Thanks CT.

VFL Tigers pipped at the post by Blues

By Brenton Mann
Richmond Media
16 March 7pm

Richmond went down to Carlton by five points in Thursday's curtain-raiser practice match at the Swinburne Centre.

Both sides showed why they look to be in for a fruitful season; however, the Blues edged passed their hosts late in the final term to secure the comeback win.

Carlton set up its win with a seven-goal third term and iced it with four goals in the last quarter, the final score reading 12.14 (86) to 12.9 (81).

Richmond led by as much as six goals throughout the game and by two goals in the dying minutes.

The Tigers were forced to defend for large portions of the opening eight minutes.

They then slingshot the ball from the northern end through link and dare, as well as adherence to role, as Samson Ryan provided the aerial power and Lachlan Johnson the class for the first goal of the evening.

Misilifi Faimalo’s proved to be a human battering ram, after a sensational tackle in the first quarter.

Faimalo stormed onto the ground, weaved his way through traffic and steamrolled his navy-blue counterpart and was justly rewarded with a free-kick for incorrect disposal. After finding space inside 50, he then coolly slotted Richmond’s second major.

Ryan proved a strong focal point and was rewarded late in the quarter with his opening goal, following a forward-50 intercept by Judson Clarke.

The Tigers looked most damaging when the ball was in constant motion and were able to get in behind the Carlton defensive unit to create dangerous space and capitalise.

Noah Cumberland was energetic and industrious forward of centre, sinking his left foot into the Sherrin for the first goal of the second term, moments after the restart.

Kaelan Bradtke used his tall frame to his advantage, positioning it between the goal mouth and his Carlton defender to clutch a strong contested mark and kick truly for Richmond’s fifth.

The Blues hit back soon after via the right boot of Paddy Dow, before crafty forward Harrison White was found on the lead by Angus Hicks.

White has been in goalkicking form this pre-season and carried that into this clash, easing through his set-shot on a 45-degree angle.

Ryan took his goal tally to two for the first half, with a classy goal from the paint of 50.

The emerging key forward was sent across Yarra Park to the MCG after the first half as a precautionary carryover for the AFL clash.

Hugo Ralphsmith was his bounding self off half-back, and had company with first-year Tiger, Steely Green riding shot gun.

Green's determination certainly matches his name, as he continually mopped up any loose ball in his vicinity, sending it back Richmond’s way.

The Tigers took a 35-point lead into the main break as the faithful started to line the fences.

Tyler Sonsie opened the third term like he was shot out of a cannon, willing himself from contest-to-contest, showcasing his quick hands and mind.

Carlton made inroads on the scoreboard after half-time, slamming on four goals on the trot in ten minutes, slicing the margin to 13 points.

Ralphsmith, Sonsie and Clarke fought and scrapped on the half-forward flank to win the ball back off the Blues, with Clarke caressing the ball to Fraser Elliot in the corridor.

Elliot was escorted inside-50 following a 50-metre penalty and slotted the goal against the tide.

Thomson Dow exuded the presence of a fourth-year midfielder, adding his name to the scoresheet with Richmond’s ninth goal - its second consecutive from a 50-metre penalty.

Dow has rubber-band like agility in traffic, which he’s now coupled with a frame that allows him to remain on his feet, even after heavy contact.

Carlton ended the quarter as it started, with three-goal burst, shrinking the margin to just three points by the final change.

Dow, of the Blue variety, jagged his fourth goal swiftly in the last quarter, handing Carlton a three-point lead.

Richmond answered back immediately after some intelligent crumbing by Faimalo, which led to White snapping his second.

Sam Banks burnt his own track on the wing last year and went about the same on Thursday, ever-present in assisting the Tigers’ defensive unit or driving the ball deep into attack.

Banks was shifted back in the last quarter, as the Tigers fought tooth and nail to grab back the lead.

Richmond will take valuable learnings from its final practice match, as it opens its season next Sunday, March 26 against the Northern Bullants at the Swinburne Centre from 12.00pm.

RICH 3.3 7.5 9.8 12.9 (81)

CARL 0.4 1.6 8.11 12.14 (85)

Now entering his second season as captain and fifth overall, Street continues to lead the way for the young Richmond VFL squad. The big-bodied utility is invaluable with his ability to have an impact anywhere on the ground. He will be eyeing off the 50 VFL game milestone in 2023.

No. 56 Harrison White

A crafty half forward/outside runner with speed and class from Werribee Football Club. Harry has moved to an AFL-aligned club to further his football and has impressed with his determination and professionalism.

