September 01, 2012 8:27PMGreater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy paid tribute to outgoing senior assistant coach Mark Williams on Saturday night, saying he hopes the former AFL premiership mentor joins Richmond.
Williams had long been tipped to assume the reins from Sheedy after 2013, but asked for a release from the final year of his contract to move to Melbourne for family reasons.
It was granted and Williams, who guided Port Adelaide to their sole AFL premiership in 2004, is reportedly set to reunite with former pupil Damien Hardwick at Richmond.
Sheedy, who praised the contribution of Williams after the side's maiden season ended with a 28-point loss to North Melbourne, hoped his former understudy would join the Tigers.
"If he did go to Richmond, I think he's an acquisition to the club. He'll help Richmond get into the eight and I'd like to see that, being an old Tiger," Sheedy said.
"He's one of the best teacher coaches I've ever worked with - there's no doubt about that."
It had been speculated that Williams's relationship with the Giants had soured recently, especially after they appointed Sheedy as coach for next season, but GWS chief executive David Matthews didn't believe that was the case.
"I don't see that," Matthews said.
"I think if you saw the reaction from the players tonight when he announced this was his last game, you see the players had formed a close relationship with him - as they have with Kevin Sheedy and all the coaches. There's not one coach at this club, there's many.
"And I don't see any particular evidence of that (Williams's discontent). Whether people get frustrated in their careers is something that happens in football, but he's been brilliant for this club.
"He's an outstanding teacher."
Sheedy conceded his reappointment for 2013 might have had a bearing on Williams's exit.
"That decision has probably frustrated him."
