Luke Beveridge says cuts to football department staff make curtain-raisers the only feasible way to give fringe AFL players match practice when football resumes.

Beveridge said small-sided games or competitive training sessions against opponents on game day shaped as a solution.

Momentum is building towards the creation of a new 14-team AFL eastern seaboard reserves competition that would potentially replace the VFL and NEAFL, according to club chiefs.

A new league tying the four clubs in Queensland and New South Wales with the 10 Victorian clubs that would serve as a reserves development competition was shaping as a viable alternative to the problems of the existing second-tier format, according to Swans chief executive Tom Harley.

Curtain-raisers back? AFL gives clubs the green light to organise scratch matches

By Marc McGowan
afl.com.au
3 June 2020

The AFL has given free rein to clubs to organise scratch matches between themselves from next week.

Teams will have the option to hold these games as curtain-raisers or curtain-closers to senior fixtures, and they must be played at AFL-approved venues.

AFL.com.au understands League football operations manager Steve Hocking informed the 18 clubs on Wednesday of the conditions for interclub match practice between rounds two and five.

AFL umpires are not available to officiate these games, and it's believed the teams involved will instead need to allocate staff approved to make contact with players to serve as umpires.

This also means the footballers involved won't be subject to typical tribunal guidelines and can't be suspended, a policy that will rely on good faith between the competing clubs.

Club officials will need to lodge their game request with the AFL at least one week before the scheduled hitout, and they can only face teams based in the same state.

That leaves the 10 Victorian clubs to organise contests between them, with the AFL's preference being that they fall in line with the premiership season fixture where possible.

The length of quarters and number of players on each team can be mutually agreed upon between the two parties on a weekly basis.

This is important, given the likelihood of uneven playing numbers from club to club, because of injuries and other factors.

In extreme scenarios, clubs could even pool players together with rivals to stage a match in the case of mass injuries or a desire to play a game closer to normal circumstances.

As with AFL games, the practice matches will be closed to the public.

The Magpies and Tigers will kick off the season restart at the MCG on Thursday night.

A spokesperson told AFL.com.au that MCG chiefs were yet to be contacted about a potential curtain-raiser on top of the senior game.

Richmond assistant coach Justin Leppitsch said it was important to have something in place for footballers who weren't playing AFL matches.

"As an industry, we'll look to somehow give those boys some games going forward," Leppitsch said.

"We're not sure how that looks at the moment but it's going to be a challenge to keep the match fitness up for the guys who don't play AFL."

The article also says we won't be able to have a scratch match in round 5 for our reserve players given the game is interstate.

I just read with interest that the non selected players would be having a scratch match prior to main game.

Would be great to be able to see these players development and I hope the club records it and makes it available to the supporters

Due to our long injury list and resulting lack of players, our ressies are playing in a combined Tigers/Demons/Bombers side versus Carlton's ressies.

Scratch Match Player Summary

Scratch match player summary

By Richmond Media

Five Richmond players joined forces with players from Melbourne and Essendon to take on Carlton in a scratch match on Friday afternoon on the Gold Coast.

Oleg Markov, Sydney Stack, Riley Collier-Dawkins, Jack Ross and Callum Coleman-Jones all featured in the 16 v 16 game, which comprised of three 20-minute periods.

The combined team, dubbed the Rich-bourne Bombers, got the win over the Blues.

While Richmond VFL coach Xavier Clarke admitted it was quite a bizarre set-up, he said it was a valuable opportunity for a solid hit-out, in what was the Tigers' first scrimmage since arriving on the Gold Coast.

"We tried to get our boys in their positions to get what we needed out of it," he said.

"We weren’t going to get exactly the game we wanted in terms of playing our system, but the priority was getting a game into those players so they can get some match conditioning.

"The philosophy of the game was just to get a hit-out which we got."

Clarke’s summary of how the Tigers’ players performed:

Oleg Markov

"Oleg was one who really stood out. He played across half back and did really well. His run and carry caught my eye."

Sydney Stack

"'Stacky' had time in the midfield and did some really good things in offence when he got the ball in his hands. He looked really lively around stoppages and contests which was great and did some good high-speed running."

Jack Ross

"'Rossy' played through the midfield and he did some really good things around getting the ball in his hands."

Riley Collier-Dawkins

"Played through the midfield. He kicked a really nice goal where he had three or four bounces down the wing and ran all the way until he was around 20 metres out and kicked the goal."

Callum Coleman-Jones

"Had some moments of playing to his strengths. He played ruck and went forward and kicked two goals which was good for him."

No Dow?

Interesting to see if we bring any of these 5 in or were those like Dow who didn't play 'rested' for Wed night?