No. 57 Mutaz El Nour
14/8/2001, 192cm, 83kg

A talented hybrid defender from the Northern Bullants, El Nour has moved to an AFL-aligned VFL club to take his game to the next level. Still young but with 2-3 solid years of VFL experience, Mutaz will provide some excitement in 2023 with his dare, athleticism and foot skills.

No. 58 Cam Olden
19/4/2000, 179cm, 78kg

Olden enjoyed a career-best season in 2022, playing 11 games and looking comfortable at the level. He is now in his third year of VFL football and continues to provide value as a tough, contest-winning small forward.

No. 59 Lachlan Johnson
07/8/2001, 175cm, 78kg

His year started promisingly with an early season debut, looking right at home with his game sense, agility and decision making. Unfortunately, he struggled for consistency due to injury and will be looking for some good fortune with his body this season so he can get back to his damaging best in 2023.

No. 60 Jess McGrath
25/1/2002, 185cm, 75kg

Impressed many in the program with his application, dedication and competitiveness at VFL level last season. The athletic defender, now is in his third season in the program, will looking to elevate his game even further in 2023.

No. 61 Tom Brindley
08/12/1998, 195cm, 83kg

Tom’s first year at VFL level was really promising. He had two turns at a debut, the first one being ruined illness, and continues to impress heading into 2023 with his incredible athleticism and positional versatility.

No. 62 Nick Guiney
18/1/2002, 187cm, 93kg

Guiney had a super impressive debut year, playing in a variety of positions before settling down back as a competitive and athletic defender. It is an exciting prospect knowing he still just 20 years of age and entering his second year of VFL football.

No. 63 Beau Tedcastle
29/3/2004, 177cm, 74kg

Dangerous forward and GWV Rebels graduate from the Northern Territory that boarded at Ballarat's St Patrick's College last year. After playing some early-season NTFL football for St Mary’s late in 2022, Beau has joined the Richmond VFL program for 2023 and will excite with his power, speed and crafty goal sense.

No. 64 Misilifi Faimalo
4/5/1999, 181cm, 82kg

Faimalo's searing speed and agility was on full display in his debut year. With a year of state league experience now under his belt, along with another preseason, we expect him to generate more excitement as he continues to develop his game.

No. 65 Joel Nathan
12/10/2000, 191cm, 85kg

A favourite clubman, Joel returns for his fourth year in the program. The athletic and ever-reliable Tiger is a brutal competitor and can play on forwards of all sizes.

No. 66 Luke Teal

Teal is an athletic medium defender that represented Oakleigh Chargers and Vic Metro last year in what was quite an injury-interrupted year for him. No. 67 Fraser Elliot
5/7/2002, 188cm, 89kg

Elliot's second year at VFL level last season started on shaky ground with injuries and illness. When he was finally given an opportunity at the level in the second half of the season, he had an immediate impact as a big-bodied, contest-winning midfielder with clean hands. We expect him to continue this exciting form into 2023.

No. 68 James Trezise
15/6/2002, 188cm, 76kg

A smooth moving dangerous forward from Tooradin-Dalmore with zippy lateral movement and athleticism. He has never been in the elite pathway before which is exciting considering the raw talent he possesses.

Watched this game and noted the following:

Dow was BOG for mine racking up possessions through the middle. His disposal was quite good also. He is developing very nicely as an inside player. Becoming a ready made replacement.

Sonie was excellent also racking up possessions. His run from contest to contest was eye catching. I would expect him to play in the AFL side next week or the week after. Got tired in the second half.

Clarke was good without being outstanding in my view. His link play was important and his goal assist work was excellent as always. He has improvements coming.

Banks finally show signs of an AFL player that I hadn't seen before. He was very good on the wing and across half back to help. Positive signs.

Green will be a great Richmond player. Those who compared him to Baker are spot on. He is a Baker clone 100%. Has very good evasive skills.

Ryan was a class above the VFL today but only played 2 quarters and I missed the first 10 minutes of the first quarter. Definitely ready for the AFL now and at some stage Jack will have to be rested to give Samson games. This must happen in my view. He is the future and must play at least 10 games this year.

Bradtke was underwhelming in my view during this game. Having said that it is early days and he has plenty of time on his side. I was just a little disappointed that he didn't complete hard enough at times. No doubt he is adapting to VFL/AFL standard. He will get better.

Nyuon was ok without being a stand out. Played ok but nothing that stood out or AFL quality.

Young injured his ankle later in the game but his output was similar to Nyuon. Nothing special on the day.

Ralphsmith was my disappointment on the day but probably because I expect more from him. He had an okish standard game. As a player pushing for an AFL spot he needs to show more. We still need to see him dominate a VFL game like up and coming players do. Dow showed those signs today.

Overall the signs were very positive remembering that it was only a practice match. We certainly have good talent in the wings....
