Is this unheralded defender Richmond's 'Glenn Archer'?By SEN
11 September 2017Herald Sun Chief Football Writer Mark Robinson has nominated an unheralded Tiger as having the same influence on his club as Glenn Archer.
The North Melbourne champion was celebrated for his courageous, relentless style of play, representing somewhat of a spiritual leader for the Roos. After Richmond secured their first finals victory since 2001, Robinson believes Nick Vlastuin embodies the mentality that Archer brought to the field.
“He [Vlastuin] is quickly becoming the Glenn Archer of Richmond,” he told SEN Afternoons.
“People will sit there and say, what a stupid thing to say. Archer was this, this and this, but what Nick Vlastuin does, his bravery is a stand out.”
Vlastuin amassed 19 disposals at 79 percent efficiency, 457 metres gained and 10 marks playing off the half back line in the 51-point win over Geelong in Friday night’s Qualifying Final.
“What the numbers don’t describe is Vlastuin’s bravery and willingness to compete,” Robinson wrote in Monday’s Herald Sun.
“He’s the kind of player who inspires teammates with his blue-collar work ethic, rather than out-and-out individual brilliance. Can’t think of a defender who runs back with the flight as much as Vlastuin does.”
