Tigers in Giant hunt for Williams

RICHMOND is seeking to entice former Port Adelaide premiership coach Mark Williams from Greater Western Sydney to join its coaching team with an announcement on his move to Punt Road expected soon.

Williams is understood to be in demand for a role primarily in development at the Tigers, where he would be reunited with Damien Hardwick who was a member of the Port premiership side coached by Williams and started his coaching apprenticeship under Williams.

A senior assistant coach at Greater Western Sydney under Kevin Sheedy, Williams remains contracted to the Giants for next year but it is understood that relationship has deteriorated. Williams' future became cloudier this week when Sheedy's contract as senior coach of the club was renewed.

It is believed the Tigers are not considering Williams for a mentoring role of Hardwick, such as was discussed and rejected last year when Mick Malthouse was a potential candidate for such a role. It is also unknown if Williams would be used in a match-day role as discussions are only beginning.

Williams is believed to have been unhappy in Western Sydney and has already begun discussions about moving his family back to Melbourne.

When Williams initially moved to the start-up club there was an expectation that he would start under Sheedy and indeed most likely act as de facto coach to Sheedy's spruiker.

GWS plays its final game of the season today and it is likely to be Williams' last game at the club with negotiations with the Tigers expected to intensify this week. It is presumed GWS will be willing to release Williams from his contract.

Williams has not been a target for Carlton in its ''search'' for a new coach after this week's sacking of Brett Ratten.

Williams is a big personality and can evidently be a difficult figure to manage, but no one in the game doubts his football nous and Hardwick knows and understand his character and is comfortable with the fact he can only add to the Tigers and in particular help with educating their young players.

Wow  :bow

Great stuff RFC.

Not sure what I think of Williams personality wise, but his record speaks for itself. Can coach.

How he got that Port side into the GF a few years ago is beyond me.

Would be fantastic to get in a development role. Has been coaching the GWS as it is.

Uuuummmm, why Choco ?

Realistically what can Willaims bring to the table that someone such as a Richardson couldn't in a development role ?

A destablising influence & divisive figure perhaps ?

Too many ex-Port peolple already at RFC - Hardwick, Lade, Hartley & perhaps Chaplan.

RFC certainly needed a culture change - but to Port - no thanks !

Would prefer a blend of Hawks & Geelongs game plan & culture from the last 5 years.

And my thoughts than your thoughts."

I hope we're offering him a bit more than a development coaches role, this guy would be a great senior assistant and probably knows more about the game than our whole coaching team combined.
