Rance was a pup back then who'd get beaten in the air by a one armed midget

You're just bitter because he left your beloved Port...

Callum Moore
Calder Cannons

Height: 193 cm
Weight: 85 kg
Position: Key position utility
Strengths: Athleticism, contested marking, workrate
Weaknesses: Kicking, football IQ
Player comparison: Tom Lynch (Adelaide)
First year impact: Long-term prospect

Kicking: Below average
Marking: Elite
Endurance: Average
Speed: Above average

Statistics:
Calder Cannons (TAC Cup) – seven games, 9.3 kicks, 4.3 handballs, 13.6 disposals, 56.8 per cent efficiency, 3.8 marks, 1.6 tackles, 1.6 goals

Vic Metro (under 18 championships) – four games, 6.5 kicks, 1.8 handballs, 8.3 disposals, 58.8 efficiency, 4 marks, 1.3 tackles, 1 goal

A talented junior basketballer, Moore only played five TAC Cup games in his underage year in 2014 after a late call up to the Cannons squad from the EDFL, but that was enough to have the Swans come calling prior to the rookie draft. Though they ultimately chose others in that draft, the sheer fact that the beaten grand finalists of that year were very keen on the young man gives an indication of the potential that AFL clubs see in the 193-centimetre tall that moves like a midfielder.

His sheer athleticism is truly something to behold in a big man, with his pace across the ground making him a handful for opposition big men, and his size proving a serious obstacle for smalls when he is shifted onto the ball. When combined with his genuinely spectacular contested marking ability and unearthly leap, Moore projects as a genuinely exciting prospect as a lead-up forward or a marking target across half forward and through the middle, with the ability to be dangerous as a third man up in ruck contests around the ground.

What is holding him back from being able to play early in his career is his low football IQ. Not surprisingly for a young bloke who didn’t concentrate solely on football until comparatively late, and one who has yet to settle into a particular role, his leading patterns and movement off the ball need work. His attack on the ball at this point in time is heavily weighted toward a ‘see ball, get ball’ approach, and more than you would like it results in him leading his man to a contest where he might be better off creating space.

The elephant in the room however is his kicking. Whilst it is generally acceptable, Moore is also capable of the kind of drop punt that would make Levi Casboult blush, as a couple of shots at goal in the heartstopping win for Vic Metro over SA illustrated, and that area of his game needs a drastic overhaul. The good news however is that it appears to be mechanical rather than mental, and the raw talent is there, so it is something a club will be willing to work with him on.

In a lot of ways, Moore’s breathtaking athleticism, great hands and sometimes atrocious kicking brings to mind former Adelaide cult hero Nick Gill, and should he be luckier with injuries, there is no reason to suggest that Moore can’t also make it in the AFL.

Tigers press conference

TROY Chaplin the forward? Brendon Lade thinks yes.

Assistant coach Lade, in the hot seat for Richmond’s NAB Challenge opener against Fremantle in Mandurah yesterday, predicted Chaplin’s forward-line experiment would continue this season.

The usual key defender looked far from out of place when given his chance in the first half, bagging a goal with a clever rove and snap to prove he’s capable at both ends.

Lade said Richmond’s need for more attacking options could see the former Port Adelaide player up the other end of the ground more often, especially with fellow backman David Astbury enjoying a brilliant pre-season.

“He gave us something a bit different Chappy,” Lade said.

“He competed really hard and kicked a nice right-foot goal, (he) went back there in the last quarter as well and did some things.

“We’re still looking for one of those key forwards to step up and he’s done some good things over the pre-season.

“We know he can play back but he’s also shown he can play forward, for us it’s about having that extra flexibility now there’s more rotations so he’ll play at both ends.”

It was always going to be an uphill battle for the Tigers with stars Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt and Alex Rance among others, and the 14.6 (90) to 4.6 (30) loss reflected that.

But Lade felt there were still plenty of positive performances from his first, second and third-year players.

“Corey Ellis showed a few little things, first-year player Mabior Chol did some exciting things up forward,” Lade said.

“We had a few good players go through a lot of areas, (mature-aged recruit) Nathan Broad played his first game of AFL.”

On next Saturday’s clash with three-time defending champs Hawthorn, Lade expects a full-strength side to take the field barring injuries at training.

“I think we’ll be pretty much at full strength and ready to have a crack,” he said.

Ty Vickery and Ben Griffiths are both in doubt to face the Hawks due to concussion.

In the Fremantle camp, coach Ross Lyon said small forward Hayden Ballantyne’s left hamstring injury was “really minor”, and expected him to be fit for Round 1 against Western Bulldogs on March 27.

Ballantyne will be interviewed by the AFL’s integrity unit next week after vision emerged of him using a mobile phone in the rooms during the match.

An AFL spokesman last night confirmed use of mobile phones by players was strictly prohibited.

Anyone got Chaplin's stats at kicking for goal?
One would assume that moving him forward would have some stats to justify it?
Personally i can only remember him kicking that 1 goal against the Power back in 2014 at etihad.
I have no doubt he can probably do an "ok" job with regards to getting to the right position and short passing, but my concern is that he marks 45 out on an angle and can't finish the job we need that type of fwd player to do.

14.9 in a twelve year career to date. He's kicked 4.2 for us in his 3 years at Punt Rd.

Chaplin did pinch hit as a CHF in his U18 days (way back in 2003) but mainly played CHB. 6 goals in 14 TAC Cup games.
