AFL's all-clear for MCG turfBy Ashley Browne
Tue 17 Apr, 2012THE ARTIFICIAL turf surrounding the MCG playing surface has been given a clean bill of health, following a series of tests conducted by the AFL on Monday.
Concerns were raised on Saturday after Melbourne's Jack Grimes and Richmond's Daniel Jackson twice clashed with each other outside the boundary line.
Grimes was booked for a sling tackle after the first incident, and was then helped from the ground after the second clash when his head slammed into the artificial turf.
The League applied the Clegg Hammer test to gauge the softness of the artificial turf at both the MCG and Etihad Stadium on Monday and found both surfaces to meet acceptable standards.
The artificial turf was introduced around the MCG perimeter at the start of last season and runs from two metres outside the boundary line to the fence. It was installed after consultation with, and to the standards required by the ground's two main tenants - the AFL and Cricket Australia. It is also compliant to the standard required by FIFA.
