We need Jack to step up: Houliabc.net.au
Updated May 07, 2012 13:02:16Bachar Houli believes team-mate Jack Riewoldt to lead the Tigers to finals footy.Bachar Houli says Richmond need Jack Riewoldt to repeat Sunday's four-goal performance on a regular basis if the Tigers are to achieve a top-eight finish.
After playing well in defeat the previous two weeks the Tigers secured their second victory of the season in a dominating victory over Port Adelaide at Football Park.
Riewoldt, who had been much-criticised after a slow start to the campaign, put in a dominating display and Houli feels this needs to be his benchmark from now on.
"We need Jack to step up for us to get somewhere and go further into the top eight," Houli said on Grandstand Breakfast.
"Also Ty Vickery - we're relying on these tall forwards to give us options and kick goals for us.
"It's been good to see Jack in the next two weeks stepping up where we need him and he's been quite positive about his approach.
"Players like that can drop their confidence. Jacks been great and the club is all supportive of him."
Houli has established himself as a key player at Richmond after a frustrating four years at Essendon when he made just 26 appearances.
The attacking defender, who turns 24 this week, puts his emergence down to the support of coach Damien Hardwick and his fellow players.
"I've come in the programme and been given the confidence by Damien and the playing group," Houli said. "They've given me confidence to play relaxed footy.
"That's made me really confident in the way I approach my football.
"All players make errors in games and when I do make an error I'm feeling really confident.
"When I was in Essendon I would be down on myself and thinking at the back of my mind as soon as I make an error, I'll be dropped next week.
"When I do make an error I'm always looking to rectify."
Houli also praised the contribution of Ivan Maric who he feels has given the Tigers' midfield the platform to shine.
"It just goes to show when you've got an elite ruckman doing his work not only in the ruck but around the ground where the team can be," Houli said.
"Our midfield are working extremely hard with Ivan and obviously the combination is working really well."
