MELBOURNE forward Liam Jurrah is being held in custody in an Alice Springs jail following an incident involving a machete.

Melbourne officials are desperately trying to find out details, but have been able to confirm that Jurrah is one of two men in custody.

Jurrah was last week released by the Demons to return home to the Northern Territory to deal with some family issues.

The club has released the following statement:

"The club has been advised that Liam Jurrah, who is currently on personal leave to deal with family and community issues in Central Australia, is being held by police following an incident overnight. No charges have been laid.

"We are not aware of any further information and therefore not in a position to make comment at this time."

He has been sidelined with a wrist injury throughout the pre-season.

Melbourne also confirmed that Jurrah was in custody and that no charges had been laid.

"We are not aware of any further information and, therefore, not in a position to make comment at this time," the Demons said in a statement.

The Demons are expected to send a club official to Alice Springs soon.

Alice Springs police are investigating whether there is a link between the incident involving Jurrah and another that happened near Alice Springs around the same time.

"We are not aware of any further information and therefore not in a position to make comment at this time."

Northern Territory police attended a disturbance at Little Sisters Town Camp on the outskirts of Alice Springs overnight.

"On arrival police found a 35-year-old man with serious head injuries alleged to have been inflicted by a machete," a police spokesperson told the AFL website.

"Two men aged 23 years are currently in police custody with investigations continuing."

It is not known if Jurrah was responsible for any injuries to the man or if he was directly involved.

The incident followed an earlier stabbing of a young man in an Alice Springs car park. A 30-year-old woman is in custody in relation to the incident.

Jurrah has been sidelined with a wrist injury throughout the pre-season.

If he does come back to Melbourne would there be any chance of him playing before his court hearing?

Sylvia, Jurrah, and Moloney are in a pub. Sylvia says to Moloney "Hey, where's Jurrah? It's his shout!"

Moloney: "Oh, he's just ducked out for a slash"

He is facing court to day so it depends on whether he gets bail or not

Before this happened he wasn't going to be ready for the start of the season because the bone in his wrist hadn't healed properly and he (Jurrah) had needed more surgery on it.

Neeld was adamant that as result of that he had to come back via the VFL.

So you'd think if he gets bail and gets back to Melb then he'd still be a late starter to the season

Has there been any word out of AFL house about this yet? Will he be able to still play AFL(before his court hearing) if his injuries and form permit him to do so.

LIAM Jurrah has been ordered to return to Melbourne immediately and abstain from alcohol after a court heard he was drunk when he picked up a machete during a fight.

A police prosecutor told the Alice Springs court that Jurrah was affected by alcohol when he armed himself with a machete.

The prosecutor said Jurrah was accompanied by another man who was armed with an axe.

The prosecutor said the pair were at a local town camp when a fight erupted.

In a police interview, Jurrah denied any involvement in the fight.

He boarded a flight for Melbourne this afternoon after he was ordered to leave Alice Springs during the court hearing earlier in the day. He cannot return until it is time to face the court.

Prior to that time he must report to a Melbourne police station twice a week and abstain from alcohol.

Jurrah has been charged with unlawfully causing serious injury and being armed with an offensive weapon. Bail was set at $3000.

The original three charges have been rolled into two.
