In pre-season 2012 the format will be:

ROUND ONE (starting on February 17 and spread across two weekends): All 18 teams divided into six pools of three. There will be a round-robin series of "20-20" games of two 20-minute halves.

ROUNDS TWO AND THREE: Each club be drawn to play a standard four-quarter match on each weekend. Opponents and venues will be known when the draw is released. Each club will be guaranteed at least one game on an official AFL venue.

ROUND FOUR: The two teams with the best win-loss records and percentages will play in the NAB Cup grand final on Friday, March 16 or Saturday, March 17. The other 16 teams will be allocated trial games.

I think North want to play one of their Tassie home games against us in Hobart.

Hmmm, so I wonder whether that means all games in weeks 2 and 3 will be televised since they are all now NAB Cup matches?

We have more of a connection with Tasmania than the roo's so we might even get more supporters then them at the game.

It's a bit harder to get excited about a visit to Hobart in the middle of winter to watch a game than it is to visit Cairms.  Both places will be pretty windy, but I'll vote for the home game in the tropics ahead of the away game in the antarctic.

For the commercial people it is all about exposure for the brand and the sponsors. Friday nights and Saturday nights are better for corporate sales than afternoon games. The home game draw is important, as well. Home games against Collingwood in particular, but also Carlton, Essendon and Geelong will mean good crowds. Gold Coast, the Giants, Port Adelaide and Fremantle, not so much.

Which team is the AFL bullish about? In 2011, the Friday night schedule was full of Carlton games with the League correctly backing in the Blues to be the form team of the competition. Who gets the nod in 2012? Perhaps the Hawks, or perhaps the Demons. Will North receive what it feels is a long overdue increase in its Friday night allotment?

This just shows that it won't be until we start winning regularly that we'll get a favourable draw both on and off-field from the AFL.
