League chief operating officer Gillon McLachlan said the powerhouse sides would get the lion's share of the Friday and Saturday night blockbusters.
"I think it's a reality - and it's not a new one - that teams in the top half of the ladder, the best teams, will get a disproportionate share of the marquee slots," McLachlan said.
"That's cyclical.
"I remember, probably about five years ago, when Carlton and Hawthorn were complaining.
"The had seven or eight free to air games, they couldn't get on Friday night, and they were down the bottom of the ladder.
"You'll find this year that Hawthorn and Carlton are a dominant force in the free to air fixture."
