Reports suggest the Port Adelaide premiership coach, who still has a year left to run on his contract with the Giants, will join the Tigers and reconnect with Damien Hardwick next year.
That would mean Williams would forgo the final year of his contract as Kevin Sheedy’s right hand man at the Giants.
Williams was seen as the obvious successor for Sheedy once the former Essendon coach retires, which was tipped to be at the end of 2012.
However, the Giants last week renewed Sheedy's contract for another year.
In a major coup for the Tigers, Williams would take up a mentoring and teaching role with the club's young players.
Williams has also put his hand up for the Carlton top job following Brett Ratten's sacking last week, although Mick Malthouse is seen as odds-on favourite to assume that position.
Hardwick played under Williams in the Power's premiership win in 2004 and also started his coaching apprenticeship under the watchful eye of Williams.
