Agree with the good coach, people somehow don't think contested marking is difficult to do?
It's got to be the hardest and most valuable skill in the game -even today's game
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

Griffiths would make a good CHF

if he could take a contested mark
if he could play a whole game
if he was fit enough to present
if we could find a better kick from full back
if he could play out a whole season

Cloke will make a good CHF

if he puts on a Richmond jumper.

A lot of sense in this post.

I have heard a lot about how Griffiths, Post, Vickery, Astbury and Elton are going to be the MAN but in reality all are still just young talls in development. Probably 3 in 5 won't even make it.
We need a seasoned player to take the weight and let those guys develop without carrying the load.

Cloke's recruitment makes a lot of sense to me. We need some muscle.

Merrett. Gun full back. Lions have the luxury of playing him forward

Luxury?   :huh

Staker and Goose werent playing + other solid players. Are you saying Staker and Maguire couldn't hold down a KPD spot (along with Patful down there) to release Merrett up forward? If so, why has Merrett played forward most of the year? And didn't you say he was an average player earlier in the season  :allears

Griffiths does need to get on top of injuries but he certainly has time on his side. He has shown he can roost the ball 70m+ with a straight kick and is certainly a excellent contested mark but hasn't shown this in his present role as a spoiler. On curent form there is no comparison between the two - Cloke has the runs on the board but the reality is is that 1) Cloke is unlikely to leave the Pies, 2) he will cost us a cool $1 mill and 3) he has a Dad who is an interfering git.

Griffiths is 1) already wearig a Richmond jumper  ;D

I really think this argument is a waste of time - he's unlikely to go anywhere but if he comes to Tigerland I won't be complaining.

Has Griff showed his excellent contested marking in Richmond or Coburg games? I don't think he has yet. If Griff is a great CM then so is Benny Nason. I'm hoping BG has a great pre-season and plays CHF next year (unless we bring home Clokey) but by stuff are his injuries annoying

Ok, one by one:

So there weren't any other "solid" players playing on Sat night then?  In my books that doesn't equate to "luxury".

I didn't mention Staker or MacGuire as they were not playing and irrelevant to my point, and I noticed Patfull's 12 possession game earned him a mention in SEN's Bottom 5.  A "luxury" you say?

Merret has played forward because Voss has been bereft of ideas and talent up forward while Brown was missing.  1740 points against for the season thus far does not scream "luxury" of defensive riches to me.

No, I never ever said he was average.  Here are my 3 quotes on him:

"Merrett is overrated."

"I don't think his output or results have been near as impressive since the Lions slid down the ladder.  He was partially made look good by a very good team and is now struggling to have the same impact as he did a few years back.  A good ordinary defender imho."

"I still think his best football is past him and was in part due to the quality of players around him back then.  He might regain that form in another good side but he is now injury prone and approaching 30.  An unacceptable risk at the cost to our club but again, only my opinion."

And nothing that I have seen since writing that has given me cause to change my mind, especially Sat night watching him get his 11 possessions live against our undermanned and out of sorts forward line.  If ever an opportunity presented itself to an elite defender then Sat night was it but all I saw was what I had earlier opined above.

re Patfull; Did you bag Gaspar when he didn't rack up big numbers :lol Since when has a defenders game been about disposals? As 65' would say "honestly, WGAF?" Shutting down your man is your first priority.

"I didn't mention Staker or MacGuire as they were not playing and irrelevant to my point"
What point? You didn't make any. I said Brisbane have had the luxury of using Merrett as a forward because they have other options down back. You replied with "Luxury?"...........So do you think Brisbane have had the luxury of using him forward or not? Goose pulled out against us so he had to go down back. In a lot of other games they have been able to use him forward. Like that game where the dud bagged 8

Was never a big Gaspar fan so probably not the best example to bring up.  Too dodgy in his execution for mine, even though he achieved AA one year I never rated him as high as that, and his subsequent years tended to lean to my way of thinking.  FWIW I am a believer in the "best method of defence is attack" theory and I can't abide it when defenders (and we have a cultural mortgage on this) invite pressure back into their zone and onto themselves and the team by propping, stopping and looking backwards instead of referring the pressure upfield to a more neutral zone.  That's why I do place importance on disposal stats for a defender, just as I place importance on defensive stats for a forward - they are both critical to a team's success.

My point was exactly as you said it - what luxury?  I thought I had made that obvious with my reply but I will say it again, I don't think Brisbane have any such luxury of being able to play Merrett forward.  They are robbing Peter to pay Paul and that can only ever end up in tears.  Remind me again how well this has worked for them this year?  His 7 goal game was in a 92 point mauling of GWS - do you really want to put that up there as proof of your point?  Bloody hell, Mopsy and I would have shared 10 between us that day.  In his debut year of 2005 he played predominately as a forward and kicked 13 goals in 15 games.  Between then and last season he played 98 games mainly as a defender and kicked 4 goals.  This season, with Brown out and Voss desperately trying to hang on to his coaching career he has played 18 games between forward and back and kicked 26 goals.  Not a bad return but the pay off has been in the profuse defensive bleeding and at some point you always have to pay the ferryman for the ride.  Luxury?  No, I don't believe so.
