigers will also regain exciting draft choice Richard Tambling on Saturday after he missed the past two matches with hamstring soreness while a host of senior players that were rested for the trip to Alice Springs will also return including Richardson, Campbell, Johnson, Chris Newman, Chris Hyde, Troy Simmonds, Mark Graham and number one draft pick Brett Deledio.

The clash against Brisbane is the Tigers' last official practice match before the start of the home and away season although the club will also play a "probables v possibles" match at Punt Road during its family day on March 18.

Richmond will use this Saturday’s practice match against Brisbane at Optus Oval as a full dress rehearsal for the opening round of the 2005 premiership season.

The Tigers intend taking their best available 22 into the clash with last year’s runner-up.

“The players were told the selected side early in the week, so that we could get ourselves properly prepared,” said Richmond’s coach Terry Wallace.

“I think you need to pick your best 22 at this stage, so that they can get sufficient ground time, and so they knew exactly where they sit in terms of selection for Round 1.

“We expect Brisbane to have a relatively full squad available, so it should be a pretty good hit-out for us on Saturday afternoon.”

While the pre-season grand final is to be decided tonight, this afternoon's Richmond versus Brisbane Lions practice match at Optus Oval has assumed a big-game feel of its own.

The Lions might argue they have nothing to prove in the pre-season, despite bringing a list containing 16 grand final players from 2004, but Richmond coach Terry Wallace yesterday made no bones about the importance of a good showing for his young, rebuilt side.

Naming a squad he described as the "best 24" - excluding injuries, and the likes of Greg Stafford and Daniel Jackson, who were regular senior players last season - the Tigers are hoping "to see where we are at" against the competition powerhouse.

So far, the unpredictable pre-season competition, in which Richmond lost to Collingwood in a game it should have won, then thumped an undermanned Essendon and nudged out an equally undermanned Fremantle by two points, has been good for match practice but not a realistic indicator of where the club sits in relation to the best teams in the competition.

"They have 16 premiership players coming down, so as I said to them, if they are prepared to have a bit of a go at the game, they will get a bit of an indication of where they are at," Wallace said after his side had a sharp hitout at Punt Road Oval.

"It is significant, it's a full dress rehearsal. We've got half-a-dozen blokes playing with Coburg who would think they were probably pretty unlucky in that they'd like to think they are still up for selection. This is really our best indicator of whether they can step up against better opposition or not."

Although early in Wallace's tenure, he is pleased that a depth seems to have developed, despite the club turning over half its list in two seasons. "I have got no doubt there is some depth developing. Obviously, we are disappointed to lose two, with (Jay) Schulz and David Rodan, (but) I don't think blokes will get a game this year when they are not worthy of a game," he said.

Another area of improvement for the Tigers' list has been in the size of bodies. One of Wallace's key initiatives has been to ensure recruits develop bigger and more powerfully built frames.

The Lions have added six of their best to the squad for today's game.

Skipper Michael Voss, vice-captains Justin Leppitsch and Luke Power, 200-gamer Chris Scott, triple-premiership ruckman Clark Keating and impressive youngster Anthony Corrie have been included in a group that already boasts an in-form Jason Akermanis, Mal Michael and Daniel Bradshaw.

Big Lions names still recovering from injury are Jonathan Brown (knee), Jamie Charman (knee), Simon Black (shoulder/ankle), Beau McDonald (knee) and Nigel Lappin (knee).
